1. Primer To The Mysteries Of Walter Mosley
Primer for the author s books.
http://www.math.buffalo.edu/~sww/mosley/mosley_walter_primer.html
The author Walter Mosley was born in 1952 Los Angeles, California. He attended Goddard College and Johnson State College, and has been a computer programmer. He is currently a professor of English at New York University. Walter Mosley's mystery novels have often been compared to those of Raymond Chandler, mainly because they share vivid settings on the seamy side of Los Angeles in the middle decades of the century, a less-than-rosy view of human nature, and tough but noble main characters in Philip Marlowe and Ezekiel Rawlins There's another similarity: like Chandler, Mosley wields elegant, economical prose to create unforgettable characters. Chief among them is series protagonist Easy Rawlins. In many ways Rawlins is a kind of black Everyman, reflecting the great migration from the South in mid-century. He grew up in Houston, fought in World War II and works hard for a better life in Los Angeles, keenly aware of the boundaries imposed upon him by racism. But Easy is no stereotype; endlessly complex, he continues to surprise and reward readers. Chandler once wrote that the best mysteries are those you would read even if the last chapter were torn out; Easy Rawlins is a character who would make you do just that. Rawlins is not a private eye; he makes his living at everything from real estate to janitorial work. He's a sometime fixer, drawn into mysteries, often against his will, because some friend or connection needs his help. Like many other Black detective/mystery authors (witness

Mosley was born in, Watts, Los Angeles, California . His mother, Ella (née Slatkin), was Polish Jewish and worked as a personnel clerk, and his father, Leroy Mosley, was an African American supervising custodian at a Los Angeles public school from Louisiana who had worked as a clerk in the segregated US army during the Second World War. His parents tried to marry in 1951 but, though the union was legal in California where they were living, no one would give them a license. As an only child, he ascribes his writing imagination to "an emptiness in my childhood that I filled up with fantasies". For $9.50 a week, Walter Mosley attended the Victory

Home Library African American Literature Mosley , Walter (b. 1952), novelist. Born in 1952 to Leroy and Ella Mosley, Walter Ellis Mosley grew up in South Central Los Angeles, the setting for his first four novels. An intelligent and thoughtful young man but an indifferent student, Mosley eventually earned a degree in political science from Johnson State College in Vermont , then worked as a computer programmer for several years before enrolling in a creative writing program at City College New York. Lauded for his perfectly inflected dialogue, his simple but elegant prose, and his vivid characters, Golden Dagger prize-winner Walter Mosley's primary contributions to the detective genre are his hero, Ezekiel (Easy) Rawlins, and his expansion of the mystery novel to chronicle African American social history. Easy Rawlins is a working-class man, a reluctant private eye, prone to sleuthing mistakes and without the usual friends in the profession to ease his way. Easy succeeds because of his common sense, his integrity, and his community ties. Based upon Mosley's father and several acquaintances and created as a realistic black male hero, one who has “flaws that have to be overcome,”
