Titus Maccius Plautus 254 BC 184 BC , born at Sarsina Roman Umbria , today in Romagna , near Forlì ) was a comic playwright in the time of the Roman Republic Little is known of Plautus' life; even his birth and death dates are uncertain. The traditional belief is that he went to Rome when he was very young and became a stage assistant. Eventually his talent as an actor was discovered, and he took the names of Maccius, a clown character in popular farces, and Plautus, a term meaning "flat-footed." Tradition also says that he eventually made enough money to go into the shipping business, but the venture collapsed. He then is said to have worked as a manual laborer and studied Greek drama in his spare time. His studies eventually resulted in his plays, which were first produced between c. 205 BC and 184 BC . He wrote approximately 130 plays, of which 21 survive. Plautus' comedies , which are among the earliest surviving intact works in Latin literature , are mostly adaptations of Greek models for a Roman audience and are often based on the works of the Greek playwright Menander . Plautus' most typical character is the clever slave , who manipulates his master, reversing the master-slave dynamic expected of such relationships in the Roman world. Most characters in Plautus' plays are

Plautus (254?–184 B.C.), a Roman playwright. His full name was Titus Maccius Plautus. His Latin comedies are modeled on the Greek New Comedy of Menander. They usually deal with romantic love plagued by comic complications, and feature such stock characters as the cunning and dishonest servant and the boasting soldier. Nicholas Udall, Ben Jonson, Shakespeare, Molière, and other dramatists borrowed extensively from Plautus. He is credited with writing 20 complete plays and parts of another. Plautus was born in Sarsina, Italy. He presumably went to Rome as a young man. There he became the most popular playwright of his time. Related Topics Lucius Apuleius Marcus Terentius Varro Juvenal

Plautus - Definition
Titus Maccius Plautus was a comic playwright of the Roman Republic . The years of his life are uncertain, but his plays were first produced between about and 184 BCE . Twenty-one plays survive. Plautus' comedies , which are the earliest surviving intact works in Latin literature , are all adaptations of Greek models for a Roman audience. The characters remain in Greek settings, or perhaps a Greek setting imagined by a Roman. His most typical character is the clever slave who manipulates his master, undermining some of our conceptions of normal social relationships in the Roman world. Plautus' work gave ideas to many playwrights afterwards, such as William Shakespeare Molière Lessing and others. I. Introduction: Early Roman Literary Drama (derived from the Greeks) The turning point in Roman drama came in 240 BCE , when a Greek-speaking slave living in Rome, Livius Andronicus , translated Homer's Odyssey into Latin. As it turned out, this was a watershed experience that inaugurated the Romans into a century-long fascination with Hellenic culture. In more ways than one, that moment in history constitutes the inception of Latin literature. But who was this Livius Andronicus and why were his adaptations of Greek literature so significant in the evolution of Roman civilization? A freed slave, we are told, Livius Andronicus served in the house of the Livii, a noble family of Rome, from whom he took his name. As such, he probably came to Rome when he was still a child and, no doubt, grew up bilingual, putting him in an excellent position to bridge Greek and Latin civilization. Besides The Odyssey , his adaptations included several Greek tragedies, mostly from originals by Sophocles and Euripides ( Ajax Andromeda Danae Tereus ), and also comedies adapted from unknown sources (
