ONDAATJE, Michael Tin Roof (Lantzville, B.C.), Island Writing Series, 1982. Poetry, issued in an edition of 500 copies, 50 of which were clothbound, numbered and signed. This is a hardcover copy, unnumbered, but signed by the author . A scarce Ondaatje "A" item, which seems to have received little distribution. We have never seen the hardcover issue before and do not know if the 50 copies ever were numbered and this one is therefore an out-of-series copy, or if they were not numbered at all; most of the softcovers that have appeared on the market have been unnumbered, although in at least one case we are aware of, the copy did have a number. Fine. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted. See more items by ONDAATJE, Michael

27. Bold Type: Poems By Michael Ondaatje
Includes The Distance of a Shout and The Medieval Coast .

We lived on the medieval coast
south of warrior kingdoms
during the ancient age of the winds
as they drove all things before them.
Monks from the north came
down our streams floating that was
the year no one ate river fish.
There was no book of the fores,
no book of the sea, but these
are the places people died.
Handwriting occurred on waves, on leaves, the scripts of smoke, a sign on a bridge along the Mahaweli River. A gradual acceptance of this new language. A village of stone-cutters. A village of soothsayers. Men who burrow into the earth in search of gems. Circus in-laws who pyramid themselves into trees. Home life. A fear of distance along the southern coast. Every stone-cutter has his secret mark, angle of his chisel. In the village of soothsayers bones of a familiar animal guide interpretations. This wisdom extends no more than thirty miles. Excerpted from Handwriting Random House,

Like an archaeologist delving into the earth, unsure of what he'll find, Toronto author Michael Ondaatje immerses himself in the writing process. "I don't have a plan for a story when I sit down to write. I would get quite bored carrying it out," he said. He knows in time, all will become clear. "It's a discovery of a story when I write a book, a case of inching ahead on each page and discovering what's beyond in the darkness, beyond where you're writing." What he's unearthed in his gripping new book, Anil's Ghost , may surprise readers who know Ondaatje only from his previous work, the Booker Award-winning novel The English Patient. While The English Patient is dreamily set in an abandoned villa at the end of World War II, Anil's Ghost, which took seven years to write, takes place in the violent present. Set in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where Ondaatje was born, it tells the story of Anil, who like the author, is both a native of the country and a stranger to it. "I'm a Canadian citizen," said Ondaatje by telephone, his voice low and musical. "But I always want to feel at home in Sri Lanka. I'm a member of both countries."

Description
In the late 1970s Ondaatje returned to his native island of Sri Lanka. As he records his journey through the drug-like heat and intoxicating fragrances of that "pendant off the ear of India," Ondaatje simultaneously retraces the baroque mythology of his Dutch-Ceylonese family. An inspired travel narrative and family memoir by an exceptional writer.
