(from Le Misanthrope During his early years in Paris, among Molière's close friends were La Fontaine, Claude Chapelle, and Racine. Molière achieved fame with the prose comedy LES PRÉCIEUSES RIDICULES, first performed November 18, 1659 at the Théâtre du Petit-Bourbon. The author himself played successfully the Marquis de Mascarille, actually a disguised servant, and nearly adopted "Mascarille" as a new stage name. He soon had his own theatre, which was competing with Racine The Shool for Wives from 1662 is generally regarded as the first of Molière's masterpieces. It poked fun at the limited education that was given to daughters of rich families, and reflected the Molière's own marriage. The play was first produced in its present form, February 5, 1669, in Paris. I an effort to save her step-daughter's romance, Elmire, Orgon's wife, meets Tartuffe to beg him to refuse such a marriage. Tartuffe, believing they are alone, proposes a clandestine love affair to the wife of his benefactor. Orgon's son, Damis, steps forth from a closet where he has been hiding during the interview, just as Orgon enters the room. Damis denounces Tartuffe for the scoundrel he is. Orgon, however, refuses to believe either his son, Damis, or his wife, Elmire. Instead he disinherits his son and drives him from the house. Not satisfied with these amends to Tartuffe's wounded "innocence," he forthwith makes Tartuffe a deed of gift for the house itself. He declares, moreover, that the marriage with Marianne shall take place at once. Biographies/Studies Bookstore Biographies/Studies Related Sites

Le Misanthrope is not without defects, but it occupies a place by the side of Don Juan and Tartuffe in right of its beauty and style, its felicitous delineations, and its refined pungency as a satire against more than one fashionable false pretence. Its purely literary merit was so high that Boileau hailed it as his friend's masterpiece.

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin
Portrait of Molière by Nicolas Mignard Born January 15, 1622
Paris, France Jean-Baptiste Poquelin , mostly known by his stage name Molière , (January 15, 1622 – February 17, 1673) was a French playwright and actor who is considered one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature. Among Molière's best-known dramas are Le Misanthrope The Misanthrope L'École des femmes The School for Wives Tartuffe ou L'Imposteur Tartuffe or the Hypocrite L'Avare ou L'École du mensonge The Miser Le Malade imaginaire The Imaginary Invalid ), and Le Bourgeois gentilhomme The Bourgeois Gentleman From a prosperous family and having studied at the Collège de Clermont (now Lycée Louis-le-Grand ), Molière was well suited to begin a life in the theatre. Thirteen years as an itinerant actor helped him polish his comic abilities while he began writing, combining Commedia dell'Arte elements with the more refined French comedy. Through the patronage of a few aristocrats, including Philippe I, Duke of Orléans , the brother of Louis XIV , Molière procured a command performance before the King at the Louvre . Performing a classic play by Pierre Corneille and a farce of his own

The Misanthrope
by Moliere, 1622 Main characters Alceste - He is in love with Celimene and very cynical about people and the way they act. Celimene - She is conceited and shallow being everything that Alceste dislikes in a person. Philinte - He is a good friend of Alceste but just the opposite in character since he is less frank and more sincere towards others. Arsinoe - She serves as a foil to Celimene being just as clever but less shallow. Minor Characters Eliante - She is Celimene’s good and reasonable cousin. Oronte - He is in love with Celimene and a writer of poetry. Clitandre - He is another suitor trying to gain the hand of Celimene. Setting Celimene’s apartment - There is very little action and very much dialogue in this play which takes place in this apartment. Plot Symbols Alceste - He symbolizes the cynicism and hypocrisy of the manners of the time. Philinte - He symbolizes the sometimes false goodness and friendship of people.

Home Theatre Links Advertise Here Email Us The Misanthrope A synopsis of the play by This article was originally published in Minute History of the Drama ALCESTE is one of those candid souls who believe that the truth should be spoken in season and out. He will make no concessions to ordinary courtesy and denounces the insincerity of contemporary society upon every possible occasion. His friend, Philinte, tries to make him see that honesty does not require him to go out of his way to offend and hurt people. He even points out that a few well-spoken words in the right place might go far toward bringing a favorable decision in the lawsuit Alceste has pending in the courts. To this Alceste has but one answer. If his suit cannot win through its own merits, he will renounce a society which sanctions such injustice and leave Paris to live the life of a hermit. When the young courtier, Oronte, begs his opinion on some verses of which Oronte is the author, Alceste's rude and needless criticism adds another to the not inconsiderable list of his enemies and brings upon him the threat of a second lawsuit.

