Description
Thought Police. Big Brother. Orwellian. These words have entered our vocabulary because of George Orwell's classic dystopian novel, . The story of one man's nightmare odyssey as he pursues a forbidden love affair through a world ruled by warring states and a power structure that controls not only information but also individual thought and memory, is a prophetic, haunting tale.

At the same time, dystopian literature generally also constitutes a critique of existing social conditions or political systems, either through the critical examination of the utopian premises upon which those conditions and systems are based or through the imaginative extension of those conditions and systems into different contexts that more clearly reveal their flaws and contradictions (Booker, 1994, p. 3). George Orwell, "Politics and the English Language," 1946
Most people who bother with the matter at all would admit that the English language is in a bad way, but it is generally assumed that we cannot by conscious action do anything about it. Our civilization is decadent and our language so the argument runs must inevitably share in the general collapse. It follows that any struggle against the abuse of language is a sentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom cabs to aeroplanes. Underneath this lies the half-conscious belief that language is a natural growth and not an instrument which we shape for our own purposes. These five passages have not been picked out because they are especially bad I could have quoted far worse if I had chosen but because they illustrate various of the mental vices from which we now suffer. They are a little below the average, but are fairly representative examples. I number them so that i can refer back to them when necessary:
    1. I am not, indeed, sure whether it is not true to say that the Milton who once seemed not unlike a seventeenth-century Shelley had not become, out of an experience ever more bitter in each year, more alien [sic] to the founder of that Jesuit sect which nothing could induce him to tolerate.

October 25, 2010 by orwelldiaries The other night examined the crowds sheltering in Chancery Lane, Oxford Circus and Baker Street stations.  Not all Jews, but, I think, a higher proportion of Jews than one would normally see in a crowd of this size.  What is bad about Jews is that they are not only conspicuous, but go out of their way to make themselves so.  A fearful Jewish woman, a regular comic-paper cartoon of a Jewess, fought her way off the train at Oxford Circus, landing blows on anyone who stood in her way.  It took me back to old days on the Paris Métro. Surprised to find that D., who is distinctly Left in his views, is inclined to share the current feeling about the Jews.  He says that the Jews in business circles are turning pro-Hitler, or preparing to do so.  This sounds almost incredible, but according to D. they will always admire anyone who kicks them.  What I do feel is that any Jew, i.e. European Jew, would prefer Hitler’s kind of social system to ours, if it were not that he happens to persecute them.  Ditto with almost any Central European, e.g. the refugees.  They make use of England as a sanctuary, but they cannot help feeling the profoundest contempt for it.  You can see this in their eyes, even when they don’t say it outright.  The fact is that the insular outlook and the continental outlook are completely incompatible. According to F.[1], it is quite true that foreigners are more frightened than English people during the raids.  It is not their war, and therefore they have nothing to sustain them.  I think this might also account for the fact – I am virtually sure it is a fact, though one mustn’t mention it – that working-class people are more frightened than middle-class.

  • why 1984?-
Orwell finished his novel in 1948, so he just switched the 4 and the 8. what?
It’s an Utopia: It’ s a story about a perfect state. In Big Brothers point of view it is , but every real human being would say it’s a terrible state. So 1984 is a negative Utopia. Why did Orwell write it?
    • The story’s based on the Russian regime when Stalin ruled .Orwell was dissappointed in communism in Russia. He was shocked because Karel Marx beautifull ideas turned into such a cruel state. He lived during the World War and compared the leader Big Brother was with Hitler.
    To what purpose?
It was a warning not to let socialism turn into a totalitarian regime as in 1984. Where was Orwell wrong?

ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL, BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS.
When the animals take over the farm, they think it is the start of a better life. Their dreams is of a world where all animals are equal and all property is shared. But soon the pigs take control and one of them, Napoleon, becomes the leader of all the animals. One by one the principles of the revolution are abandoned, until the animals have even less freedom than before.

Animal Farm is a classic work by George Orwell and a noted piece of literature, which, of course, may help the reader to catapult the imagination beyond the horizons of dogmatic adherence to idealistic or Utopian thoughts. It however, represents human characteristics in an analogy of animal instincts, but it really gives insight into the Russian Revolution of 1917. It also mimics the doomsday of a precipitated change, brought by a modicum of bureaucratic class called as Bolsheviks. Submitted by Rahimullah Baig Hunzai.

Welcome to George Orwell's Animal Farm
    With lessons for today
    Overview
George Orwell's Animal Farm is a short, easily readable story with valuable lessons about how political and governmental organizations often work. Orwell wrote it as a parable about the Russian Revolution, as an example of how a revolutionary government could be worse than its monarchist predecessor, but it also could apply to many political organizations, labor unions, and the like. The key lesson is that the organization's bosses often manipulate the organization for their own benefit, and end up being as bad, if not worse, than the real or imaginary evils from which they are protecting their followers
    Synopsis
The farm animals who inhabit the Manor Farm are mistreated and abused by Farmer Jones. The animals rebel, expel Jones, and take over the farm, which they rename Animal Farm. Soon, however, the pigs (who represent the party bosses) begin to take special privileges for themselves, e.g. extra food. They enlist the farm's dogs as enforcers to put down any dissent, and they teach the sheep (rank and file) to speak the party line on demand. At first, this is, "Four legs good, two legs bad"- animals (four legs) are good, humans (exploiters) are bad.

    Orwell, George,
pseudonym of ERIC ARTHUR BLAIR (b. 1903, Mot i h a ri, Bengal, Indiad. Jan. 21, 1950, London), English novelist, essayist, and critic famous for his novels Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-four (1949), the latter a profound anti-Utopian novel that examines the dangers of totalitarian rule. Born Eric Arthur Blair, Orwell never entirely abandoned his original name, but his first book ( Down and Out in Paris and London ) appeared as the work of George Orwell (the surname he derived from the beautiful River Orwell in East Anglia). In time his nom de plume became so closely attached to him that few people but relatives knew his real name was Blair. The change in name corresponded to a profound shift in Orwell's life-style, in which he changed from a pillar of the British imperial establishment into a literary and political rebel. He was born in Bengal, into the class of sahibs. His father was a minor British official in the Indian civil service; his mother, of French extraction, was the daughter of an unsuccessful teak merchant in Burma. Their attitudes were those of the "landless gentry," as Orwell later called lower-middle-class people whose pretensions to social status had little relation to their income. Orwell was thus brought up in an atmosphere of impoverished snobbery. After returning with his parents to England, he was sent in 1911 to a preparatory boarding school on the Sussex coast, where he was distinguished among the other boys by his poverty and his intellectual brilliance. He grew up a morose, withdrawn, eccentric boy, and he was later to tell of the miseries of those years in his posthumously published autobiographical essay

    Introduction
Animal Farm by Geroge Orwell was first published in 1945 as a political allegory of the Russian Revolution, particularly directed at Stalin's Russia. Animal fables are an art form which have remained popular in Western literature. This novel is also an obvious allegory presenting a very nice balance between levels of meaning. One could characterise this novel as a perfect portrayal of a world where absolute power corrupts absolutely. This site includes a detailed analysis of Animal Farm characters, a summary of the book Animal Farm as well as a critical account of the novel's themes, structure, political backround and symbolism along with a detailed George Orwell biography.
