The Mianus Gorge Rock Shelter
I believe this same condition can be detected at the Mianus Gorge Rock Shelter. Thus, if my suppositions that points, m, n, o, p, q, and r (third row, Figure 6) are Lamokoid and the remainder are broadly Laurentian (save the lozenge or pentagonal form, s, and the triangular forms t, u, and v, which have parallels in later manifestations) are valid, then Mianus Gorge Rock Shelter yields a complex of projectile points quite in keeping with Ritchie's demonstrations in the Hudson Valley. Ritchie's Bannerman Site, incidentally, lies only some 30 miles northwest of my site. Statistically, too, the distribution seems in keeping with this view of prehistory for our region. That is, of the six points I see as Lamokoid, four, or about 67 percent, came from the low levels at this site (Levels 2 and 3). Two of these six points, or about 34 percent, came from Level 1, but were still associated physically with the broader-bladed Laurentian-like forms. Ritchie says specifically that the dominant Laurentian Culture of the Hudson Valley maintained itself in all essentials as time went by, but with the addition of the obviously older point form. Thus are the Lamokoid forms to be accounted for in higher, more Laurentian-like horizons. It remains to mention that the broad-bladed Laurentian forms may well be likened to, or include some of Witthoft's (1953) broad forms, too. Thus, there may be Susquehanna Broad forms present here. "The Closely Reasoned Technological Story'': The Critical History of Hard Science Fiction
As a way to begin a discussion of hard SF, it is surely useful to examine when and how the term emerged. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, there were several tentative efforts to establish a label for such a category. In 1955, C.S. Lewis called Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea , H.G. Wells's "The Land Ironclads,'' and Arthur C. Clarke's Prelude to Space "Engineers' Stories'' (#24 63). Gregory Benford recalled a conversation with Poul Anderson in the early 1960s when they employed the phrase "Campbellian science fiction'' (personal communication), while Harlan Ellison used the similar "Campbellesque science fiction,'' as well as "the Campbell heavy-science story'' and "the Campbell dull-science novel,'' to condemn Frank Herbert's The Dragon in the Sea in 1968 (#14 122, 123, 125). In the blurb to Clarke's "The Wind from the Sun'' [then called "Sunjammer''], Donald A. Wollheim and Terry Carr observed, "Just as the mystery field has a sub-genre called 'police procedural fiction'...a type of story so integrally concerned with how the future will work...might be called 'procedural science fiction'—and Arthur C. Clarke, with tales like PRELUDE TO SPACE and A FALL OF MOONDUST, has shown that he is the master of the form'' (#34 9).

P. Schuyler Miller
"If, for whatever reason, a breeding population does get to another
planet of another star, I feel sure they'll be coming back eventually.
May be no one here, of course..."
Miller grew up in the Mohawk Valley in New York state where he acquired an interest in the Mohawk and Iroquois Indians. He attended Union College in Schnectady, receiving an M.S. in chemistry. Miller worked for General Electric in the 1940's as a technical writer and joined the New York State Archaeological Association and pursued his native american interests as an amateur archaeologist. Another hobby was Science Fiction. Miller wrote during the formulative pulp period of the 1930s, where he helped control direction with stories like"Spawn," "Crysalis," and "The Titan." In 1952, Miller removed to Pittsburgh where he worked for Fisher Scientific Company until his death. During this change of life style, Schuy also began book reviewing for Astounding , and later, Analog . This marked a shift in SF away from writing fictional stories into journalistic works. Miller was on an Indian archeaological tour when he died of a heart attack at the 'Fort Ancient Civilization' remains west of Parkersburg, W. Va. After his death, Mary E. Drake, his sister, donated his collection of maps, books, documents, periodicals and personal notes to the Carnegie Museum. The P. Schuyler Miller Memorial Library is now housed at the Edward O'Neill Research Center, 5800 Baum Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA. 15206-3706
