Miller, Henry
An enduring symbol of the triumph of free speech over censorship, Henry Miller is best known for his groundbreaking and controversial novel, The Tropic of Cancer (1934). Famously linked to Anais Nin, as well as a string of wives including the mysterious June, Miller¢s books were the some of the first to explicitly detail sexual relationships and encounters, causing his books to be banned in his native United States until the mid-sixties. Born December 26, 1891 in New York City, Miller spent his early years meandering through the city, working odd jobs and briefly attending the City College of New York. In the late twenties, Miller, along with his then-wife June, joined a burgeoning community of American writers in Paris. A tangled web of relationships ensued over the next few years as Miller, June, Nin, and the Miller¢s friend Jean Kronski, formed interchangeable sexual and emotional partnerships. These relationships were the inspiration for Miller¢s early work. Now an expatriate, Miller was virtually dependent on benefactors such as Nin for financial support. Despite a small income from his job as a proofreader for the Chicago Tribune (Paris Edition), it was Nin who provided the capital for the first printing of The Tropic of Cancer . While in Paris, Miller also wrote

He was known for breaking with existing literary forms and developing a new sort of 'novel' that is a mixture of novel, autobiography, social criticism, philosophical reflection, surrealist free association, and mysticism , one that is distinctly always about and expressive of the real-life Henry Miller and yet is also fictional. His most characteristic works of this kind are Tropic of Cancer Tropic of Capricorn and Black Spring . He also wrote travel memoirs and essays of literary criticism and analysis.

    Biography
American writer whose books were banned as obscene in the U.S. for many years. His works were drawn, for the most part, from personal experience and observation with stories of the women he loved and the friends he cherished. A late bloomer, Miller, who was raised in Brooklyn, was first published at age 42 while living in Paris. His "Tropic of Cancer" was followed by "Tropic of Capricorn," 1939, and the trilogy "Rosy Crucifixion" in 1949, 1953 and 1959. Miller's most important books had been published originally in France, and were banned in the United States until 1961. Highly eccentric, Miller also had a second career as a watercolor painter, and for years, made more money from that than he did from his writing. Miller was born to lower-middle class parents in the Yorkville section of New York City. In 1892, the Millers moved across the East River to Williamsburg and Henry was raised in that part of Brooklyn. In 1909, he entered the City College of New York, and left after two months. He took a job with the Atlas Portland Cement company in Manhattan. Two years later, his father, a merchant tailor, financed him to go to Cornell University. Miller took the money and disappeared with his mistress, a lover who was old enough to be his mother. He returned home a year later, then left for good to go West. He worked in the Southwest, mostly as a ranch hand, and became interested in movements such as the Industrial Workers of the World.

    Henry Miller Remembered
Elmer Gertz and Henry Miller (For many years, the late Henry Miller was considered the "Bad Boy" of American literature. His novel, The Tropic of Cancer , first published in France, dealt with the ribald exploits of expatriate writers in Paris during the 1930s. For over twenty years, the book was banned in the USA. Elmer Gertz successfully defended the book's publication in Illinois. After the ban was lifted, Gertz and Miller became friendsa friendship the lawyer recalls in this exclusive interview with American Legends.)
AL: Why was Miller considered a "dirty" writer? EG: Because he wrote Tropic of Cancer and several other books which used the so-called "four letter" words and were very explicit sexually. AL: Some critics, like Gore Vidal, have claimed that Miller was self-indulgent.
EG: Henry Miller wrote exactly as he lived and felt. He tried to avoid all literary devices such as verbal inhibitions. AL: Miller has been criticized by some feminists.

    Henry Miller

    20. EL ARTE DE HENRY MILLER
Entrevista al escritor y breve semblanza.
    http://www.lexia.com.ar/millercast.htm
