Mitchell, W.O.,
in full WILLIAM ORMOND MITCHELL (b. March 13, 1914, Weyburn, Sask., Can.), writer of stories that deal humorously with the hardships of western Canadian prairie life. Mitchell received favourable notice for his first novel, Who Has Seen the Wind? (1947), a sensitive picture of a grim prairie town seen from the point of view of a small boy. Mitchell's Jake and the Kid (1961) was later developed into a popular, long-running radio and television series. His novel The Kite (1962) is about a newsman's interview with "Daddy Sherry," supposedly the oldest and wisest man in western Canada. Another novel, The Vanishing Point (1973), deals with a teacher's involvement with Indians in southwest Alberta. Related Propaedia Topics: Twentieth-century literature The novel

Nature , 220 (10 July 1965); doi:10.1038/207220a0 Serotypes of Candida albicans F. C. STALLYBRASS Department of Bacteriology, St. Thomas's Hospital Medical School, London.
THE classification of Candida albicans into two serological groups on the basis of agglutination tests was first reported by Hasenclever and Mitchell , and both in the original and subsequent papers these authors and their colleagues referred to group A and group B strains. The findings were confirmed by me using a double-diffusion method, and, for the sake of conformity, similarly using the word 'group' with reference to the serological division within the species. Nevertheless, it must be apparent that this terminology is not consistent with that relating to the serological classification of other microbiological species such as Pneumococcus and Haemophilus influenzae , where the word 'type' is employed, and that confusion may arise if the word 'group' is used to describe not only an antigen (group antigen) which is common to more than one species of a particular genus, but also the serological division within a species.

Keller, The Charmers
Brodny, Two's a Crowd
Brodny, The See-Through Man by Pete Stampede Warren Mitchell will forever be linked with his character, or maybe that should be alter-ego, of bigoted, small-minded, loud-mouthed Alf Garnett, the comedically monstrous Cockney who dominated the ground-breaking series Till Death Us Do Part (BBC, 1965-75), later to be equally successfully (and controversially) transmogrified into All In The Family's Archie Bunker. Quite an achievement for the "sophisticated, left-wing Jewish actor," as playwright Peter Nichols once described him. Given Alf's suspicions of anything pertaining to the Left politically, Mitchell's repeated casting as a Soviet apparatchik (albeit one as daft as Brodny/Keller) in The Avengers is all the more ironic. He was born in London in 1926; his Russian-Jewish grandparents had fled to Britain in 1910. His real name is Warren Misell; he says he regrets anglicising it now, as if you remind people what your name is often enough, they'll remember eventually. During WW2, while serving in the Royal Air Force, he managed to get onto a six-month course at Exeter College, Oxford, alongside another would-be actor called Richard Burton; later biographies of Burton tended to overlook the fact that the university only made these short courses possible because most of the students were in the services, but it was still quite an achievement for the Jewish North Londoner, and Welsh coal-miner's son, respectively. After the war, Mitchell studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where

Atlanta, Georgia *Margaret Mitchell photograph courtesy of The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library. BIOGRAPHY The amazing popularity of her novel Gone with the Wind , its heroine Scarlett O'Hara, and the film they inspired made ex- Atlanta Journal reporter Margaret Mitchell a twentieth-century cultural phenomenon. When it was published in 1936, Mitchell's romance of the Old South sold more copies than any other American novel in history. Meanwhile Atlanta-born "Peggy" Mitchell won both of the United States's two highest honors for fiction - the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Perpetually in print, GWTW has been published in more than forty different countries, and debate and study of Mitchell's literary achievement has been practically as persistent and widespread as the book's popularity. Two standard scholarly indexes on the Georgia Library Learning Online network (GALILEO) show that Mitchell's work has attracted at least 69 separate critical articles and monographs since 1963 ( MLA Bibliography ) and at least 25 dissertations since 1980 ( Dissertation Abstracts ). In 1999, an Associated Press panel voted Margaret Mitchell one of the most influential Georgians of the 20th century, second only to Martin Luther King, Jr.
