Each section is devoted to one of three species of trout: brook, brown, and rainbow. Descriptions are given on where to find each fish, everything you need to know about live bait, what lures work best, and how to use them. This is the definitive guide for catching trout, mixing anecdote with practical advice and having a very good time with it all. Customer Reviews: great practical and enjoyable book Just happened to pick this book up out of the blue. Little did I know I was buying what is my favourite fishing book, but some very relevant information on some of my local fishing areas.

He wrote his early novels while working as the bass player for the group Joe Hall and the Continental Drift and as the guitar accompanist for Cathy Stewart, a Canadian singer who was popular at the time. One of his successful novels, Whale Music , was called "the greatest rock'n'roll novel ever written" by Penthouse magazine. elf-styled ''masters of the impossible'' and mega-grossing princes of the Las Vegas strip, reluctant gay icons and patriarchs to a brood of 55 white tigers Siegfried and Roy are real-life characters so strange that if they hadn't invented themselves, no sane novelist would have dared do it for them. But in ''The Spirit Cabinet,'' his eighth book, the Canadian novelist Paul Quarrington takes hold of these flamboyant only-in-Americans and bends them to his own even stranger purposes. The stars of his far-fetched but entertaining novel are Jurgen and Rudolfo. Rudolfo is a vain, profane animal trainer and obsessive bodybuilder with a thing for skintight rhinestone-studded jumpsuits in alarming colors. His partner, dimwitted Jurgen, is the guy with the card tricks and illusions, a man of few words and many grunts. Together they live in uneasy conjugality in a huge desert mansion crawling with bush babies, Barbary doves, aracaris and a shy albino leopard named Samson. While sympathetic to his subjects, Quarrington isn't interested in the real life of magicians any more than in the real, increasingly slick and sanitized Las Vegas. There's a brief evocation of the Abraxas, the hotel where Jurgen and Rudolfo perform, and a few perfunctory nods to the vast desolation of the surrounding landscape. But Quarrington's Sin City is less a real spot on the map than a fairy-tale desert outpost with a Las Vegas theme, one curiously depopulated of all but Jurgen and Rudolfo's ragged circle of freaks and geeks.

    Pages at the Plaza
For a lively discussion on the merits and dangers of developing Alberta's oil sands, come to the Plaza Theatre for a debate between Ezra Levant and Andrew Nikiforuk. Levant, author of "Ethical Oil: The Case for Canada's Oil Sands" will argue that the ethical cost of buying cheap oil from corrupt regimes is far too high. He feels that oil from a democratic state is an asset to world peace and stability. In contrast, Nikiforuk argues in his book, "Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent," that the environmental cost of developing Canada's oil sands will irreparably harm our environment. Nikiforuk would like an immediate moratorium on oil sands development. The event takes place on Sunday, November 7 at 11:00AM (doors open at 10:30). General admission is $5.00. Lunch is also available, prepared by Red Tree Catering. Admission plus lunch is $15.00; admission plus Levant's hardcover book is $30.00; and admission plus lunch plus Levant's book is $40.00.

Review of The Spirit Cabinet from January Magazine.
    http://www.januarymagazine.com/fiction/spiritcab.html
The Spirit Cabinet by Paul Quarrington Published by Random House Canada 304 pages, 1999 Buy it online Magic in the Box Reviewed by Jay Currie Whether or not Paul Quarrington has written a brilliant novel about tricks, I will leave to people who know magic. He has revealed some of the art of tricks how to make a girl or a tiger disappear is a matter of mirrors and very small spaces. And he has been criticized for giving away a few secrets. But this is not the point of The Spirit Cabinet.
What Quarrington has done is imagine that there is real magic underlying the world of illusion. Think about that idea. Consider what the sleight of hand distraction masters of Las Vegas would do if all of a sudden, actual, inexplicable magic was discovered.
Quarrington has assembled a cast of characters filled with the oddities which represent the backstage of Las Vegas. The tinsel, the bullshitters, the losers and the marks sitting out in the audience. With a bit of exaggeration and hyperbole, Quarrington captures an imaginary Sigfried and Roy and the gang of other magicians who populate Vegas. Their job is to provide fun and games for the post-literate: two shows a night, 300 nights a year.
In a world where the extremely stupid are taken by the slightly smarter, magic wins. The good folks out in the $75 seats want to be fooled and Vegas magicians are there to fool 'em.

    Description
After a long, slow climb out of the strip clubs of Europe, Jurgen and Rudolfo have hit the big time in Las Vegas, headlining a magic act as slick as their own buffed and usually half-naked bodies. Rudolfo is content orchestrating the spectacle and attempting to twin his soul with Jurgen's. But Jurgen hungers for moreand finds it in a mysterious collection of magician's paraphernalia that once belonged to Harry Houdini. With the knowledge he finds there, and his own faith in the unknown, Jurgen becomes the miracle worker of the Las Vegas strip. "Darkly comic, deeply sad, and always ironic" (Library Journal), The Spirit Cabinet takes dead aim at the place within us that yearns for miracles. "It is not a book about magicians and their pursuit of magic," wrote Alan Beaton in The National Post; "it is a book about human beings, and their pursuit of faith."
    Customer Reviews
A spirited novel The Spirit Cabinet is a novel about magic and Las Vegas. At least that's the impression you get from the cover-the upper half is a dove cupped in a quick hand, perhaps ready to vanish. The bottom is a slice of the Las Vegas Strip. And the quote on the cover (this is the paperback) starts out by saying the book is "entirely magical." And it's right.

Random House Canada, 341 pp. And now, thanks to research conducted for his most recent book, The Spirit Cabinet , Quarrington can add amateur magician to the list. His first novel in five years, The Spirit Cabinet is the tale of three magicians working their art in Las Vegas (where nothing is what it seems, of course). Preston the Magnificent, Jr. – or "the Adequate," as he prefers – hails from a long line of illusionists, but is increasingly out of place in a world that rates glitz ’n’ glamour over substance. On the other hand, the up-and-rising Rudolfo and Jurgen – a European double act, buffed, oiled and extremely slick – are the embodiment of G ’n’ G, their stage show a celebration of the outrageous and the impossible. THE BOY ON THE BACK OF THE TURTLE
    by Paul Quarrington
Greystone Books, 242 pp. Subtitled "Seeking God, Quince Marmalade and the Fabled Albatross on Darwin's Islands," Paul Quarrington's latest is heavy on the former and light on the latter. A mid-life memoir arises out of this travelogue describing the journey of Quarrington, his father and his daughter as they journey to the Galapagos Islands. Various upsets do little to diminish what is a good trip. Unfortunately, good trips never make very exciting reading since good usually means uneventful. Luckily things are buoyed by Paul's inner journey. Visiting the islands where Charles Darwin conceived his theory of evolution puts Quarrington in the mind to question his casual theism. There follows an entertaining summation of the theological section of Philosophy 201 as the various volleys of the tennis game that is the question "Is there a god?" are described. This book doesn't come any closer to answering that question than anyone else has (the book has two possible endings). but has fun doing it and doesn't take itself terribly seriously in the process. Quarrington does an amazing job of researching his topics (the text is followed by a five page bibliography in microfont) and presenting them in a highly conversational manner. The biggest journey in the book is historical. Throughout their history the Galapagos have been home to more than just an amazingly diverse flora and fauna. Those seeking the ultimate in escape have also flown there. Pirates, explorers, the rich and the bizarre have all called these islands home at one time or another and their stories find a retelling here.
