September 27, 2009 Review copy courtesy WordFest The Book of Secrets and The In-Between World of Vikram Lall A Fine Balance The Polished Hoe Born in Ireland and raised in Trinidad, Mootoo has lived in Canada (Vancouver, Edmonton and Toronto) for more than 20 years. Her first novel, Cereus Blooms at Night , made the Giller short list; her second, He Drown She In The Sea That last tension is brought to a head with the arrival back home from Canada of Nayan, son of the local cocoa farming magnate, and his French wife, Anick. Anick brings both North American and European modernism to the stilted culture of upper-class Trinidad; it is not long until her friendship with Viveka brings the hidden issues that all of the Krishnu family want to avoid to the forefront. The result, for this reader, is a highly successful, thoughtful novel. It is neither earth-shattering, nor post-colonial (the politics of Trinidad and race play almost no part). Rather it is an intriguing study of the internal conflict faced by a young woman and the price that conflict extracts from her family. Posted in 2009 Giller Prize Author Mootoo, Shani

Choosing Sides: Gender and Sexuality as Boundaries in Funny Boy and Cereus Blooms at Night
    Deirdre Aaron '04, English 365 , Northwestern University, 2003
Both the narrator in Funny Boy and in Cereus Blooms at Night are non- heteronormative diasporan individuals. While Arjie, Funny Boy' The title of Funny Boy The various stories and language that Tyler uses in Cereus Blooms at Night echo Arjie's experience in the space between male and female. The fact that Tyler describes himself as "neither properly man nor woman but some in-between, unnamed thing" (71) emphasizes the idea that, as a non- heteronormative individual, he exists sexually outside of distinct male-female categories. Tyler's "perversion" (47), just like Arjie's funniness, sets him in an "in-between" space that is neither strictly male nor female. Like Arjie playing "bride-bride," Tyler feels a particular comfort in inhabiting the role of a female. In one particular scene, when he puts on the female nurse's costume that Mala steals for him, he feels as though his body is "metamorphosing" (76) from male into female. As Mala's reaction to Tyler suggests, Tyler more closely resembles his inherent nature dressed as a female than he does as a man. By costuming Tyler as a female, Mootoo signifies Tyler 's in-between nature without specifically titling it . Both authors, as individuals themselves in diaspora , describe sexuality and gender of their diasporan characters not as having a specific name, but rather, as being an in between. Tyler and Arjie's location within male and female stereotypes and modes of behavior fails to be representable as one moment in time or one descriptive word, just as the identity of individuals in diaspora , with ties to several different locations and places, cannot be fully encompassed by any one cultural or ethnic label. Selvadurai and Mootoo's refusal to encompass their character's identities by titling them thwarts a Western desire to categorize sexuality, and parallels the vague nature of diasporan individual's location within the framework of cultural and ethnic belonging. Arjie and Tyler 's sexual and gender location, like the cultural and ethnic location of individuals in diaspora , can only really be described as an "in-between".

Three Reading Questions for Cereus Blooms at Night
Sarah Topol, English 365 , Northwestern University, 2003
[Additional reading and discussion questions 1. Nature plays a big part of Cereus Blooms at Night . The most interesting use of nature appears in Mala's interaction with insects and snails. It appears that her fixation with other living creatures begins when Lavinia tells Mala that killing a snail is "courting bad luck" (54). From then on, it appears that Mala treats all small living things, especially snails, with respect. "We fancied ourselves protector of snails and all things unable to defend themselves from the bullies of the world" (119). How does this humane treatment of weaker beings relate to Mala's parental situation? Why do you think in her old age Mala surrounds herself with "birds, insects, snails and reptiles. She and they and the abundant foliage gossiped among themselves" (127)? Is it simply the result of her fixation on her mother and Lavinia and harboring hopes that her life will one day change? Or is it more than that? Why did she allow them to over run her house and then for them she "facilitated an honorable disposal" (128)?
