I travel your body
like a forest."

When Zapata was driven into retreat and assassinated, the family lived in exile in the United States for a short time. After the return to Mexico, Paz studied law and literature at the National University, but refused to take his degree. However, from his youth Paz's ambition was to be a poet. Encouraged by Pablo Neruda , Paz started to write. From 1933 he published over 40 books. Biography
Octavio Paz was born in 1914 in Mexico City. On his father's side, his grandfather was a prominent liberal intellectual and one of the first authors to write a novel with an expressly Indian theme. Thanks to his grandfather's extensive library, Paz came into early contact with literature. Like his grandfather, his father was also an active political journalist who, together with other progressive intellectuals, joined the agrarian uprisings led by Emiliano Zapata.
Paz began to write at an early age, and in 1937, he travelled to Valencia, Spain, to participate in the Second International Congress of Anti-Fascist Writers. Upon his return to Mexico in 1938, he became one of the founders of the journal

Octavio Paz Octavio Paz Born in Mexico City in 1914; died in 1998. Essayist, poet, diplomat, and cultural historian, Octavio Paz is Mexico's foremost man of letters of the twentieth century. His most famous prose work, El laberinto de la soledad The Labyrinth of Solitude , 1961), explored the complexities of the Mexican psyche. In its unique combination of Indian and European sensibilities, Paz contended, the Mexican consciousness resists both the linguistic hegemony of the Spanish language and the cultural "otherness" of the United States. At the same time, Paz' other essays and poems have explored more universal and international issues of contemporary life, especially questions of psychic alienation and integration. Paz himself has rejected the dreamy lyricism of his earliest work, as in Luna silvestre Sylvan Moon , 1933). Although his early poems were heavily influenced by Surrealism and by Asian philosophy, the history of Paz poems is a track of restless formalism, ranging from tight imagistic perceptual moments, as in A la orilla del mundo On the Edge of the World , 1942) and La estacin violenta The Violent Season , 1958), to the broader inclusiveness of poems based on Aztec models, to even more humanly universal techniques and themes, as in Blanco White , 1967). In politics, Paz describes himself as a "disillusioned leftist." In the 1930s he fought on the side of the Spanish Republic. As a diplomat in the 1950s, he represented Mexico in several countries, including France, where he became friends with the Surrealists, especially Breton. Paz served also as ambassador to India, although he resigned that position in protest against the Tlatelolco Massacre (in which students were killed by government security forces, shortly before the opening of the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City). Since 1976 Paz has edited the influential magazine

FRAGMENT OF A TALK ON OCTAVIO PAZ, ANTHROPOLOGY AND THE FUTURE OF POETRY
MEXICAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE OF WASHINGTON D.C.
and THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, OCTOBER, 1999
" . . . now I believe our average poet, if it can survive,  is lucky to be something like a liver fluke progressing through the guts of a sheep."
I take as my text today a passage from Octavio's " Corriente Alterna."
If this is a correct reading, it has deep implications for the future of poetry. I will look at this question in my habitual persona as anthropologist. Be warned, gentle audience, that the social sciences do not often console. I offer a hypothesis in the form of a reduced model of an extremely complex situation: there is no time for more. The reason for a sociological approach? It is nonsense to talk about poetry, as most poets and critics today continue to do, without accounting for the socio-economic context of poetry production and reception.
Second: Those of us who care hear every day of underfed, poverty-stricken, culturally-deprived endangered and oppressed indigenous, "primitive," archaic or traditional peasant peoples, whether in the Americas the Amazon again; among the Maya of Central America; among our own Northern Native Americans or in other continents: in other words genocide and ethnocide. After managing two world wars of unparallelled proportions, our century continues on its merry way with the horrors of Guatemala, Tibet, Kurdistan, Ruanda, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, the Congo, Kosovo, Burma, East Timor. The truth is that, whether of the Left or Right politically, elites need land and will kill to get it.
