Site Map Profile of Paul Barbara Kaspar Mossman Science Writer Physical chemist Paul Barbara says it proudly: “I'm an instrument jock.” As a Ph.D. student at Brown University in the mid-1970s, Barbara customized an NMR machine manufactured by the German company Bruker. “I taught myself electronics and was able to modify one of their instruments to work better, and they suggested that I work for the company,” he recalls. Barbara never took a class in electronics, but he learned how to look at a circuit board, draw the schematic, and figure out whether it made sense. For Barbara, Director of the Laboratory for Spectroscopic Imaging at the University of Texas (U.T.) at Austin, cutting-edge technical expertise is key. “It would be pretty hard to find influential science at the moment that isn't being done with state-of-the-art experimental tools,” he observes. His current laboratory in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at U.T. Austin spans two different groups, one devoted to materials science and the other to biological problems. The common thread that joins them is the use of combined microscopic and spectroscopic techniques that continually expand the frontier of the possible.
