  • ASIN: Book Description When William Matthews died, the day after his fifty-fifth birthday, America lost one of its most important poets, one whose humor and wit were balanced by deep emotion, whose off-the-cuff inventiveness belied the acuity of his verse. Drawing from his eleven collections and including twenty-three previously unpublished poems, Search Party is the essential compilation of this beloved poet's work. Edited by his son, Sebastian Matthews, and William Matthews's friend and fellow poet Stanley Plumly (who also introduces the book), Search Party is an excellent introduction to the poet and his glistening riffs on twentieth-century topics from basketball to food to jazz.

Stanley Plumly was born to Herman and Esther Plumly on May 23, 1939, in Barnesville, Ohio. Following Stanley's birth, the family moved from farm work to carpentry jobs and back to farm work in Virginia and Ohio. Plumly graduated from Wilmington College, a small work-study school in Ohio, in 1962. While he was in college, his writing talents were recognized and encouraged by the playwright-poet-teacher Joel Climenhaga. Plumly received his M.A. from Ohio University in 1968 and did course work toward a Ph.D. at the same school. The writer's father, who died at the age of fifty-six of a heart attack brought on by his chronic alcoholism, dominates the poet's work: "I can hardly think of a poem I've written that at some point in its history did not implicate, or figure, my father" ( Iowa Review , Fall 1973). His mother also figures prominently as the silent, helpless witness of her husband's self-destruction.

    Description
As the art of effective and persuasive language use, rhetoric requires proficiency in grammar (or words and their structural relationships) and composition (or the arrangement of grammatical elements). In this course, we study grammar and composition to a rhetorical end; we will aim to learn better communication by studying the small pieces that serve great masterpieces. Therefore, we will read much and write much in order to better grasp rhetoric, grammar, and composition. This class focuses on the building blocks of craft.

    Stanley Plumly
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Stanley Plumly (born 1939 Barnesville, Ohio ) is an American poet , who is professor of English and director of University of Maryland, College Park 's creative writing program. "This poet hymns unlikely things, finding beauty and grace where they were overlooked, so that a frightful contraption like an iron lung can become a miraculous vehicle for ' out-of-the-body travel ', the major metaphor as well as the tile ot Plumly's finest collection (1977). In the same way, wildflowers we may have scarely noticed, like meadow-rue and peppergrass, are shown to have the same kind of unlikely and stirring beauty. Stirring, perhaps, because unlikely, rescued from a modest oblivion to enhance our sense of life. Stanley Plumly grew up in Ohio and Virginia and was educated at Wilmington College in Ohio and at Ohio University. He taught for a number of years at Ohio University, where he helped found the Ohio Review, and he has been a visiting writer at a number of other institutions, including Iowa, Princeton, Columbia, and the University of Washington. At present, he teaches in the writing program at the University of Maryland."

Along with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley , he was one of the key figures in the second generation of the Romantic movement, despite the fact that his work had been in publication for only four years before his death. During his life, his poems were not generally well received by critics; however, his reputation grew and he held significant posthumous influence on many later poets, including Alfred Tennyson and Wilfred Owen The poetry of Keats is characterised by sensual imagery, most notably in the series of odes . Today his poems and letters are considered as among the most popular and analysed in English literature.

John Keats was born on 31 October 1795 to Thomas and Frances Jennings Keats. He was the eldest of their four surviving children, George (1797–1841), Thomas (1799–1818), and Frances Mary "Fanny" (1803–89). A son was also lost in infancy. John was born in central London, although there is no clear evidence of the exact location. His father at first worked as an ostler at the stables attached to the Swan and Hoop inn, an establishment Thomas later managed and where the growing family would live for some years. poetry Issue Date: 3-Dec-2004 Abstract: The themes in this collection of poems center on location, memory, and identity. Many of the poems are travel poems that reside in a specific geographic and temporal locations but which, in the course of the poems, expand outward to capture the emotional landscape projected by the speaker. The poems also focus on familial and romantic relationships, while exploring the attempt to navigate an identity that is defined, or reinforced, by connectivity. A large number of poems investigate the relationship of memory to identity, not only examining memories for their story content, but also probing the change in relationships when an individual loses his or her capability to rememberhow that loss of memory affects those around him or her as well as perceptions of self, identity, and the way in which we connect.
