R. K. Narayan: The Guide: A Study Guide (1958)
Using this Guide List of other study guides R[asipuram] K[rishnaswamy] Narayan (1906-2001) is unusual among Indian authors writing in English in that he has stayed contentedly in his home country, venturing abroad only rarely. He rarely addresses political issues or tries to explore the cutting edge of fiction. He is a traditional teller of tales, a creator of realist fiction which is often gentle, humorous, and warm rather than hard-hitting or profound. Almost all of his writings are set in the fictional city of Malgudi, and are narrowly focused on the lives of relatively humble individuals, neither extremely poor nor very rich. The Guide is one of his most interesting books, which begins as a comic look at the life of a rogue, but evolves into something quite different. It should be noted that Narayan is not a devout Hindu, and has accused Westerners of wrongly supposing that all Indians are deeply spiritual beings; but it is also true that he was deeply impressed by some experiences he had with a medium after the sudden death of his young wife (described movingly in The English Teacher Narayan has stated that the incident of the reluctant holy man was based on a real event which he read about in the newspaper.

R.K. Narayan’s The Guide The setting of R.K. Narayan’s novel, The Guide , as in most of his novels, is Malgudi, a fictional town in southern India. The novel is told through a series of flashbacks. Raju, the central character, grows up near a railway station, and becomes a shopkeeper, and then a resourceful tourist guide. He meets Rosie, a beautiful dancer, and her husband, whom Raju nicknames Marco, because the man dresses in a thick jacket and helmet as if undertaking an expedition, like Marco Polo. Marco is a scholar and anthropologist, who is more interested in his research than in his young wife Rosie. Rosie and Marco engage Raju’s services as a tourist guide, and he takes them sightseeing. She wants to see a king cobra dancing; Marco wants to study cave paintings. Rosie and Marco quarrel constantly, and Marco remains cold and aloof toward Rosie. While Marco is away studying cave paintings, Raju falls in love with Rosie. When Marco discovers that Raju and Rosie have become lovers, Marco abandons her and returns to Madras. Raju becomes infatuated with Rosie. He is so obsessed with Rosie that he forgets his business, falls into debt, and loses his shop at the railway station. He also loses his mother’s respect because he is living with a married woman. Raju’s mother moves out of their house, and the house is claimed to pay off his debts.

Malgudi Days
Malgudi Days is a collection of short stories involving incidents and experiences in the life of the people of this fictional city named Malguidi that remains central to all of Narayan's works. Once again, the stories are not meant to convey something overly profound or insightful but a mere narration of short-lived experiences that in themselves contribute to the realisation of the subtleties of Indian life. Malgudi, a small South Indian town provides the setting for almost all of Narayan's novels and short stories. Malgudi, of course, does not exist. It is for Narayan, just as Wessex is for Thomas Hardy or Yoknapatawpha for William Faulkner, an imaginary landscape inhabited by the unique characters of his stories. In Narayan's words himself: "Malgudi was an earth-shaking discovery for me, because I had no mind for facts and things like that, which would be necessary in writing about Malgudi or any real place. I first pictured not my town but just the railway station, which was a small platform with a Banyan tree, a station master, and two trains a day, one coming and one going. On Vijayadasami I sat down and wrote the first sentence about my town: The train had just arrived in Malgudi Station. "

The stories written with Narayan's simple and characteristic gentle irony portray the variety and colour of Indian Life. Narayan, in his introduction says; `I have named this volume `Malgudi Days' in order to give it a plausibly geographical status. I am often asked, `where is Malgudi?' All I can say is that it is imaginary and not to be found on any map...If I explain that Malgudi is a small town in South India I shall only be expressing a half-truth, for the characteristics of Malgudi seem to me universal.' All I can say is, it was one of the great experiences of my life. In the last 20 years, I became close to him and got to know him well. Narayan did not like anything that was extravagant or sentimental. He enjoyed a good conversation. We would talk late into the night, especially after the death of his daughter, Hema, in 1994. He was a night bird and could stay up till the early hours of the morning. He would wait for me every day and, if I were late, he would call. Going there and spending long hours with him was a terrific experience for me, but I had to finish my other work too. In fact, if I had to go for a long trip, I would tell him it was a short one. Narayan, his son-in-law, Chandrasekhar who is known as Chandru and I would sometimes start our conversation at 10 in the night and keep talking and talking and talking... On some days, we would sit in the drawing room; on other days, in his bedroom; and, on days that the mosquitoes did not trouble us too much, we would sit outside the house. He loved to look at the outside world; he loved greenery. Sometimes, the television would be on but there would be no sound coming from it. He used to say, "What I like the best about the remote control is the mute button."
