Pythagoras of Samos (ca. 560-ca. 480 BC)

Greek philosopher and mathematician who founded the mystic Pythagorean cult. The cult he founded was devoted to the study of numbers, which the Pythagoreans saw as concrete, material objects. They studied figurate numbers defining them as triangular numbers pentagonal numbers hexagonal numbers etc., based on the patterns that numbers of regularly spaced dots formed (Boyer 1968, p. 59-61). Pythagoras's biographer Proclus ascribed two specific mathematical discoveries to Pythagoras: construction of the regular solids (known today as the Platonic solids ), and the theory of proportionals. Pythagoras also investigated the ratios of lengths corresponding to musical harmonies, undertook studies in number theory, and developed methods of geometric proof. Among the results attributed to Pythagoras and his followers is the proof that the number Pythagoras's constant ) is irrational usually attributed to Hippasus Pythagoras developed a modern theory of vision much simpler than that of Plato . This theory maintained that light is emitted from luminous bodies, can suffer reflections, and causes the sensation of sight when it enters the eyes. He was the first Greek to realize that the morning star and evening star were both the planet

Pythagoras in Samos: Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos in 570 BC. This island lies slightly off the western coast of Asia Minor. His mother was native of Samos and his father was a merchant from Tyre. He studied with the priest of Memphis, who was well-known for his wisdom. After Memphis, he studied at the temples of Tyre and Byblos in Phoenicia. It is most likely in Egypt where he came up with his geometric principles that would lead to his famous theorems. The evidence of his Egyptian inspirations is called the Berlin Papyrus. Links Samos Home About Samos Samos Pictures Samos Map ... Samos Reviews Pythagoras did not only think up mathematical principles during his life. He also founded a religious society. His society had very strict rules of conduct. The inner circle of the society was called Mathmetikoi. As a member of the society, you had to live at the school, have no personal possessions and had to follow a vegetarian diet. They did allow students from other areas to attend the school. These students, called Akousmatics, were permitted to eat meat and own a few personal things. As a whole, the members of this society were known as Pythagoreans and had a very structured life of religious teaching, common meals, exercise, reading and philosophical study. They had to sing to the Greek god Apollo on a regular basis. They believed that they could use the lyre to cure illnesses of the soul and body. One had to do poetry recitations before and after sleep since they believed this exercise could help improve human memory.

Pythagoras of Samos
(569-475 BC) Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos, Greece in 569 BC. He was a Greek religious leader and a philosopher who made developments in astronomy, mathematics, and music theories. He moved to Croton (a city in southern Italy) and started a religious and philosophical school there. He had many followers called the Pythagoreans. Pythagoras did much more than just discover what is now referred to as the Pythagorean Theorem. Pythagoras and his followers contributed to music, astronomy and mathematics. Pythagoras believed in secrecy and communalism, so distinguishing his work from the work of his followers is almost impossible. When joining Pythagoras's group, you had to remain silent for five years before you could contribute to the group. Some of their discoveries were right, and some were proven wrong in time. The most important idea of the Pythagoreans was that most things could be understood through math, which was important to math and science development.

Pythagoras of Samos
Life Pythagoras (c. 580-500 BC) is one of the most important and enigmatic Presocratic figures. He was born in Samos and traveled for many years in Egypt and the Orient. Due to Samos’ tyrannical rule, Pythagoras migrated to southern Italy about 532 BC and established the Thiasos , a religious and philosophical academy-brotherhood at Croton with ethical and political aims. Pythagoras was influenced by oriental thought and especially oriental mysticism. He wrote nothing but most of his radical thinking survived in the writings of his students Philolaus, Archytas and Alcmaeon. Pythagoras’ ideas was also influential in Plato and later Platonism. Important stories about his life and activities, but dubious most of them, are presented in the Neoplatonic biographies of Porphyry and Iamblichus. Philosophy Pythagoras was a great mathematician. He seems to discover (1) the incommensurability of the side and diagonal of a square, and (2) the Pythagorean theorem for right triangles. On this basis, for Pythagoras cosmos is ordered according to hidden mathematical relations. The power of number has a functional significance, both ontological and cosmological, in the objective world. Number is the wisest and eternal principle in the natural world. It can be observed in the harmony of the world and the musical harmony of the heavenly spheres. Music is the best manifestation of the mathematical cosmos

Pythagoras of Samos
January 27, 2008 3:50 am Samiotis Samos History Who was Pythagoras of Samos? Pythagoras of Samos though is best known for for the Pythagorean theorem which bears his name. Most of us remember it barly from school or have forgotten it all along. As a young man, he left his native city for Croton, Calabria, in Southern Italy, to escape the tyrannical government of Polycrates. According to Iamblichus, Thales, impressed with his abilities, advised Pythagoras to head to Memphis in southern Egypt and study with the priests there who were renowned for their wisdom. He also was discipled in the temples of Tyre and Byblos in Phoenicia . It may have been in Egypt where he learned some geometric principles which eventually inspired his formulation of the Pythagorean Theorem that is now called by his name. The religious side of Pythagors of Samos We get some insight into the lives of the Pythagoreans, the rleigion of the followers of Pythagoras, when we realize that they believed in the transmigration of souls (the belief that on death we return as another) and that they had many taboos. Their rules where strict; amongst other practices they had:

