From Publishers Weekly
The setting of Mistry's quietly magnificent second novel (after the acclaimed Such a Long Journey) is India in 1975-76, when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, defying a court order calling for her resignation, declares a state of emergency and imprisons the parliamentary opposition as well as thousands of students, teachers, trade unionists and journalists. These events, along with the government's forced sterilization campaign, serve as backdrop for an intricate tale of four ordinary people struggling to survive. Naive college student Maneck Kohlah, whose parents' general store is failing, rents a room in the house of Dina Dalal, a 40-ish widowed seamstress. Dina acquires two additional boarders: hapless but enterprising itinerant tailor Ishvar Darji and his nephew Omprakash, whose father, a village untouchable, was... Rohinton Mistry

Book Description The award-winning novelist Rohinton Mistry is recognized as one of the most important contemporary writers of postcolonial literature. This studythe first of its kindwill provide scholars and students with an insight into the key features of Mistry's work. Peter Morey suggests how the author's writing can be read in terms of recent Indian political history, his native Zoroastrian culture and ethos, conventions of oral storytelling common to Persia and South Asia, and the experience of migration. The texts are viewed through the lens of diaspora and minority discourse theories to show how Mistry's writing is illustrative of marginal positions in relation to sanctioned national identities.

Rohinton Mistry was born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, on July 3, 1952. A member of the Parsi religious community in India, he completed an undergraduate degree in mathematics and economics at the University of Bombay. In 1975 he moved to Canada, where he lived in Toronto and worked for a bank. Mistry eventually returned to university, finishing a degree in English and philosophy in 1984 at the University of Toronto. It was while he was a university student in Canada that he began to write and publish fiction. His first two published short stories won the Hart House Literary Prize (1983 and 1984), and another story won the Canadian Fiction Magazine Tales from Firoszha Baag (1987). This collection of linked short stories concerns the inhabitants of an apartment compound in Bombay. One of the stories, "Squatter," consists of tall tales told by the compound’s local storyteller; one tale concerns Savukshaw, a heroic cricket player and tiger hunter, and the other concerns Sarosh, a Parsi who immigrates to Canada but returns to India when he cannot learn how to use a Western toilet. In another story, "Swimming Lessons," a young man connects the residents of his Canadian apartment to the family and residents in the Bombay apartment he has left behind. A Fine Balance
(Mistry; Rohinton) Political and social upheaval brings four Indian people from differing backgrounds together in this disturbing story. Corruption, oppression, and poverty are widespread in India during the 1960?s and 70?s. The caste system is failing and internal and external war has devastated many areas during this time of British withdrawal. Dina?s father was a doctor who died fostering his humanitarian ideals. After her mother dies from bereavement she is left to be raised by a cruel, uncompromising brother. He denies his sister the education and better life she was destined to have. Her brother symbolizes a rigid authoritative society. Determined to live independently Dina sews for hire after her husband is killed in a bicycle accident. After her eyesight begins to fail, she hires two tailors who are from a small backward village. Dina also takes in a student boarder, the son of a former school mate. The young student, Maneck who rents a room from the widow, comes from a formerly wealthy family who believes they can secure a better future for their son by sending him away to school. Instead of being grateful for this chance Maneck feels rejected and betrayed. He is never able to love or connect with his parents the same way again. Much of his time is spent in solitude feeling separated from those around him. Becoming part of the small group working and living at Dina?s apartment gives Maneck new purpose and hope.
