Puffing Billy Puffing Billy did not do much puffing this last Sunday, as the total fire ban had forced it's temporary replacement with a diesel.
Still, we had a nice trip up to Emerald lake, and a hurried picnic there as well as a ride on the aquabike (is that what they're called?) before heading back.

Last Saturday we headed out sans an under-the-weather Glen to the Experimentarium
On Sunday we jumped into the car and headed for the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde , Denmark's old capital. For many years there was a rumour that there were Viking-era ships sunk in one of the fjord channels linking Roskilde to the sea. When someone actually got around to checking out the rumour in the late 60's they discovered five vessels buried in one of the channels, presumably to protect the city from seaborne attackers. The recovered ships are now on exhibit in the museum, and craftsmen are also making and sailing new vessels based on the old designs.
Aleks mostly enjoyed the model dioramas and throwing rocks into the water, while

Unsourced material may be challenged and removed (August 2009) The Burning City is a fantasy novel of social and political allegory by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle set in an analogue of Southern California in an imaginary past shortly after the sinking of Atlantis about 14,000 years ago in the twilight of a civilization then struggling and now vanished for lack of of a crucial natural, and essentially non-renewable resource upon which almost all of its economy and technology depended. (In this connection it is perhaps notable that a close relative of Mr. Niven's was a famous pioneer in the petroleum industry.). The vanishing resource is not oil but mana , something vital to the technology of magic and the metabolism of the supernatural. As mana becomes scarce gods sleep and finally die, unicorns get smaller and finally turn into hornless ponies, and magic becomes less and less effective and finally vanishes. The book was published in 2000, and was followed by a sequel

Man of Steel,
Woman of Kleenex
By Larry Niven
Things of the form (* text *) are footnotes in the original text. H e's faster than a speeding bullet. He's more powerful than a locomotive. He's able to leap tall buildings at a single bound. Why can't he get a girl? At the ripe old age of thirty-one (* Superman first appeared in Action Comics, June 1938 *), Kal-El (alias Superman, alias Clark Kent) is still unmarried. Almost certainly he is still a virgin. This is a serious matter. The species itself is in danger! An unwed Superman is a mobile Superman. Thus it has been alleged that those who chronicle the Man of Steel's adventures are responsible for his condition. But the cartoonists are not to blame. Nor is Superman handicapped by psychological problems. Granted that the poor oaf is not entirely sane. How could he be? He is an orphan, a refugee, and an alien. His homeland no longer exists in any form, save for gigatons upon gigatons of dangerous, prettily colored rocks. As a child and young adult, Kal-El must have been hard put to find an adequate father-figure. What human could control his antisocial behavior? What human would dare try to punish him? His actual, highly social behavior during this period indicates an inhuman self-restraint. What wonder if Superman drifted gradually into schizophrenia? Torn between his human and kryptonian identities, he chose to be both, keeping his split personalities rigidly separate. A psychotic desperation is evident in his defense of his "secret identity."

Science Fiction
Sehr viele Menschen glaubten von Urzeiten an, dass es wundersame Lebewesen gäbe. So lag es auf der Hand, dass es auch Schriftsteller gab, die diese Urangst ausnutzten und eine neue Art von Literatur schufen.
Larry Niven - "man of steel, woman of kleenex"
known space: the future worlds of larry niven

A crucial insight finally allows our crew to get spaceborne again but they leave one member behind. Who stays on the Ringworld with the companionship of a native? Larry Niven's "Ringworld"

Teela . Separated for some weeks from her companions, distraught and stuck with a broken flycycle, Teela Brown finds comfort with a half-Engineer Ringworld native, Seeker. "[He] was so blatantly type-cast that [Louis] burst out laughing ... He was a hero. You could tell. You didn't need to see him fighting dragons. You need only see the muscles, the height, the black metal sword ..." Seeker is on a quest to walk to the base of the Arch not realizing that the Arch is merely the other half of the Ringworld, and that it has no base at all. Teela falls in love with him, and follows him, at least for now; this is where her luck wants her to be. Louis, meanwhile, works out a brilliant way to get the ship off the Ringworld and back home but for that, you'll have to read this excellent book for yourself!
When our heroes arrive at the Ringworld, they begin by making careful observations to better understand who and what they're dealing with. Unfortunately, this research period is abruptly ended when they are forced to crash land on the surface. Why?
