Introduction
Looked at in a different light, however, words become a liquid medium, a malleable substance capable of being transformed in surprising ways.
Vurt Pollen and Nymphomation ) form a story cycle about a Manchester populated by humans and strange hybrid creatures (such as Dogs, Robos and Shadows) whose lives are rooted around the enigmatic Vurt feathers. Automated Alice also has connections to this sequence, as do some of the stories found in Pixel Juice . While there is a timeline, and some shared minor characters, each book is very much self-contained. And although the novels are set in the same city, Noon leaves many details about his fictional reality deliberately blurry. There is no clear-cut distinction between the cycle and the other works, and Noon has continued to develop his core themes and narrative concerns in his post- Pixel Juice
A number of labels have been applied to Noon's works, many of which he would dismiss as inadequate. In fact, he has come up with labels of his own, and so the various books fall neatly into the genres of avant pulp, metamorphiction, post futurism and surrealist noir. Of the above, it is avant pulp that best encapsulates his desire to merge narration with innovation. Noon writes unmistakably human-sized works: his focus is on the individual, his intent is to engage the contemporary imagination.
Noon has a keen interest in the possibilities of storytelling and the English language. Because of the continual process of experimentation and re-evaluation, each work carries a welcome roughness, a sense of urgency. What is more, he has been going from strength to strength:

Game Cat warned the kittlings, but it seems some of you ticklers didn't take the hint and went for the CURIOUS YELLOW in the GEN-X feather. Game Cat doesn't like his warnings being unheeded. This CREATIVE ride you are on is a bad scratch on the right-hemisphere of thought. Take more than a glass of Fetish to wash this strange taste off your palate. Once CREATIVE Vurt is in you, it's gonna take some soul-shaking to find the door. Game Cat reminds you, no jerk-outs, no turning back. Never touch the CURIOUS YELLOW unless you like the mind-burn. -MS- == For Those Seeking Knowledge ==
Demen Tia walks down the dark and cold alley behind the Vurt-U-Want ...she can feel the dampness in the night air. As she reaches the end of the alley, she turns and heads for the park. It's quiet in the park at night and she goes to her favorite tree and climbs up. Leaning back into the large limb, she pulls her 'find' out. It is a English Voodoo, Yes, found it...just blowing across the alley. She had looked quickly around in disbelief and scooped it up and put it in the pocket of her worn leather jacket. And now, she can have it...alone. Demen always craves knowledge..and an English Voodoo is indeed a good 'find'!!

excellent book Noon's Vurt is one of my all time favorite books. Nymphomation is a prequel of sorts to Vurt, which explains what led to the dreamdrug-world obsessed universe of Vurt. PLAY TO WIN! After reading Vurt I wanted to know more about the world of dystopian Manchester. Many things are not explicitily explained in Vurt such as Vaz, and the origin of the Vurt feathers. Nymphomation steps in and answers these mysteries (sort of). What I liked about Vurt and Nympho was that Jeff Noon explains the basic properties of some of these items while still leaving enough to the readers imagination and their own interpreation. On to Nymphomation. While this book is not as good as Vurt (a hard act to follow) Nympho is good in its own right. Interesting characters, imaginitively written, you really can't go wrong with this book. I think Nympho actually borderlines Bizarro fiction rather than Cyberpunk/Sci-fi. But if you like hard cypberpunk and Sci-Fi you should still check this one out. If Amazon allowed half-star ratings this would be easily a 4 1/2 , with Vurt being a full 5. Read Vurt first though!

17. Jeff Noon: Needle In The Groove - An Infinity Plus Review
A review from Infinity Plus.
http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/nonfiction/needle.htm
Needle in the Groove by Jeff Noon
(Anchor, paperback, 288 pages, £9.99.)
Accompanying audio CD - in collaboration with David Toop, Sulphur Records. Jeff Noon is an undisputed master of the unconventional, a science fiction writer who has appeal outside the genre, a rare thing and even rarer for a British writer. Noon wears his roots and geographical location on his sleeve, and it will come as no surprise to those of you familiar with his work to hear that his latest book is set in.... Manchester. Needle in the Groove comes hard on the heels of that dense slice of Noon's shorter works, Pixel Juice , and shares publisher and mod cover design. Needle in the Groove is rooted firmly in Noon's love of dance and drug culture and those without a knowledge of the background may find the jargonising and shortcuts confusing. The book appears to have been marketed on the strength of its unconventional format but on reading it is surprisingly linear and conventional in its approach, the only apparent nonconformity being the novel approach to punctuation - very little of it, normal paragraph structure replaced, for the most part, with slashes. This works surprisingly well, complementing the choppy prose. The story centres on Elliot, a bass player who stumbles across weird band who appear to have discovered a liquid drug containing continuously remixing dance music. When 2spot, the enigmatic drummer and heart of the band, disappears, Elliot tries to track him down and becomes involved in an epic quest that involves Manchester's heritage as a city of music, the days of punk and acid house, and 2spot's family skeletons.

Review of Jeff Noon's Vurt
Mark Amerika
(originally published in The Philadelphia Inquirer
About ten years ago, the mainstream science fiction community went through a jarring change with the introduction of a new style of writing published by authors like William Gibson, Bruce Sterling and John Shirley. The ensuing cyberpunk movement that grew out of novels like Neuromancer, Total Eclipse and Islands In the Net, was said to have successfully mixed popular genre fiction with a decidedly high-tech, streetwise edge in such an original way that it signaled the beginning of an emerging counterculture where the computer hacker and the gothic rocker would overlap in a cultural Petri dish thus creating a new kind of sensibility that would appeal to hordes of young readers looking for something strange to bite into. Since then, the mixing of genre fiction with a more avant-garde edginess to it has led to all kinds of wildly hybridized forms of writing, most notably Mark Leyner's twisted novels of megalomaniacal perversity and Kathy Acker's philosophical investigations of sexuality, human desire and the influential role of media-technology in our day to day lives. One of the more interesting curiosities about these changes is that almost all of the authors writing these alternative novels are American. But with the release of Jeff Noon's debut novel, Vurt, we finally get a chance to check out one of the most explosive new voices to materialize in the British scene in years.
