From the Hardcover edition. Customer Reviews: Support from a chronic fan As one of Olds' fans for many years, I am the owner of most of her books. Her book The Father still brings me to tears. I want to buy this additional one in support, as are others, of her letter to Laura Bushand of her ongoing brilliance and honesty as a poet. Support of Sharol Olds After reading her letter to Mrs. Bush, I'm supporting Sharon Old's rejection of Laura Bush's invitation to participate in the National Book Festival and breakfast at the White House by buying one of her books. Thank you, Sharon Olds for making this brave and costly stand. I hope others will buy your books to support you and your honesty. I look forward to becoming acquainted with your poetry. If her poems are as moving as her letter to Laura...

    The poet talks about breathing,

of getting out of art's way
    By DWIGHT GARNER
Illustration by Charlie Powell D omesticity, death, erotic love the stark simplicity of Sharon Olds' subjects, and of her plain-spoken language, can sometimes make her seem like the brooding Earth Mother of American poetry. ("I have learned to get pleasure," Olds wrote in her last book, "from speaking of pain.") In photographs she tends to look somewhat dark and remote, too; there's a sense of brewing drama. She seems a natural heir to such melancholy talents as Ann Sexton and Sylvia Plath. It's a happy surprise, then, to discover that the 54-year-old Olds is anything but withdrawn and more-serious-than-thou. In fact, she comes across as a bundle of nervous energy, slightly neurotic, a bit like an intellectual Julie Haggerty. It's the end of the semester at New York University, where Olds has taught in the Graduate Creative Writing Program for the last 12 years, and the atmosphere outside her small office is chaotic. Olds herself arrives a few minutes late, looking slightly harried, and apologizes profusely while pulling two paper cups of tea from a brown bag one for herself, one for a visitor. It's hard to blame her for seeming a little breathless. In addition to her multiple duties at NYU, Olds runs the poetry workshop she founded in 1984 at New York's Goldwater Hospital for the severely disabled, and she reads at numerous speaking engagements. What's more, she claims to have such a backlog of poetry that when she does find the time to issue a new book such as "The Wellspring" (Knopf), published earlier this year it is generally made up of work written more than a decade earlier.

    Brief Bio
Born in San Francisco in 1942, Sharon Olds was educated at Stanford University and Columbia University, where she earned her doctorate in 1972. Shortly after moving to New York, she heard poet Muriel Rukeyser at a reading in 1967 and fell in love with her "musical and fluid" voice. She then took a poetry appreciation class with Rukeyser. However it wasn't until 1972, after being awarded her Ph.D., that she started to write her own poetry. She recalls, "I remember leaving my alma mater and making a vow as I walked down the steps, which, because of my early training, I thought was a vow to Satan, 'I will give up everything I've learned if I can just write my own poems.' And then I realized it wasn't Satan, it wasn't God, it was myself I was talking to. And the next day I wrote poems." Her first book of poems, Satan Says, was published in 1980, when she was thirty-seven. Her poems examine a diverse range of topics from sexual passion and giving birth to an alcoholic father and nursing a child through a high fever. She is renowned for her vivid language and unambiguous imagery. Although her poems are personal in nature, she adamantly insists on a separation between her life and her work. She explains, "Having written what I like to call 'apparently personal' poetry, it's left me with a kind of double desire-one is to protect people, the other is to protect poems and poetry."

Sharon Olds was born in 1942 in San Francisco . She was raised as a “hellfire Calvinist ”, as she describes it. She says she was by nature "a pagan and a pantheist" and notes "I was in a church where there was both great literary art and bad literary art, the great art being psalms and the bad art being hymns. The four-beat was something that was just part of my consciousness from before I was born." She adds "I think I was about 15 when I conceived of myself as an atheist, but I think it was only very recently that I can really tell that there's nobody there with a copybook making marks against your name." After graduating from Stanford University she moved east to earn a Phd in English from Columbia University on the prosody of Emerson's poems. I want to live. I

    Description
A powerful collection from one of our most gifted and widely read poets-117 of her finest poems drawn from her seven published volumes. Michael Ondaatje has called Sharon Olds's poetry "pure fire in the hands" and cheered the "roughness and humor and brag and tenderness and completion in her work as she carries the reader through rooms of passion and loss." This rich selection exhibits those qualities in poem after poem, reflecting, moreover, an exciting experimentation with rhythm and language and a movement toward an embrace beyond the personal. Subjects are revisited-the pain of childhood, adolescent sexual stirrings, the fulfillment of marriage, the wonder of children-but each recasting penetrates ever more deeply, enriched by new perceptions and conceits. Strike Sparks is a testament to this remarkable poet's continuing and amazing growth.
