Webmaster's Note, 5/10/2007
Also commonly titled as Nineteen Eighty-Four

is possibly the definitive dystopian novel, set in a world beyond our imagining. A world where totalitarianism really is total, all power split into three roughly equal groupsEastasia, Eurasia, and Oceania. is set in Oceania, which includes the United Kingdom, where the story is set, known as Airstrip One. Winston Smith is a middle-aged, unhealthy character, based loosely on Orwell's own frail body, an underling of the ruling oligarchy, The Party. The Party has taken early 20th century totalitarianism to new depths, with each person subjected to 24 hour surveillance, where people's very thoughts are controlled to ensure purity of the oligarchical system in place. Figurehead of the system is the omnipresent and omnipotent Big Brother. But Winston believes there is another way.

kevincmurphy's Full Review: Orwell, George "Underneath the spreading chestnut tree, I sold you and you sold me."
If for some strange, hypothetical reason I was forced to choose one favorite writer or else suffer some violent, permanently disfiguring consequence, my choice would have to be George Orwell. His fiction (1984) is profound, his satire (Animal Farm) is keen, and his reporting (Homage to Catalonia, Down and Out in Paris and London) puts today's sages of journalism to shame.
Although 1984 remains one of my absolute favorite books (it's worth a read a year, just to see how we're doing), Orwell's deserves most credit for his essays. Never content to merely write about something, Orwell would immerse himself in his subjects, be it Burmese colonialism, poverty-stricken Parisians, English socialists, or the Spanish Civil War. In each case, Orwell forewent the life of Eric Blair to experience firsthand the passions and problems of his protagonists. Yet, in his compositions, he states his biases outright and takes pains never to declare himself absolutely objective. Orwell's journalistic devotion and sensibility are simply amazing. He spent his life delineating the differences between idea and fact, and his greatest novel attests to his understanding of the perils of this divide. Like no other, Orwell explored the human realities so often obscured by rhetoric or ideology.

Orwell, George
Orwell, George (1903-1950) a British writer and journalist who wrote books about politics and who also wrote novels. His real name was Eric Blair. His books Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four are both about political systems in which ordinary people have no power, and are completely controlled by the government. Both novels have had a great influence on the way people think about and write about politics, and political systems like those described in the books are sometimes called Orwellian. Orwell fought on the Republican left wing side in the Spanish Civil War. parent.curEntryId=30197; parent.prevEntryId=30196; parent.nextEntryId=30198; parent.gsSenseId=null; parent.giPhrId=null; Definition from the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Advanced Learner's Dictionary. A Few Words from the Editor of this Website
I created this website in hopes of re-introducing Orwell to a wider readership, who may only know him through his most famous novel Nineteen Eighty Four . Seeing how frequently Orwell is quoted out of context in political discussions on the Internet often to support spurious arguments and political causes which he might have condemned in his own lifetime I hope to create a resource for political philosophers of all stripe. Some Orwell scholars might claim that the title of this website is redundant (since nearly all of Orwell's writings were political) but I deal here with his political observations, not with an appreciation of his literary skills. The works presented here, although written immediately for his own time (specifically the World War II years, 1937-1945) are still in many ways analogous to our current age. I've taken the liberty of adding a few questions at the end of certain passages which may help the modern reader see their relevence to our own time. A few biographical notes about Orwell are in order: First, Orwell identified himself as a Democratic Socialist. Secondly, he died a relatively young man. Orwell was 47 years old when he succumbed to tuberculosis in January 1950. Given the astuteness of his observations on the World War II era, can we even begin to imagine what books he might have written had he lived through the Fifties? What would he have said about the Cold War? Sputnik? Television? The JFK assassination? The Beatles? Vietnam, Watergate, the moon landing? Perhaps, had he lived past the year 1984 itself, might he have commented on the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union? Unfortunately we'll never know.

    Biography of George Orwell (1903-1950)
Study Guides and Essays by George Orwell Animal Farm Burmese Days George Orwell George Orwell is the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair: essayist, novelist, literary critic, advocate and fighter for political change, and man of contradictions. Blair was born on June 25, 1903, in the Bengal region of Eastern India, which was a British territory. He was the son of Richard Walmesley Blair, a civil servant, and Ida Mabel Blair. Their only son was the middle child. He moved to England with his mother and sisters at the age of one. He displayed academic talent from a young age, so his mother took pains to ensure his attendance at a well-known boarding school called St. Cyprian’s. His family was neither poor nor wealthy, and Blair attended St. Cyprian’s on a scholarship. Blair excelled academically there but faced many hardships in its puritanical, cutthroat environment. In the autobiographical essay “Such, Such Were the Joys,” Blair/Orwell describes the social challenges he endured as a scholarship student among England’s wealthy elite. (These challenges would inform his satires of social stratification in his literary works, including Animal Farm .) In the essay, he describes his child self with much sympathy and feeling for the child's perspective. Such experiments in empathy prepared him to create Animal Farm's brilliantly naive narrator.

Introduction
George Orwell
is not only a major figure in twentieth -century literature but, more than fifty years after his death, he remains a best-selling author. Much of his work is still in print. In 1984 there were more than thirty new editions or reissues of his most famous novel, Nineteen Eighty Four , in at least sixteen languages.
From the early 1930s until his death in January 1950 Orwell earned an income as a novelist, editor, essayist, journalist, reviewer and broadcaster. He wrote novels, essays, contemporary social history, reviews, and even poetry. Eric Blair's and, later, George Orwell's writing life ranged from unpublished letters to his mother from his Eastbourne boarding school in 1911, to his first publication in 1914- a stirring, poetic call to arms, 'Awake! Young Men of England', to essays anthologised and eulogised a thousand times, such as 'Politics and the English Language', 'Shooting an Elephant', and 'The Prevention of Literature', to his best-known works, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four , the novel he completed as he was dying. His words have become part of the English language -'Newspeak'; 'Big Brother is watching you'; 'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others'. In 1946 Orwell wrote that 'the English language is in a bad way', and that, 'Probably it is better to put off using words as long as possible.' He offered a set of maxims on word use, though concluding, 'Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous'. Orwell cared passionately about his writing and taught himself to write well.

INTRODUCTION
Some years ago, Americans envisioned a future that would evolve predictably from the past as a type of extension of the familiar. With the sixties, however, our idyllic dreams were shattered and new visions began to form. , written in 1948 and published in 1949, was intended as a warning against totalitarian tendencies rather than as a prophetic work. Now that the year 1984 has passed, many may scoff at the warning, but those who do would be wise to look at the present a bit more closely. Currently, we have subliminal messages, two-way televisions, computer viruses threatening to endanger our much depended-upon information systems (with possible global impact), and countries all over the world committing atrocities against their own people. Recent political campaigns have shown us explicitly the extent to which propaganda has corrupted our own language. Politicians have perfected their own type of "Newspeak."
