  • "There are echoes of Burroughs/Gysin's cut-up method, surrealist automatic writing, and, most prominently, the Oulipo's literature of constraint. Many of the pieces take on a visual form reminiscent of concrete poetry, which is enhanced by the inclusion of illustrations by Daniel Allington (...) In Cobralingus he's definitely created an experimental work you can dance to." -

SUMMARY Vurt is a feathera drug, a dimension, a dream state, a virtual reality. It comes in many colors: legal Blues for lullaby dreams. Blacks, filled with tenderness and pain, just beyond the law. Pink Pornovurts, doorways to bliss. Silver feathers for techies who know how to remix colors and open new dimensions. And Yellowsthe feathers from which there is no escape. The beautiful young Desdemona is trapped in Curious Yellow, the ultimate Metavurt, a feather few have ever seen and fewer still have dared ingest. Her brother Scribble will risk everything to rescue his beloved sister. Helped by his gang, the Stash Riders, hindered by shadowcops, robos, rock and roll dogmen, and his own dread, Scribble searches along the edges of civilization for a feather that, if it exists at all, must be bought with the one thing no sane person would willingly give.

Jeff Noon: Nymphomation
Chris Mitchell After giving Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland electric shock treatment last year in Automated Alice , Jeff Noon's new novel Nymphomation returns to the near-future Manchester of his first two books, Vurt and Pollen . While Automated Alice was an audacious exercise in seeing quite how far he could push reinventing a classic, Nymphomation sees Noon's unique writing style hit its most frenetic peak on the cardiac monitor so far. Located somewhere between William Gibson and Philip K. Dick's nightmare noir future visions, Noon brings a peculiarly English sensibility and a twisted sense of humour to the cyberpunk genre. Nymphomation also adds deadly satire to Noon's arsenal: the near future Manchester has become obsessed with the new citywide lottery game Domino Bones. Players purchase a handful of dominoes and every Friday night the winning numbers are illuminated on the body of the voluptuous figurehead of the game, Lady Luck. For the winner, it is unimaginable riches, for the loser another week to wait for the bones to fall again. But there is only one winner, The Company, who play the city's fragile expectations with callous ease. For British readers, this will all sound uncomfortably familiar, especially as the excesses of the National Lottery are coming under increasing scrutiny.

Pollen - by Jeff Noon
Coyote looks at the...(360K .au) "Coyote looks at the young girl. Her face is very beautiful. He feels like a bee, drawn to that sight, that perfume. So tempting. He doesn't know where to look. He looks over to the trees of Alexandra Park. Does no good. He has to look back. Those sparkling eyes of green, they look just like two flowers staring deep into him. The girl's young and full lips, like two trembling petals. 'Kiss me,' she says. This girl must be eleven years old at the most, but Coyote's lips cannot help but descend to hers, tasting the pollen. He can feel her tongue pushing deep into his throat..." Coyote, Black Cab driver, renegade, and unknowing carrier of the plague into a future Manchester which becomes a battleground between dreams and reality. In Pollen, Jeff Noon weaves a complex enchantment of past and future, myth and gritty detail, that plays on the most insidious of our present fears. Are we losing ourselves to the escapist charms of Virtual Reality? Will Nature rebel against our kind and reclaim her domain? Will we become monstrous victims of our own science and technology? Many of the techniques of future zone writing are employed here. Strange half-humans become emblematic of the less palatable sides of our nature, and inhabit a wired city where the price of convenience is Big Brother control. But Noon handles it with humour - a hippy DJ called Gumbo YaYa with just as scary omniscience, battles Columbus, a cab controller, and his cop sidekick Kracker.

35. Interview With Jeff Noon
An interview which covers musical and comic book influences, differences between British and American versions of his books, getting Vurt published, the internet, and genres.
http://www.altx.com/int2/jeff.noon.html
As Per VURT
Nile Southern and Mark Amerika go Vurtin' with British novelist Jeff Noon, author of a fantastically successful first-novel, just released in The US this February by Crown.
He forced my mouth wide open; the fingers of one hand squeezing my cheeks, the other hand pushing the feather home, deep, to the back of the throat. I could feel it there, tickling, making me want to gag. And then the Vurt kicked in. And then I was gone. I felt the opening advurts roll, and then the credits. The pad went morphic and my last thoughts were; Why are we doing this? Skull Shit? It's so low-level, it's even got advurts in it. We should be going higher, searching for lost love . Instead we were just playing, just playing at "When I think of The Vurt, I see it as like a collection of every story that's ever been written or ever imagined by human beings almost like a planet of stories. My relationship to all this is as an explorer of this world that I don't have much clue about."
Nile:
Your writing is very musical, and Vurt features aspects of the Club-scene and Dubhow influenced is your writing by what's going on in music today?

