    Biography
Austrian novelist, most noted for his three-volume work, "The Man Without Qualities," written from 1923-1940. In the late 20th century critics consider Musil to be one of the preeminent European writers of the century alongside James Joyce and Franz Kafka. An intellectual with a scientific and imaginative mind, Musil was an expert in theoretical physics, experimental psychology and mechanical engineering. He originally studied psychology and philosophy but turned down a teaching post for a career in literature. With his writings, he examined the sterile oppositions and destructive tendencies of his era in Europe. He held contempt for the Nazi party and his revulsion for Communism led to an isolation from a reading audience. In 1938, his books were banned from Germany and Austria, and he sought protection in Zurich, Switzerland. An acute observer of contemporary cultural and social phenomena, he wrote with precision and beauty and was known as a neo-positivist and mystic. Musil was the son of Alfred Musil and his mother Hermine. His father was from an old noble Austrian family and taught at the Technical University of Brunn. Musil grew up as a lonely child spending his hours daydreaming in the family garden or looking out the window when he was in the house. His father felt his son must get into society by becoming an officer in the Imperial Army. At 12, the boy was sent to military school in Eisenstadt, Austria. In 1894, he went to school at a strict, harsh military academy in present-day Hranice in the Czech Republic. It is here where he learned about mechanical engineering and artillery fire. At 17, he went to Vienna to study at the Technical Military Academy. He became unhappy with his officer training courses and left the Academy to study at his father's University of Brunn in 1898.

Photo by The Leo Baeck Institute Overqualified: Viennese chronicler Robert Musil The restoration of Robert Musil's epic novel 'The Man Without Qualities' By Harvey Pekar Austrian writer Robert Musil's first novel, Young Torless , was published in 1906, and from then until several years ago, he was underappreciated. Gradually, though, Musil's been getting his due. With the recent publication by Knopf of the most complete version to date of his massive, unfinished, panoramic novel about Vienna on the eve of World War I, The Man Without Qualities , Musil threatens to become the most frequently discussed of all underrated authors, one whom everyone wants to take credit for discovering. Certainly, Musil should be considered among the great fiction writers of our century, an author of great power and formidable intellect. The son of an engineering professor, Musil (1880-1942) delved into several fields before deciding to be an author. He went to military school as a teenager, then studied civil engineering and spent time in the army. Still uncertain about a career, he returned to school, getting a degree in philosophy in 1908. Meanwhile, however

Jump to: navigation search Previous (Robert Moses) Next (Robert Nozick) Robert Musil Robert Musil (Klagenfurt, Austria , November 6, 1880 - April 15, 1942 in Geneva Switzerland ) was an Austrian writer, author of the unfinished long novel The Man Without Qualities (Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften), one of the most important Modernist novels ever written. Musil led a unique life for a literary author; as a young man he studied engineering, and for several years after graduating from college he worked as an engineer and mathematician. When he ultimately became dissatisfied with science and engineering, Musil switched his focus towards philosophy , earning a doctorate in philosophy and psychology from the University of Berlin. Although Musil had been fascinated by literature most of his life, it was not until well into his academic career as a philosopher that he published his first novel and subsequently dedicated himself to writing fiction As a result of Musil's background, he is an instrumental figure in an emerging field in the scholarly study of literature known as "science studies," or the study of the relation between the sciences and the arts. Musil's fiction, most notably his enormous, unfinished novel The Man Without Qualities is infused with the sharp, philosophical acuity and insight one would expect from an author who had rigorously studied science. In his "novel of ideas" Musil dissects modern European society, with his main character serving as a metaphor for the lack of clarity of vision that allowed the rise of nationalism and ultimately national socialism in Central Europe.