" T IS a mighty stroke at any vice to make it the laughing stock of everybody; for men will easily suffer reproof; but they can by no means endure mockery. They will consent to be wicked but not ridiculous." [ These are the words of the man who is rated by most critics as the greatest comic dramatist of all times and considered worthy to stand with Sophocles and Shakespeare . They were written in defense of the play, Tartuffe , ranked as his most outstanding and most representative play. For in the 17th century, as in ours, powerful cliques attempted to censor every play that did not happen to coincide with their own views or selfish interests. We can realize the bitterness of the campaign against Tartuffe from the fact that it was not finally licensed for public performance until more than three years after its first performance before Louis XIV. "Molière" was in reality only the stage name assumed when, as a young man, the embryo genius joined a group of strolling players. So famous did he make it, that few of us today recognize the surname "Poquelin." Molière's father was a prosperous tradesman, upholsterer to the King by appointment. Since this was a hereditary honor, the son shrewdly made use of it to establish and strengthen himself in the King's favor, when, after twelve years in the provinces, he returned to Paris.

Aethiopica , a story hardly suited to one of his age, angrily threw the book into the fire; whereupon the youth immediately procured another copy, read it to the last line, and then, carrying it to the sacristan, sullenly remarked, "You may burn this as well." But impatience of restraint was not accompanied by a disinclination to study; on the contrary, his progress was rapid enough to awaken sanguine hopes as to his future. In the matter of Greek scholarship, it would seem, he learned more than Lancelot could teach him, burying himself in the woods to pore over Euripides and Sophocles
EARLY POEMS
It soon became evident that he had no sympathy for his self-elected calling. Established for a time in Paris as an assistant to his guardian, he gave himself up to doubtful pleasures, fell into bad company, and in some of his letters went so far as to ridicule the pious forms of expression adopted by the Port Royalists. Moreover, new ideas and aspirations took possession of his mind. In honor of the royal marriage he wrote an ode entitled La Nymph de la Seine , unquestionably possessed of merit though disfigured by many faults. Chapelain was then arbiter of the royal bounties to men of letters, and Vitart sent him the manuscript. "Many of the stanzas," he wrote in reply, "could not be improved. If a few passages I have marked are set rightespecially one in which Tritons are placed in a riverthe ode will be a fine one." Racine, of course, made all the alterations suggested, and on the recommendation of Chapelain he received one hundred louis d'or from Colbert in the name of the king. This unexpected success disposed him to rely upon literature, but soon afterward, probably to avoid reproaches from Port Royal as to his mode of living and pursuits, he became the guest at Uzes of his mother's brother, Antoine Sconin, the vicar-general in that town, who wished to find him a benefice. Here he wrote his notes on the

Jean Baptiste Poquelin (1622-73) Baptized in Paris, January 15, 1622, young Jean Baptiste was the son of a well-to-do merchant upholsterer. In 1633, he bought an office at court, valet de chambre tapissier ordinaire du roi , and obtained the rights of succession for his son in 1637. The same year Jean Baptiste was sent to the Jesuit College de Clermont where he studied science, grammar, Plautus and Terence. At some point he apparently studied law at a university, perhaps at Orleans; he probably studied philosophy for two years beyond Clermont, also perhaps at Orleans. In 1643, at the tender age of 21, he resigned his rights of succession to the office at court, drew out his share of his deceased mother's estate and compounded his own inheritance. Then in September he cast his lot with nine others and formed the Illustre Theatre with and around Madeleine Bejart, his mistress and business manager. They rented a tennis court to perform in but they apparently did not draw much of a crowd for, in October, they had moved to Rouen. When they returned to Paris in 1644, he had taken the name "de Molière," the origin or significance of which is completely unknown. After about a year of what must have been an unsuccessful enterprise, his father had to rescue him from debtors prison.