37. Jeff Noon Interview
An interview by the Preston SF Group.
http://www.tulketh.high.btinternet.co.uk/kimota/articles/j_noon.htm
Jeff Noon interviewed by the Preston SF Group 11/4/95 Jeff Noon is the author of the cult novel VURT and its sequel POLLEN. However, asyou will see from this interview, he has been working in other areas for a long timebefore he started writing novels. Jeff started by reading the first chapter of Pollen stimulating the first question. Was hay fever something you suffered from in childhood? It was. It was bad when I was a kid. I haven't suffered for years now, but there werethese wheat fields higher up behind the house. So we used to play in it and camehome with eyes streaming. But I haven't suffered for ages now. Touch wood. What were you doing before you started to write? I was doing lots of different things. I was painting and playing music and eventuallyI ended up doing some stand-up stuff around the pubs in Ashton (in Manchester). They were more like one-man shows, really. This is going back to the late 70s. Justthe start of the alternative comic scene and all that. And I got this idea that maybe Iwas an actor. So eventually I ended up going to college and studying painting and drama combined arts. During which time I discovered that I wasn't in fact an actor. At the end of that course, I decided that I would stop doing lots of things and just concentrate on one, and I chose the most difficult thing I could do. Because I find it easy to paint and music; I can do it, but writing I found very difficult... but exciting. So I started writing plays and had a lot of success with my first play, Woundings, which was put on at the Royal Exchange in Manchester. Which made me think that this is it. This is my life, this is what I am. But it didn't turn out like that at all. And for eight years I was really struggling after that. I had more or less decided that maybe it was time to change. That I wasn't a playwright, that I'd do something else, but I didn't know what. I finally ended up working in Waterstones in Manchester around that time, and I was there for about five years. And Steve Powell was also working there. We were always getting drunk and plotting our escape from this shop. One day he came up to me and said he was starting his own publishing company and would I write him a novel?

Posted on: 26th October 2010 by: admin It had always been a dream of ours to own a yacht and spend our retirement cruising around the Mediterranean. Thanks to a very lucrative career in the insurance industry, that dream was able to become a reality. We decided to buy a yacht in Spain where prices were more reasonable compared to the UK and where mooring rates were significantly lower. In order to save money on the purchase I employed a private currency broker . He managed the money transfer for me and ensured that I got the best conversion rate possible. We’ve had our yacht for six months now and are thoroughly enjoying our new life style on the water.

Posted on: 26th October 2010 by: admin My trip to America with two of my best friends was amazing. We travelled around the country for four weeks and spent time in all the big cities including New York, Boston, and Las Vegas. I was so busy having a great time that I neglected to keep an eye on my finances. Before I knew it, I was standing before the ATM being told that I did not have sufficient funds. It wasn’t until I got home that I also found out about the bank charges I had incurred. Because I had gone over my agreed overdraft, the bank had charged me over one hundred pounds.

Jeff Noon : Automated Alice : Fairytales From The Future
Bethan Roberts talks to Jeff Noon about his new novel Automated Alice What's really nice about Jeff Noon is that, firstly, I can use a word like "nice" about him (not, I expect, a word most cyberpunks would be comfortable with), and secondly, beyond the street-level-city-techno-punkiness that precedes him in the form of his novels Vurt and Pollen lurks a sense of humour. It's such a relief to find the macho/computer-nerd expertise sometimes seen in cyberpunk is apparently not for him. Reader, I want you to know that Jeff Noon has admitted to me that he just makes it up. He's no "method" author, relentlessly seeking out the truth that must lie within years of research. In fact, he's rather proud of the fact that "I know nothing at all about science or technology, and I'm bored by descriptions of how spaceships and computers work..." Labelling works of fiction is often bloody annoying for authors who, for the most part, would like to think there's a difference between writing and production. Predictably, Noon is keen to reject the cyberpunk label, even though he has been named its "foremost British exponent", and this must have had its uses. He insists that "writers don't choose the labels, we just live them". However, "for want of a better word" he does call his new book
