68. Tenure Of Kings And Magistrates
Provides insights on the volatile sociopolitical time period during which Milton wrote Tenure of Kings and Magistrates.

Home Curriculum Vitae Milton Pages Writing ... Links The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates Take a Chronological Tour of Milton's Prose! Press Play for Musical Accompaniment Background The victorious parliamentary coalition had largely been held together by the urgency of war. Once peace came, the urgency faded, and the coalition began to disintegrate. Achieving any kind of agreement on the shape political settlement should take proved impossible. A majority in the Parliament, especially the Presbyterians, wanted to negotiate with Charles and to reinstate him on terms that seemed to some outside Parliament to sacrifice the aims for which the war had been fought. The Army, far more radical than the Parliament in its politics, wanted instead to bring the King to justice and on 11/20/1648 expressed its opposition to a treaty in a lengthy document, entitled . To finally break this stalemate, the Army staged a coup on Dec. 6, 1648. This coup, called Pride's Purge, excluded the more uncooperative members of Parliament, thereby leaving a body (the "Rump" Parliament) that was more responsive to the wishes of the Army. This opened the way for the events to come. When it became clear that Charles would be placed on trial, bitter responses were provoked from Royalists and Presbyterians alike. Even radical groups such as the Levelers opposed the trial of Charles.

SONNET XI.
ON THE DETRACTION WHICH FOLLOWED UPON
THE WRITING OF CERTAIN TREATISES.
A BOOK was writ of late called Tetrachordon,
Cries the stall-reader, Bless us! what a word on
Colkitto , or Macdonnel , or Galasp
* When Milton published his book of Divorce, he was greatly condemned by the Presbyterian ministers, whose advocate and champion he had been before. He published his Tetrachordon, or Expositions upon the four chief places in Scripture, which treat of marriage, or nullities in marriage, in 1645.
Galasp, was one of the Scotch commissioners to the Westminster assembly. But who the other persons were is not known. It appears from this sonnet, and the verses on the forcers of conscience, that Milton treats the Presbyterians with great contempt.

John Milton
Areopagitica,1643
Speech For The Liberty Of Unlicensed Printing To The Parliament Of England This is true Liberty when free born men Having to advise the public may speak free, Which he who can, and will, deserv's high praise, Who neither can nor will, may hold his peace; What can be juster in a State than this? Euripid. Hicetid. Introductory Note The name of Milton's speech on the freedom of the press was imitated from that of the "Logos Areopagiticos" of the Athenian orator Isocrates (B.C.436-338), which was also a speech meant to be read, not heard. The oration of Isocrates aimed at re-establishing the old democracy of Athens by restoring the Court of the Areopagus, whence the work derived its title. But the importance of Milton's pamphlet is not to be measured by its effect on the political situation which was its immediate occasion. In his enthusiasm for liberty, the master passion of his life, he rose far above the politics of the hour; and the "Areopagitica" holds its supremacy among his prose writings by virtue of its appeal to fundamental principles, and its triumphant assertion of the faith that all that truth needs to assure its victory over error is a fair field and no favor.
Order Of The Long Parliament For The Regulating Of Printing, 14 June, 1643
