Farley Mowat
From the 1981 film Ten Million Books: An Introduction to Farley Mowat
National Film Board of Canada
For many years, Farley Mowat has written of the lands, seas and peoples of the Far North with humor, understanding and compassion. Born in Belleville, Ontario in 1921, Mowat grew up in Belleville, Trenton, Windsor, Saskatoon, Toronto and Richmond Hill as his librarian father moved a household that included a miniature menagerie around the country. During World War II Mowat served in the army, entering as a private and emerging with the rank of captain. Following his discharge, Mowat renewed his interest in the Canadian Arctic, an area he had first visited as a young man with an ornithologist uncle. He began writing for his living in 1949 after spending two years in the Arctic. His first novel, People of the Deer , published in 1952, described the plight of the Ihalmiut, inland Eskimos of Keewatin District in the Northwest Territories. A profoundly moving story

Farley McGill Mowat OC (born May 12, 1921, in Belleville, Ontario ) is a conservationist and one of Canada's most widely-read authors. His works have been translated into 52 languages and he has sold more than 14 million books. He achieved fame with the publication of his books on the Canadian North, such as People of the Deer (1952) and Never Cry Wolf The latter, an account of his experiences with wolves in the Arctic , was made into a film, released in 1983. Mowat's advocacy for environmental causes and a writing style that "never let[s] the facts get in the way of the truth," have earned him both praise and criticism: "few readers remain neutral." Nevertheless, his influence is undeniable: Never Cry Wolf is credited with shifting the mythology and fear of wolves . His stories are fast-paced, gripping, personal, and conversational. Descriptions of Mowat refer to his "commitment to ideals," "poetic descriptions and vivid images," but also to his strong antipathies, which provoke "ridicule, lampoons and, at times, evangelical condemnation."

By Farley Mowat
Key Porter, 208 pages
In early September, Canadian church leaders offered sorrow and the hope of reconciliation to the Innu of Newfoundland and Labrador for "500 years of assimilation." The Innu declined the apology, invoking the explicit image of a small boy being forced to take the penis of a priest in his mouth. This event was an odd mixture of blatant PR stunt, deathbed recantation and Greek tragedy, especially as behind the altar of piety and remorse, the Roman Catholic church is actively contesting Innu abuse suits and, with the federal government, denying counselling to Innu who say they have suffered abuse. On the other side of the country, the Anglican diocese of Caribou may declare bankruptcy because of residential school lawsuits; there are almost 6,000 of these lawsuits. In the Maritimes, hung on an exquisitely Solomonic Supreme Court judgment, the native fishermen of Burnt Church throw their lobster traps into the sea, day after day, and Fisheries officials cut them down, night after night, and fires burn on the highway and grown men decline to sit down with one another. Another fragment of the ongoing tragedy. Canadians (nice, conscientious and fair to a fault) would not recognize their mingled history with aboriginal peoples as Greek tragedy, but the hallmarks are there: the awful accumulation of seemingly unconnected events over a very long time; horrors hidden and then revealed; godlike pronouncements and policies dropped on human beings as a foot onto a fly.

Farley Mowat draws from his own authoritative works on Newfoundland to create a fascinating eulogy for traditional life on the Rock. He captures the character of the seafolk, whose chosen life-style remained the same from one generation to the next until they were pushed unwillingly into the twentieth century by the political machinations of Joey Smallwood. From the unification with Canada in 1949 to the present, the government has continued purposefully to dislodge the people from their outport homes and seagoing livelihoods into larger mining and industrial communities, systematically destroying both the natural and human environment in the name of progress. Mowat brings both Newfoundland's past and present to life, taking the reader through the Norse sagas, the first European visits, and the establishment of permanent settlements based on cod fishing and seal hunting. Interspersed with this historical account are Mowat's own experiences while living on the south coast of Newfoundland for several years. With seeming ease he distils the essence of these kind, hardworking, insular people and simultaneously arouses the reader's anger at the destructive excesses wrought by the present technological age.

