Deuticke 1978 687 Seiten, ISBN: 3216304817 Charles Arrowby hat sich von seinem Leben am Theater zurückgezogen, sich ein kleines, spartanisch eingerichtetes Häuschen am Meer gekauft und plant, hier nun seine Memoiren zu schreiben. Ein Unterfangen, das sich schwieriger gestaltet, als erwartet. Die Worte wollen nicht so recht aus ihm herausfließen, über detaillierte Schilderungen seiner Kochkünste und seiner Schwimmübungen im Meer kommt er anfangs nicht hinaus. Deuticke 1956 397 Seiten, ISBN: 3216305139 London in den frühen 50er Jahren; Annette, die von ihren Diplomaten-Eltern bei alten Freunden untergebracht wurde, beschließt, fortan nicht mehr von der Schule, sondern vom Leben zu lernen; Rosa, die als gebildete, wohlhabende Frau ganz andere berufliche Möglichkeiten gehabt hätte, arbeitet als überzeugte Kommunistin in der Fabrik - und lässt sich auf ein schwieriges, seltsames Verhältnis mit zwei Brüdern aus Osteuropa ein. In Literaturkritiken zu diesem Buch habe ich gelesen, dass es sich bei Mischa Fox um Elias Canetti handeln soll, mit dem Iris Murdoch wohl eine leidenschaftliche Affäre hatte. Mangels genauer Kenntnisse kann ich diese Aussage nur staunend wiederholen - und für mich daraus entnehmen, warum ich diesem bei Erscheinen so hochgelobten Roman nur relativ wenig abgewinnen konnte. Ich hab ihn schlichtweg nicht verstanden.

Als dieser dann nach einiger Zeit einschlief, und ein Mädchen, für das Edward sich interessierte, ihn auf einen Sprung zu sich einlud, ließ er ihn allein. Als Edward eine Stunde später zurück kam, war Mark tot. Er hatte sich aus dem Fenster gestürzt. Der Gedanke an seine Schuld an diesem Tod quält Edward über alle Maßen. Dazu erhält er noch von der Mutter des Toten laufend Briefe, in denen sie ihn verflucht, ihn daran erinnern will, daß er ein Mörder wäre, sie ihm nie verzeihen würde. Edwards ganze Familie versucht, ihm zu helfen. Die Familienverhältnisse sind nicht gerade unkompliziert; aufgewachsen war er bei seinem Stiefvater, der nun (wovon noch keiner etwas ahnt) ein Verhältnis mit Edwards Tante hat. Sein eigentlicher Vater ist ein bedeutender Maler; er hatte ihn nur als Kind hin und wieder gesehen, doch nun spürt er plötzlich, er sollte ihn besuchen. Er erhält eine Einladung in das Haus seines Vaters; und ist überrascht, ihn dann dort gar nicht vorzufinden. Nur dessen Frau und zwei Töchter sind hier; es ist ein seltsames Haus. Alles wird selbst gemacht, kein Strom, kein Telefon - aber langsam fängt Edward an, kleinere Aufgaben zu übernehmen, sich einzuleben und teilweise auch seine Schuld ein wenig leichter zu tragen. Als eines Nachmittags niemand zu Hause ist, macht er sich auf um zumindest die Spuren seines Vaters, sein Arbeitszimmer, zu besichtigen. Und findet ihn dort auch - als sehr kranken, geistig streckenweise sehr verwirrten alten Mann.

Some of her works include "Under The Net," 1954 and "A Severed Head," 1961. She wrote 26 remarkable novels, four plays, four books on philosophy and one book of poetry. She wrote completely in longhand. She decided to be a writer at the age of nine, at the time of having a happy childhood. She not only achieved her goal but received honorary doctorates from major universities and became a Dame of the British Empire. Her husband wrote that she was "the most genuinely modest person" he had ever met. She worked secretly and quietly, not talking about the book she was on, never needing to compare or contrast, never interested in reviews or needing reassurance. An unattractive intellectual, plain and awkward with straggly hair, she managed a feat that is enviable to many beautiful women. She fell in love at first sight and had 32 devoted years with her mate. After her first date with John Bayley, a five-year-younger Oxford don, her journal entry for 6/03/1954 read, "St. Anthony's Dance. Fell down the steps, and seem to have fallen in love with John. We didn't dance much." They married almost three years later, in late 1956; no children. She had, nonetheless, left a trail of former lovers, mostly those who had stimulated her intellectually. Early in 1943 she wrote to a friend that "I should tell you that I have parted company with my virginity... there have been two men. I don't think that I love either one - but I like them."