Pythagoras of Samos
Not much is known about Pythagoras and nothing about his life and work can be proven. Probably, he lived around 500 BC. He may have studied Babylonian and Egyptian mathematics while traveling in those areas. He was particularly interested in geometry and number theory on which he also did some important research. The Pythagorean theorem and the Pythagorean Number Triplets are named after him. We know, however, quite a lot about the Pythagorean schools. Their students thought about philosophical questions like reincarnation and studied sciences, especially mathematics and astronomy. (Astronomy was part of mathematics back then). They made many new discoveries on these subjects. The Pythagoreans were also politically active. One of their most famous members was the philosopher Plato.
It is remarkable that women too were admitted. A couple of hundred years later, the wide spread attitude about women was that they are backwards in physical and mental strength and if you educate them, they only get chattery to top it off. It was a philosophical and religious school with many followers. Like a pyramid, with Pythagoras at the head, the society had an inner circle of followers known as mathematikoi (priests of mathematics). These mathematikoi lived permanently with the Society, were allowed no personal possessions and were vegetarians. They received training only from by Pythagoras, following very strict rules. The next layer of the society was called the akousmatics. They were further away from Pythagoras in many ways. They lived in their own houses, and only came to the Society during the day. Pythagoras and his inner circle believed that souls migrated after death into the bodies of other beings, believing it possible an animal could contain a human soul. They saw eating animals as cannibalism. The outer circle was not confined to a vegetarian diet. The society contained both men and women.

    The Ancient Greeks and Nature
It should be recalled that the foundations of the classical physical sciences, mathematics and geometries can be traced back to the ancient Greek philsophers and sages whose recorded wisdoms and writings were rediscovered after the Dark Ages, and upon whose philosophies and sciences the emerging western civilisation sought to rebuild knowledge "anew". This article examines the translated historical literature specifically concerning the Pythagoras, one of the earliest of the ancient Greeks, by way of very brief summarisation of the extensive researched work of the classicist WKC Guthrie. The following series of notes are drawn from my review of the book:

I have made no attempt to make the following account coherent at this stage, except for a brief index, for its purpose is largely reference material for further research and development concerning my own understanding of nature as outlined in such articles as:

[Page 132] Pythagoras, son of Mnesarchos, a native of Samos, left his fatherland to escape the tyranny of Polykrates (533/2 or 529/8 B.C.). He made his home for many years in Kroton in southern Italy, where his political views gained control in the city. At length he and his followers were banished by an opposing party, and he died at Metapontum. Many stories are told of his travels into Egypt and more widely, but there is no evidence on which the stories can be accepted. He was a mystic thinker and religious reformer quite as much as a philosopher, but there is no reason for denying that the doctrines of the school originated with him. Of his disciples, Archytas, in southern Italy, and Philolaos and Lysis, at Thebes, are the best known. It is the doctrine of the school, not the teaching of Pythagoras himself, which is known to us through the writings of Aristotle. Literature: :-On Pythagoras: Krische

"Through Vibration comes Motion Through Motion comes Color Through Color comes Tone"
He was a Greek philosopher who was responsible for important developments in the history of mathematics, astronomy, and the theory of music. He founded the Pythagorean Brotherhood and formulated principles that influenced the thoughts of Plato and Aristotle. The influence of Pythagoras is so widespread, and coupled with the fact that no writings of Pythagoras exist today, this short article will attempt to guide the reader through the life of this most remarkable teacher.
The beliefs that Pythagoras held were:
    1) that at its deepest level, reality is mathematical in nature
    2) that philosophy can be used for spiritual purification
    3) that the Soul can rise to union with the Divine
    4) that certain symbols have a mystical significance
    5) that all brothers of the Order should observe strict loyalty and secrecy
Pythagoras was the first to call the heavens a universe and the earth round. That the Soul was immortal, and that it changes from one body to another. The Pythagorean Brotherhood was one of the worlds earliest unpriestly cooperative scientific societies, if not the first, and that its members invented the multiplication table, and raised important scientific problems which were solved 15 centuries later.

    Pythagoras of Samos
    Pythagoras of Samos
Pythagoras is considered to be one of the most important mathematicians in the western world. His important theorem, the Pythagorean Theorem, states that square of the hypotenuse of a right angle triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. This simple, elegant and concise theorem is the underlying theorem which bears many other theorems, be it in the world of algebra, calculus, and most importantly, geometry. Pythagoras of Samos was born in Samos, Ionian island. He was born in 569 B.C and died in about 475 B.C. It is quite unfortunate, that unlike other Greek mathematicians and philosophists whose writings are readily available, little of Pythagoras can be found. The reason for this is due to the secrecy policy that he believed in. During his life, Pythagoras used to lead a mysterious society which is half religious and half scientific. We do, however, have some accounts of his life, written by other authors who were interested in his life, who attributed divine powers to him. Some believe that these findings are merely legends, and some believe that they are real.