It is difficult to write a biography of someone as unusual as Farley Mowat, whose writing includes his life stories and an autobiography. John Orange, a recent acquaintance of Mowat's, selected material from his books, letters, films and interviews and printed only what Mowat agreed to; thus, some incidents are omitted. Mowat's writing is "subjective non-fiction" and he distinguishes between "fact" and "truth." The general purpose of his work is to educate and reform but his sense of humour adds a great deal of entertainment. Through his controversial works he has examined the concerns of the Arctic and its native inhabitants, Newfoundland, Siberia, the Vikings, the trauma of World War II, whales and other environmental concerns. Orange sums up Mowat as "anti-authoritarian, intensely nationalistic, environmentally aware, and passionately romantic." The title derives from a "squib," which is the fuse used to ignite explosives or witty writing; both meanings are appropriate. Unfortunately, this small book is a dull portrayal of an exciting Canadian. It does direct the reader to Mowat's own works to find out the "truth" of each reference.

Biography
Canadian writer, a best-selling novelist of "Never Cry Wolf" and "People of the Deer" in which he brought the first public attention to conservation of the Arctic. By 1985 his 26 books had sold over 11 million worldwide translated into 35 languages. A national icon, he ranks as one of the country's foremost writers of nonfiction. Though some say that his stories are more fiction than fact, he spins wonderful tales about the Inuit people in the Arctic, wolves, whales, ships, boyhood pets and World War II. Mowat is best known for his portrayals of the arctic region of Keewatin, where he personally spent time with the natives and the animals in their barren habitat. The research and experiences Mowat accumulated during his arctic retreat [led] to his first novel, People of the Deer (1952), a story which depicts the horrible conditions of the natives and their dwindling food supplies as a direct result of the Canadian federal government’s inaction (Goddard 49). The region of Keewatin also [led] to further of Mowat’s most popular books such as The Desperate People (1959), and Never Cry Wolf (1963). These books continued the arsenal on the federal government’s inability to protect its natives, while beautifully depicting the natural environment of the north. For children, Mowat uses Keewatin as a setting for adventure in Lost in the Barrens (1956), and the sequel The Curse of the Viking Grave (1966). These books team up a young boy from Toronto and a half-native boy from Keewatin. Together, they roam the harsh northern regions of Manitoba, learning as they go. Mowat also uses the mid-western regions of Canada for Owls in the Family (1961), a story which incorporates Mowat’s own pet owls, Wol and Weeps, to illustrate life in the prairies. These books are based in real settings, which Mowat describes with a confident exactness. But the correctness of the descriptions and the evidence they are derived from have often been questioned by critics and scholars. When reading his books, one must remember the subjectivity with which Farley Mowat writes.

Beautiful Account of Eskimo Life Before reading this book, I would never have believed it would receive all 5 stars. However, it is truly beautifully written about the death of a people. The author - who lived with the tribe for 2 years to attempt to understand the people from their point of view - did an expert job of recanting what happened, how it happened. He makes a very determined attempt to see things differently than his point of view. My opinion is that he succeeds in doing so. Though a sociologist, the book is luridly written. It is easy for one to visualize what the writer is experiencing. In modern times, you'd expect such good writing from travel journalist/book writers. Here it is holey unexpected and appreciated.

By Steve Burgess F rance has Napoleon, America has John Wayne, Canada has a way of making you stop reading mid-sentence. Head for the movie reviews if you must, but make no mistake the Great White North does have its heroes. Typically, though, there's nothing intrinsically Canadian about them. In fact, their fame is usually the result of having shed that confining distinction. A truly Canadian celebrity is one who elicits the reaction, "I didn't know X was Canadian." Right. That's why X went to a speech therapist. Farley Mowat is different, and is a northern national icon. Mowat's books "People of the Deer" (1952), "Never Cry Wolf" (1963) and "A Whale for the Killing" (1972), among many others tell stories of the wilderness, the animals and the people of a hard, cold, sublimely beautiful land. It's Canada as the world knows it (when the world spares it a thought). But even aside from his celebrations of terrible northern grandeur, Mowat has two other attributes crucial to any quintessentially Canadian celebrity. First, Mowat is openly suspicious of America. And second, Canadians are suspicious of Mowat. In a country that is definitely on the short end of a sibling rivalry the Frank Stallone of the Western world a little resentment is inevitable. Farley Mowat would be considered a Canadian national treasure just for the frequent kicks he delivers to the American shin and the official enmity he has earned in return. "We Canadians are hardly more than house slaves of the American empire," he wrote in the 1985 book "My Discovery of America." "Of course, we are better off than the field slaves of South America."
