Kliatt July, 2007 by Mary Purucker
MORTIMER, John. Quite honestly. Read by Suzy Aitchison and Toby Longworth. 5 cds. 6 hrs. BBC Audiobooks America. 2006. 0-7927-4478-9. $59.95. Vinyl; plot, author, reader notes. SA Longworth's gruff voice is a good match for Aitchinson's light-hearted cultured tones. Both take on other voices with ease, whatever class or accent. They alternate chapters as Lucinda Purefoy, the bishop's daughter who is interested in doing good, and Terry Keegan, the one to whom good is done after he is paroled. Keegan and his cronies make a living and sometimes more from their burglaries. When Keegan and Lucy fall in love, she feels something is missing; in order to understand him better, perhaps she should try a little thievery? One thing leads to another, and by the end, their roles are reversed. Mortimer's penchant for satire and poking fun at hypocrites on all sides creates a world similar to Sue Townsend's No. 10 and The Queen and I, and of course, his own Rumpole series. Tongue-in-cheek funny, if improbable, this is delightfully done. Mary Purucker, Beverly Hills PL, Beverly Hills, CA SRecommended for senior high school students.

As a barrister in Britain, Sir John came to be known in the 1960s as a defender of free speech and human rights for taking up cases that he said were “alleged to be testing the frontiers of tolerance.” He became a Queen’s Counsel just in time to tackle some of the civil rights cases that arose in Britain in that decade, all the while writing fiction, non-fiction, drama and comedy. skos:inScheme http://data.nytimes.com/elements/nytd_per skos:prefLabel - en Mortimer, John

SUMMARY From the creator of the Rumpole storiesaa novel of middle-class do-gooding gone awry Fans of John Mortimer and his popular Rumpole mysteries will love "Quite Honestly," a comedy filled with a delightful cast of characters and Mortimeras unique and entertaining take on a life of crime. Life couldnat be better for Lucinda Purefoyacollege educated, with a steady boyfriend and a job offer in advertising. With all this good fortune, isnat it appropriate for her to give something back to society? Armed with only good intentions, she joins Social Carers, Reformers and Praeceptors (SCRAP, for short), a misguided organization that recruits women to becomes guides, philosophers, and friends to ex-convicts coming out of prison. Once she meets her charge, Terry Keegan, the ensuing hilarity and mishaps produce a signature Mortimer tale, full of wit and surprise.
