Metamorphosing the Metamorphoses
Hope Greenberg, Humanities Computing Specialist, University of Vermont The importance of such classical authors as Ovid to the art, music, and literature of western civilization is legendary, yet many are not familiar with the original works that have provided this inspiration. The University of Vermont's rare book department contains an extensive collection of illustrated works of Ovid. Included are several editions of engravings by the 17th century German artist, Johann Wilhelm Bauer, depicting 150 scenes from the Metamorphoses. Each scene has a brief description in both Latin and German. Some plates from a 1640 edition of the translation done by George Sandys are also available.

  • Born: 20 March 43 B.C. Birthplace: Sulmo (now Sulmona), Italy Died: 17 or 18 A.D. Best Known As: Roman author of Metamorphoses
Name at birth: Publius Ovidius Naso Ovid was one of the greatest poets of antiquity and the author of Metamorphoses , a masterpiece on Greek and Roman myths. What Virgil was to epic poetry, Ovid was to elegiac poetry, and his love poems and instructional works have firmly established him as one of the greatest influences on Western literature. His other works include Amores (3 volumes of love poems), Heroides (fictional letters from a woman to her lovers) and Ars Amatoria (an instructional poem on the art of love). Ovid was prolific and popular in his lifetime and highly regarded by the emperor Augustus , until he was banished from Rome under mysterious circumstances in 8 A.D. Despite public and private entreaties, Augustus (and later, Tiberius ) refused to forgive Ovid, who finished out his days in Tobis.

An introduction and commentary with discussion of myths and links to sources and influences in art and literature Larry A. Brown, Nashville, TN Introduction: Ovid's influence on Western art and literature cannot be exaggerated. The Metamorphoses is our best classical source of 250 myths. "The poem is the most comprehensive, creative mythological work that has come down to us from antiquity" (Galinsky). Based on its influence, "European literature and art would be poorer for the loss of the Metamorphoses than for the loss of Homer" (Hadas). Ovid was a major inspiration for Dante, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton (see bibliography on last page). If Virgil is Rome's greatest poet, Ovid is the most popular (even in his own time; Ovidian graffiti has been found on the walls of Pompeii). As one example of Ovid's influence on Western art and literature, read the famous story of Daedalus and Icarus in Book 8. Ovid's account is the earliest in extant literature, although the story is much older, found on 6th century vases. Christopher Marlowe alludes to this story in his tragedy of Dr. Faustus

Ovid
The history of Ovid Township and the village of Ovid are closely linked. Both were originally settled by people from Ovid, Seneca Falls County, N.Y., who purchased land sight unseen in what would be their new home. Early settlers of the village in July 1836 included Samuel Barker, Jabez Dennison - who was famous as a "slayer of bears," killing 19 - the Swarthouts and others. The village of Ovid might have been located at Clark's Corners, one mile east of its present location, if the landowners at that point had not been asking exorbitant prices for land. Mr. B.O. Williams had put up a sawmill in Middlebury Township on the railroad line and expected to have the depot assigned to the property, so he platted a town there. A.H. Frisbie, who operated a cooper shop, gave land to the railroad company - which accepted the gift and instead constructed a depot at that spot. The village was incorporated March 24, 1869. Many industries were located in Ovid in the late 1800s and early 1900s, including a cooperage, flour mill, lumber company, foundry, saw mill, tannery, as were numerous retail businesses and hotels.

Narcissus Clipart.com More Images zSB(3,3) This is from the Roman poet Ovid's story of Tiresias, in the Metamorphoses . The Metamorphoses , as its name implies, is the story of physical transformations.
In the Metamorphoses Ovid retells many of the Greek myths, especially those where, by the intervention of the gods, a mortal is turned into something less than human. In connection with Tiresias' adventures in gender-shifting , Tiresias had recently been blinded by Juno (known as Hera in Greek mythology). Jupiter (known as Zeus in Greek mythology) then made him a prophet, in which capacity he quickly gained a reputation for being infallible in his answers to questions about the future. Sometimes, however, the answers of Tiresias were as opaque as those of any other fortune-teller. Liriope, a naiad, became pregnant with the child of the river god Cephisus. When their child was born, Liriope named him Narcissus. When she asked the blind seer Tiresias if her son would live a long life. his answer was a qualified affirmative: Narcissus would live a long time

Ovidius (43 BC-17 AD) - OVID - in full Publius Ovidius Naso Roman poet, noted especially for his ARS AMATORIA and METAMORPHOSES. Ovid was the first major writer to grow up under the empire. He died far from home, in a desolate town by the Black Sea. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Ovidian stories were highly popular among artists, poets and in courts. In England the Metamorphoses was one of Chaucer's favorite books. I'm sorry for any fool who rates sleep a prime blessing

Night in, night out. What's sleep but cold death's
    reflection?

(from 'Elegy 9b' trans. by Peter Green) Publius Ovidius Naso was a member of the Roman knightly class. Ovid came from Sulmo in the territory of the Paeligni. His last name meant a 'nose', perhaps after some ancestor who had a big nose. Ovid's parents had destined him for a career in law. He studied rhetoric under Aurelius Fuscus and Porcius Latro and his education was completed in Athens, where he decided to become a poet, and rich and famous. With the poet Macer, Ovid travelled in Asia Minor and Sicily. In Rome he started to practise law as one of the judges who tried testamentary and sometimes criminal cases. Legal phraseology is seen later in his writing. Soon he decided that public life did not suit him. Ovid retired to devote himself entirely to writing. He was married three times; his only daughter was probably his second wife.
