Alberto Moravia (1907-1990) - pseudonym of Alberto Pincherle Elsa Morante (1941-1963), who also was a writer, best known for her novel LA STORIA (1974). Several of Moravia's books have been filmed, among them Two Women by Vittorio De Sica (1960), A Ghost at Noon by Jean-Luc Godard (1964), and The Conformist by Bernardo Bertolucci (1970). "Alas, Fausta had told the truth: everything was left exactly as it had been on the day I went away. One seemed to be poking one's nose into the study of one of those long-dead writers whose rooms have been transformed into museums, which are visited by people reverently and hat in hand. Except that there was a difference: those writers whose rooms have been transformed into museums were for the most part real, genuine writers; or were, in their lifetime, sublimated artists of the first water, and their studies are faithful mirrors of their sublimation. I, on the contrary, am desublimated, and my study was clearly a museum of mediocrity, of approximation, of self-didactism, of foolish aspirations, of the near miss, of amateurishness." (from The Two of Us Alberto Pincherle (Alberto Moravia) was born in Rome into a well-to-do middle-class Jewish-Catholic family. His mother was Teresa (de Marcanich) Pincherle, and father, Carlo Pincherle, an architect and a painter. At the age of nine Moravia was stricken with tubercular infection of the leg bones, which he considered the most important factor in his early development. He spent considerable periods from 1916 to 1925 in sanatoriums. During these years Moravia began to write. His first published story, 'Cortigiana stance,' appeared in French in 1927. GLI INDIFFERENTI (1929, Time of Indifference), his first major novel, which was written between 1925 and 1929, Moravia published at his own expense. A poor translation into English, under the title

A Woman
Of Rome
Alberto Moravia
Translated by Lydia Holland
(Steerforth Italia) Alberto Moravia, Bertolt Brecht, and Jean Genet are of a family. They all came out of the violence of WWII. They turn proletariat ethics on its head with their heroes - pimps, whores, hustlers, and murderers. Genet's virtues were thievery, treachery, and sodomy. Brecht's main characters were small-time thieves and grifters. Moravia's city is peopled with pretenders, murderers, corrupt officials, and prostitutes. A Woman of Rome is a re-issue of the 1949 novel of the life of a woman in the streets of Rome. When we first meet Adriana, she is a poor sixteen-year-old, modelling for various artists. One weekend two friends take her, along with the high official, Astarita, to a small fishing village. They eat, and then, with methodical scheming, get Adriana into bed with the police chief. On their journey home, I felt Astarita's hand brush against mine and noticed he was trying to put something into it, a piece of paper, perhaps. I imagined that he had scribbled something to me because he did not dare to address me, but when I glanced down I saw that it was a banknote folded in four. The insult implicit in this is mitigated immediately: The feeling I experienced at that moment bewildered me and, no matter how or when I have received money from men since, I have never again experienced it so clearly and so intensely. It was a feeling of complicity and sensual conspiracy such as none of Aristartia's caresses in the restaurant bedroom had been about to rouse in me. It was a feeling of inevitable subjection that showed me in a flash an aspect of my own nature I had ignored until then. I knew, of course, that I ought to refuse the money, but at the same time I wanted to accept. And not so much from greed, as from the new kind of pleasure that this offering had afforded me.

    Moravia, Alberto

    Biography
Italian writer who was fascinated by the improbable and had a Jekyl and Hyde personality. Italy's best-known author, his work explored complex emotions and sexuality in a graphic, readable style. Throughout his career he wrote 46 books, all of which had a sensual theme and were translated into 37 different languages. He is most famed for his book and movie "Two Women" and was considered ahead of his time in social commentary with a primal force of intellect. In his writing, he also relied heavily on works of prior genius for his inspiration. All of his success began, however, with his first novel, published when he was 19 entitled "The Indifferent Ones." Moravia died on 9/26/1990, Rome, Italy.
