Porges's father, Israel Podgursky, was born in 1885 in a small town near the Russia-Poland border and had American connections through his two brothers—Mortimer, a lawyer in Chicago, and Dave, who worked for the Chicago Board of Education—and two sisters, Lilian and Rose, neither of whom married. Mortimer had two daughters, Lois and June. On migrating to the U.S. he adopted the name of a relative, Leo Porges, with a business in Chicago. Of this, Arthur wrote, "I've never known if he ... picked the name out of the air, ... or had some ties to the Jewish Porges network." Now James Porges, his father, who worked at the

"When the ruum was six feet away, he saw gleaming finger-hooks
flick from warty knobs, and a hollow, sting-like probe,
dripping greenish liquid, poised snakily between them."
(from "The Ruum," 1953) Arthur Porges was already a teacher with a college mathematics degree when WWII came along and he was drafted almost immediately in January of 1942. Luckily, he was needed stateside as an instructor for the military. He didn't write fiction until after the war and was a natural short form writer who amassed an estimated 250 to 300 stories, mostly in the mystery field. His science fiction and fantasy output was approximately 90 vignettes and short stories, never exceeding the latter length and seemed written to rid himself of an itch that he couldn't quite scratch. Over the last 30 years or so, Science Fiction burned itself out on short story collections. These books were perceived by publishers as break-even or money losers . . . no movies, no sequels, no TV (after the demise of Twilight Zone type programs). So Porges stories went uncollected until recently when, mostly through fan efforts, The Mirror and Other Strange Reflections Porges stories are still being found and identified as computer's do their thing . . . he also wrote a large body of articles and essays, many of which were published while he lived at Pacific Grove, CA, in The Monterey Herald, which is the only newspaper known to have published an obituary.

(as Frank Patton), "Mahaffey's Mystery" [The Mahaffey in the title is fan and editor Bea Mahaffey who worked for Raymond Palmer]. Almost all the characters in the story are actual people in the science fiction field. Much of the action takes place at the 7th World Science Fiction Convention (Cinvention I) at the Hotel Metropole in Cincinnati, Ohio, 1949. The narrator of the story is Charles R. Tanner, honorary chairman of the convention. Tanner is trying to fake a murder in order to get publicity for the convention. This runs into problems as an alien entity tries to use the situation to gain permanent possession of Bea Mahaffey's body. This dastardly attempt is foiled by Tanner and the noble fen. Other Worlds 1:3 March 1950 (pp.122-138) Palmer, Stuart, "Mertorious Windows" Reuben Dearik creates total immersion entertainment stories. However, his boss, Jonah N. Powell hates anything "artsy" and has given Reuben a deadline to come up with something more commercial or be fired. Reuben re-invents the soap opera, but leaves a trap in it. Once the term "science fiction" is uttered in the total immersion, the viewers will be dumped into an alien world where there will need all their wits to survive. The Moon in Science Fiction Mankind's dreams of space exploration focused first on our closest celestial neighbor, the Moon. Jules Verne and H.G. Wells both wrote classic stories on such travels. The following is a bibliography of science fiction (and some fantasy) novels and short stories in which Earth's satellite has a major or at least significant role. Some of the citations are incomplete, but this will be remedied as time permits. I have had a great deal of help with this bibliography. First a heartfelt thanks to subscribers of SF-Lovers and to the many visitors to this site for their comments and suggestions. And a note of special appreciation to Spike MacPhee someone whose extensive knowledge of the SF genre has been of incalculable value in compiling this work. The Moon in Science Fiction is a dynamic list of sources that will continue to grow. I invite comments, corrections and additions. Look for to find recent publications or items which have been recently added or updated. Titles that are highlighted will take you to Amazon.com
