Charles Olson
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Charles Olson (27 December 1910 – 10 January 1970), was a second generation American modernist poet who was a crucial link between earlier figures like Ezra Pound and William Carlos Williams and the New American poets , a rubric which includes the New York School , the Black Mountain School , the Beat poets, and the San Francisco Renaissance . Consequently, many postmodern groups, such as the poets of the Language School , include Olson as a primary and precedent figure. Across the Atlantic, these various poetic movements have exerted a deep and ongoing influence on an important array of alternative and experimental writers, including Roy Fisher Geoffrey Hill JH Prynne and Edwin Morgan , behind whose works lurks Olson's ghost of language-driven inventiveness. Olson coined the term postmodern in a letter of 1949 to his friend and fellow poet, Robert Creeley. Accretions to the term since Olson coined it are voluminous and often scholastic and arcane, but he first used the word in a literal chronological sense, i.e., that he and Creeley and other artists of his time came after the great Modernists such as Pound, Williams, D.H. Lawrence, Henry Miller, Stravinsky, Glenn Gould, Georgia O'Keefe, Frida Kahlo, Cartier-Bresson, Andre Kertez, Kandinsky, Picasso, Marsden Hartley, Brancusi, Boccioni, Marinetti, Chaplin, Keaton, D. W. Griffith, G.W. Pabst, Fritz Lang, Orson Welles, John Grierson, Frank Lloyd Wright, etc., etc.

4. The Charles Olson Festival
A report by Loss Peque o Glazier.
http://epc.buffalo.edu/authors/glazier/o-rpt.html
The Charles Olson Festival Honoring the Life and Work of Charles Olson:
August 12, 1995
Gloucester City Hall, Gloucester, Mass. A Report
[Special thanks to the Poetry Project Newsletter , where this report was first printed.] i. THIS FESTIVAL, which seemed to me under-advertised, certainly had no lack of attendance. The grand City Council Chamber of the Gloucester City Hall was packed from its main floor to its balcony curving around three quarters of the high-ceiling hall, despite nearly unbearable heat (and David McArdle pointed out that the heat was not inappropriate: Olson himself had stood in this same room to argue for the preservation of Gloucester on some equally sultry nights). The hall bore a festival banner beneath a colorful mural of historic Gloucester emblazoned with the words, "Build Not For Today But For Tomorrow As Well" (to which Creeley during his comments added, "and for yesterday") and enormous prints of Lynn Swigart's photographs from Olson's Gloucester (Louisiana State University Press). Though some of the attendees had traveled some distance to the conference-getting there however possible-what struck me most about this festival was its local presence.

10. Charles Olson And "Projective Verse"
Olson s definitions of Projective Verse, and Composition by Field.
http://unix.cc.wmich.edu/~cooneys/poems/proj.verse.html
[I've been reading a biography of Charles Olson, certainly the largest figure in American poetics since Pound and Williams, mentor to Creeley and others of the Black Mountain group, author of the Maximus poems, etc. (He's said to have been the first to use the word "postmodern", incidentally.) Olson wrote a manifesto called Projective Verse, (1) A poem is energy transferred from where the poet got it (he will have some several causations), by way of the poem itself to, all the way over to, the reader. . . . the poem itself must, at all points, be a high energy-construct and, at all points, an energy-discharge. So: how is the poet to accomplish same energy, how is he, what is the process by which a poet get in, at all points energy at least the equivalent of the energy which propelled him in the first place, yet an energy which is peculiar to verse alone and which will be, obviously, also different from the energy which the reader, because he is a third term, will take away? This is the problem which any poet who departs from closed form is specially confronted by. And it involves a whole series of new recognitions. From the moment he ventures into FIELD COMPOSITIONputs himself in the openhe can go by no track other than the one the poem under hand declares, for itself. Thus he has to behave, and be, instant by instant, aware. . . .

Description
Praised by his contemporaries and emulated by his successors, Charles Olson (1910-1970) was declared by William Carlos Williams to be "a major poet with a sweep of understanding of the world, a feeling for other men that staggers me." Charles Olson if i told you where if first saw this poetry volume you won't believe me :-) usually my attention to new or other authors comes from books or authors i've previously read or on occasion on a friend's recommendation. however, watching the movie "Bob Dylan: No Direction Home" on DVD i saw this book among a stack of papers on Izzy Young's desk during him being interviewed.

Singularity Sky
by Charles Stross
A book review by Mark L. Olson
Ace 2003, $23.95, 313 pp
This is the first novel that Stross has had published in book form. (His excellent The Atrocity Archive was serialized in Spectrum SF .) He's done a fine job with it. Singularity Sky is a piece of hard SF which is set well after a Singularity which occurred in the mid 21st century. In this Singularity, Mankind didn't transcend, but someone or something Humanity and the Eschaton inhabit a universe where FTL travel is possible and, as Stross quite correctly notes, FTL travel means time travel. While the Eschaton indulges in time travel now and then it allows no one else to do so. (The Eschaton's first public act was to abduct most of humanity and seed it in colonies spread over thousands of light years of space and back thousand of years in time, so that when what was left of Terrestrial humanity made it to the stars around 2100, there were human civilizations just as old as Earth's everywhere. Stross cleverly has the Eschaton time the colony foundations so that none of them are in our past light-cone until after it has announced itself.) The Eschaton forbids time travel which might violate causality and forbids causality-violation weaponry. It forbids them

OLSON, Charles The Maximus Poems NY, Jargon/Corinth Books, 1960. The limited edition of the first combined edition of these poems, originally published in 1953 and 1956 in a pair of oversize limited editions. One of the most important achievements of American poetry in the postwar era, on a par with Pound's Cantos and Williams' Paterson . Olson influenced an entire generation of poets by virtue of his presence at Black Mountain College in the Fifties, and The Maximus Poems stands as his major poetic work. One of 75 numbered copies; the total hardcover printing consisted of 101 copies. This copy is inscribed by the author in 1965. Fine, without dust jacket, as issued.
