About Gabriela Mistral
Gabriela Mistral was the first female Latin American poet to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. She received it in 1945 for: "for her lyric poetry which, inspired by powerful emotions,
has made her name a symbol of the idealistic aspirations of the entire Latin American world"
Unfortunately he killed himself in 1909 and this left a profound impact upon her life. Even more tragically, Gabriela was also later to see her nephew (whom she looked upon as a son) commit suicide at the age of 17.However despite personal setbacks Gabriela was able to pursue a very successful career in education. This was partly because she became a successful writer. She had many works published, dealing with many issues related to education and poetry.
Many of the poems in Ternura deal with themes from childhood. However her poems also express much deeper ideas as well. Mistral wrote frequently of images such as love (especially motherly love). Mistral’s poems were influenced by her Christian faith - she was a lay member of the Franciscan order. A recurrent theme in some of her poetry is the concept of “rebirth” after death - a liberation from the world. In the 1930s Francisco Donoso, a Chilean author and priest, wrote that "almost all of Gabriela Mistral's poems have the accent of a prayer".

Mistral, Gabriela,
pseudonym Of Spanish, Basque, and Indian descent, she grew up in a village of northern Chile and became a schoolteacher at 15, advancing later to the rank of college professor. Throughout her life she combined writing with a career as an educator, cultural minister, and diplomat; her diplomatic assignments included posts in Madrid, Lisbon, Genoa, and Nice. (1922; "Desolation"), includes the poem "Dolor," detailing the aftermath of a love affair that was ended by the suicide of her lover. Because of this tragedy she never married, and a haunting, wistful strain of thwarted maternal tenderness informs her work. Ternura (1924, enlarged 1945; "Tenderness") and Tala (1938; "Destruction") evidence a broader interest in mankind, but love of children and of the downtrodden remained her principal themes. She also published a book of poems, Lagar (1954; "The Wine Press"). Mistral travelled widely in her capacity as cultural ambassador and served on sociological and cultural committees of the League of Nations and the United Nations. Her emotionally powerful verse, frequently coloured by figures and words peculiarly her own, has been widely translated. A selection translated into English by Langston Hughes was published in 1957 and another selection by Doris Dana in 1971. Related Propaedia Topics: Twentieth-century literature Poetry

And shall it never be again, never? Not on nights filled with trembling of stars, or by the pure light of virginal dawns, or on afternoons of immolation?
Never, at the edge of any pale pathway that borders the field, or beside any tremulous fountain white under the moon?
Never, beneath the entangled tresses of the forest where, calling out to him, night descended on me? Nor in the cavern that returns my echoing outcry?
Oh, no! Just to see him again, no matter where in little patches of sky or in the seething vortex, beneath placid moons or in a livid horror!
And, together with him, to be all springtimes and all winters, entwined in one anguished knot around his blood-stained neck!
