Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) , American poet, critic, short story writer, and author of such macabre works as “The Fall of the House of Usher” (1840); I looked upon the scene before me - upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain - upon the bleak walls - upon the vacant eye-like windows - upon a few rank sedges - and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees - with an utter depression of soul which I can compare to no earthly sensation more properly than to the after-dream of the reveller upon opium - the bitter lapse into everyday life - the hideous dropping off of the veil. There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart - an unredeemed dreariness of thought which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime. What was it - I paused to think - what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher? Contributing greatly to the genres of horror and science fiction, Poe is now considered the father of the modern detective story and highly lauded as a poet.

    Summary

The next day the statements of the witnesses werein the paper:
Pauline Dubourg , washerwoman, has worked for three years for the lady. She said that mother and daughter were getting along very well and thought that the lady was a fortune-teller.
Pierre Morreau, tobacco-dealer, has worked for the lady for four years. He provided the lady tobacco and sniff. He lived his whole life in the neighbourhood, the lady and her daughter lived there for six years and seldom someone went in there. Next there were 6 people with almost identical depositions. They all went into the house and heard two voices. One voice was a surly voice of a French man. The other voice was shrill, but it was identified as six different nationals. Spanish, French, German, English, Russian and Italian. None of the witnesses spoke the language, which they thought it was. Jules Mignaud
