Geburtsakt der Philosophie
Erschrocken schaut der Heide Schaf mich an,
als säh's in mir den ersten Menschenmann.
Sein Blick steckt an; wir stehen wie im Schlaf;
mir ist, ich säh zum ersten Mal ein Schaf.
Birth of Philosophy
The heath sheep glares at me with frightened awe
as though I were the first of men it saw.
Contagious glare! We stand as though asleep;
it seems the first time that I see a sheep.
Gruselett
Der Flügelflagel gaustert
durchs Wiruwaruwolz,
die rote Fingur plaustert
und grausig gutzt der Golz.
Scariboo
The Winglewangle phlutters
through widowadowood, the crimson Fingoor splutters and scary screaks the Scrood.

Author Christian Otto Josef Wolfgang Morgenstern (May 6, 1871 in Munich – March 31, 1914 in Meran ) was a German author and poet from Munich . Morgenstern married Margareta Gosebruch von Liechtenstern on March 7, 1910. He worked for a while as a journalist in Berlin, but spent much of his life traveling through Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, primarily in a vain attempt to recover his health. His travels, though they failed to restore him to health, allowed him to meet many of the foremost literary and philosophical figures of his time in central Europe. Morgenstern's poetry , much of which was inspired by English literary nonsense , is immensely popular, even though he enjoyed very little success during his lifetime. He made fun of scholasticism, e.g. literary criticism in "Drei Hasen", grammar in "Der Werwolf", narrow-mindedness in "Der Gaul", and symbolism in "Der Wasseresel". In "Scholastikerprobleme" he discussed how many angels could sit on a needle . Still many Germans know some of his poems and quotations by heart, e.g. the following line from "The Impossible Fact" ("Die unmögliche Tatsache", 1910):

Christian Morgenstern - Galgenlieder

Biography
German lyric poet who wrote seriouis poetry as well as nonsense literature. He also wrote many lyrics that were ironical and satirical, all the while leading an eccentric life. His serious poetry, influenced by Nietzche and Rudolf Steiner centers on mythological, cosmological themes, and philosophical themes. He is perhaps best known, however, for the nonsense poetry, the most famous of which is "Die Galgenlieder" (The Gallows Song), written in 1895. In 1893, he was diagnosed as having tuberculosis, which ultimately caused his death on 3/31/1914, Merano, Italy. Link to Wikipedia biography

Morgenstern, Christian
(b . May 6, 1871, Munich, Ger.d. March 31, 1914, Meran, South Tirol, Austria-Hungary [now Merano, Italy]), German poet and humorist whose work ranged from the mystical and personally lyrical to nonsense verse. Morgenstern's serious poetry, written first under the influence of Friedrich Nietzsche, includes In Phantas Schloss (1895; "In Phanta's Palace"), in which cosmic, mythological, and philosophical concepts are playfully combined; Ich und die Welt (1898; "I and the World"); Ein Sommer (1900; "One Summer"), which was written in Norway and celebrates physical beauty; and Einkehr (1910; "Introspection") and Wir fanden einen Pfad (1914; "We Found a Path"), poems written under the influence of Buddhism and the anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner. Morgenstern's international reputation came from his nonsense verse, in which he invented words, distorted meanings of common words by putting them into strange contexts, and dislocated sentence structure, but always with a rational, satiric point. Volumes of nonsense verse include Galgenlieder (1905; "Gallows Songs");

    Leben und literarisches Werk von Christian Morgenstern
    Autor des Monats im März 2009
    Der in München geborene Lyriker der Galgenlieder (1905) hat sich in seinem nicht eben langen Leben – er erkrankte bereits als 22jähriger an der schließlich tödlichen Tuberkulose – dem Grotesken verschrieben, mit dem er gegen die Sinnlosigkeit der Welt anzukämpfen versuchte. Neben schwermütigen Gedichten sind seiner Feder auch zahlreiche ironische Verse und Aphorismen entsprungen, die heute noch eine beachtliche Anhängerschaft faszinieren. Biographie Über die Werke Bibliographie Kurzinhalte
    Zitate von und über Leben und literarisches Werk von Christian Morgenstern: Wer ihn liebt, liebt das beste Teil am Deutschtum. Kurt Tucholsky Nun wohl: ein Galgenbruder ist die beneidenswerte Zwischenstufe zwischen Mensch und Universum. Nichts weiter. Man sieht vom Galgen den Mensch anders an, und man sieht andre Dinge als Andre.
