Shani Mootoo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Shani Mootoo is an artistic and literary genius who was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1958. She was raised in Trinidad , where she initially began to explore the artistic and literary world. She began writing and creating visual that drew on her ideas regarding sexual relations between members of the same sex. As a victim of sexual abuse, Mootoo found comfort and release in visual art. She was able to use images to express her pent up emotions which she had trouble expressing regarding the abuse she had suffered through as a child. At the age of nineteen Mootoo relocated to Canada where earned a Fine Arts Degree at the University of Western Ontario in 1980. As a multimedia visual artist in Vancouver she created paintings, photographs and videos that dealt with issues of gender, sexuality, identity, self-loathing and sexual abuse. All of which resonated in Mootoo's experiences as an adolescent in Trinidad and a adult in Canada . Exhibitions of Mootoo's multimedia visual artistry have traveled and been acclaimed internationally. Mootoo’s first literary publication, 1993’s

Biography and reviews of Out on Main Street and Cereus Blooms at Night.
http://www.english.emory.edu/Bahri/Motoo.html
Shani Mootoo "Cultural bastards, Janet, cultural bastards. Dat is what we is." Biography S hani Mootoo was born in Ireland in 1958 and raised in Trinidad. She moved to Canada at the age of 19, where she began a career as a visual artist. A skilled multimedia artist and videomaker, she has had exhibitions in the U.S and Canada, and her videos have been shown at a number of film festivals. Mootoo has said that she has gravitated to the visual most of her life, because as a child, when she told her grandmother of the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of an uncle, she was told never to say those words again. So, in different ways, I found it safer not to use words and started making pictures. Finally acknowledging and naming her experience of abuse prompted Mootoo to return to words, and write her first collection of short stories. Her first book, Out on Main Street , published in 1993, is a collection of short stories. Her second book, Cereus Blooms at Night , published in 1996, is her first novel. Major Themes M ootoo's experience as a multiple migrant - an individual whose family has traversed the cultures of India, Ireland, England and Trinidad - and as an immigrant in Canada, emerge as central themes in her work. Cereus Blooms at Night
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Cereus Blooms at Night (1996) is the first novel published by film-maker, artist, and writer Shani Mootoo . The novel recounts the story of an old lady named Mala Ramchandin through the narrative of Tyler, a male nurse at Paradise Alms House. Although the setting of the novel (the town of Paradise in the country Lantanacamara) is deliberately left ambiguous, it is thought to be patterned after the island of Trinidad , where Mootoo lived as a child. Cereus and other flora found throughout the novel, the creolized dialect spoken by the inhabitants of Lantanacamara, and the racial composition of its population ( white people Indians black people ) are all suggestive of Caribbean society. Other possibilities would include Guyana Suriname , and Mauritius , all of which have sizable Indian populations.
edit Plot summary
At the beginning of Part I, Tyler addresses the general audience. His intention for telling the story of Mala is in hopes that the book will eventually reach Asha Ramchandin, Mala’s long-lost younger sister. Mala is an aging, notoriously crazy woman suspected of murder. She was ordered to Paradise Alms House after the judge found her unfit to stand trial. Part I opens with Mala first arriving to Paradise Alms House. She is heavily sedated and kept under physical constraint. All of the nurses are afraid to attend to her because of her infamous reputation. Tyler, being the only male nurse in the nursing home and a subject of gossip and scrutiny for his alternative
