O'Connor, Flannery
Flannery O¢Connor, was born on March 25, 1925 in Savannah, Georgia. She went to parochial school in Savannah, and when her father became ill with Lupus her family moved to Milledgeville, Georgia, where she attended public high school. O¢Connor¢s family were devout Catholics, and her own religious beliefs were prominent themes in her work. In 1942, O¢Connor entered Georgia State College for women. At Georgia State, she wrote for a literary magazine and graduated with a degree in English. In 1945, she entered the writing program at the University of Iowa and earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing. After leaving the University of Iowa, she attended the Yaddo artists¢ colony near Saratoga Springs, New York and then lived in Connecticut and New York. However, while living in New York she became ill with lupus and returned to Milledgeville to live with her mother. She lived on her family¢s farm raising peacocks, which featured in her stories, for the rest of her life. In 1952

  • ASIN: Customer Reviews: Classic Now that I've read everything by O'Connor (including works that were part of her thesis for her degree in writing) I am still amazed and inspired by her work. I'm not from the south or Catholic and I was not alive during the eras of which she wrote, but her writing transcends region and time. My favorites remain A Good Man is Hard to Find, Everything That Rises Must Converge, and Revelation, but I love all her stories, although I find the novels a bit more challenging - I think short story was her finest form. Her ability to mix desperation and violence with comedy is amazing, and often when I read her I think: "I shouldn't be laughing at that." I often wonder what additional work she would have produced if she had not died so young. Highly recommended. Great literature in great binding I am thoroughly enjoying this authoritative collection of O'Connor's writings. The writing speaks for itself as truly great and unique. This particular book is very classy and well put together; an excellent choice for someone with a significant interest in O'Connor.

Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964) American writer, particularly acclaimed for her stories which combined comic with tragic and brutal. Along with authors like Carson McCullers and Eudora Welty, Flannery O'Connor belonged to the Southern Gothic tradition that focused on the decaying South and its damned people. O'Connor's body of work was small, consisting of only thirty-one stories, two novels, and some speeches and letters. "Does one's integrity ever lie in what he is not able to do? I think that usually it does, for free will does not mean one will, but many wills conflicting in one man, Freedom cannot be conceived simply." (from Wise Blood, Flannery O'Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia, the only child of a Catholic family. The region was part of the 'Christ-haunted' Bible belt of the Southern States. The spiritual heritage of the region shaped profoundly O'Connor's writing as described in her essay "The Catholic Novelist in the Protestant South" (1969). O'Connor's father, Edward F. O'Connor, was a realtor owner. He worked later for a construction company and died in 1941. Her mother, Regina L. (Cline) O'Connor, came from a prominent family in the state - her father had been a mayor of Milledgeville for many years. When O'Connor was 12, her family moved to Milledgeville, her mother's birthplace. She attended the Peabody High School and enrolled in the Georgia State College for Women. At school she edited the college magazine and graduated in 1945 with an A.B. O'Connor then continued her studies at the University of Iowa, where she attended writer's workshops conducted by Paul Engle. At the age of 21 she published her first short story, 'The Geranium', in
