Given the fact that budgetary restraints will continue, what programs do you support and what programs would you cut and why? Please be specific. 2. What do you see as the role of the Board in labor negotiations? The Board must negotiate fairly with all employee unions and non represented workers. This applies to all wages, benefits, working conditions and disciplinary actions. The Board must not discriminate in any manner. 3. What suggestions/ideas do you have for increasing alumni and community support for the colleges? Continue to use the Foothill-DeAnza College Foundation in a lead role for raising donations from the community and alumni. Responses to questions asked of each candidate are reproduced as submitted to the League. Because these questions and answers will be used in a paper Voter Guide, candidates are limited to a total of 300 words for all 3 questions (an average of 100 words per question). Answers will not be edited or corrected by the League of Women Voters. "Beasts" is Book 12 in the venerable and controversial "Gor" series of 25 science fiction novels written by John Norman (the pseudonym of a philosophy professor at a respected university in New York). Beginning with the first book in the series, "Tarnsman of Gor" (1966), Norman has spun tales of the planet Gor, also known as "Counter-Earth" because it occupies a position in our solar system exactly opposite us on the other side of the sun. This shadow planet's gravity is weaker than ours, which probably accounts for the preternatural perkiness of all the women's breasts in the books' illustrations. In Gor's violent, low-tech society, men are Men and women are slaves. This, the novels say and say and say and say again is the proper and rightful state of things because it is in consonance with the true evolved nature of the sexes. The basic Gorean culture is modeled on the ancient city-states of Greece and Asia Minor, but there are variants of other cultures, too, like the Mongols, the Vikings, the Inuit and various African tribes.

The series was, for three decades, one of the best-selling science fiction series in history, was published in numerous countries and extensively reprinted. Yet Norman's books were highly controversial, and within their narrative was a running commentary dealing with many serious social issues, ranging from environmentalism to the complex workings of human sexuality. Previously known as the Nootka People, they were renown for their carvings. Norman John learned to carve from his father at an early age. Jimmy John past on the beliefs and traditions to his son through his carvings. Background...... The carvings of both Norman John and his father Jimmy John, relate to a story that has been handed down in their family for generations. Norman's poles of the Raven and the Sea-serpents is also a tribute to a story of the Nootka people. Many years have past since the wars of the West Coast peoples. The Chief of the Nootka, brought together his carvers and had them carve the Sea Serpent, Wolf and Maquinna mask-feast bowls . A message was sent out to all the tribes to come together to lay out the boundaries and territories for the tribes which were honored by all. The feast-masks are still used today to dance and celebrate marriages, the naming of children and memorial potlatches.

Welcome to the Different Department Philosophy, like most things important, eludes definition. We do know that the expression stems from two Greek words which, conjoined, may be translated as the love of wisdom. In this school, as in many others, there is a "department" of philosophy, as there is a department of anthropology, of sociology, of physics, and so on. The second reason it is misleading to think of philosophy as a "department" is because philosophy is essential to, and permeates, all departments. The third reason it is misleading to think of philosophy as one department among others, in the same sense, is that philosophy concerns itself, often, with certain pervasive, general questions which do not admit of being confined within the walls of given specialties; they are questions which concern all human beings, and the human being as a rational, wondering animal, rather than the human being as, say, a physicist, a sociologist, an economist or anthropologist. What, in the final analysis, is the nature of reality? Does it have a meaning or purpose? Is there a Divine Entity? Is the human being free? Is the world a deterministic system? Is there an objective morality? Do I have moral duties? What are the limits, if any, of human understanding? What am I? What might I become?

When my father, Norman John Gillies, was born on St Kilda in house number 15 there was silence. There was not the usual cry that accompanies most babies when they are born. Frantically they tried putting him from cold water to hot to stimulate some sort of response but it was no good, his grandmother Annie said "there's no breath in him, lie him down". Obviously his mother must have been distraught. This, her first child, surely wasn't to be stillborn. Hoping against hope the midwife picked him up and smacked him on the small of the back. The child sucked in some air and let out a wail! What joy there must have been. Norman John Gillies, named after two of his uncles drowned in a boating expedition in 1909, has neither been still nor quiet ever since! For my grandfather, John Gillies, life had already dealt a harsh blow. His pregnant wife, Mary, had become ill in the February of 1930 with suspected appendicitis and was taken to Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow. Norman's most vivid memory is of standing on the jetty and waving to his mother as she was being rowed out to the boat anchored in Village Bay. Complications must have set in as his father John stayed on to be with her. He was given a job in Glasgow by his uncle, AG Ferguson, by then a fairly wealthy tweed merchant. The baby was delivered by caesarian section on 13 May. Unfortunately only thirteen days later his mother, aged just 35, died and baby Annie also.
