In 1959, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature "for his lyrical poetry, which with classical fire expresses the tragic experience of life in our own times." Salvatore Quasimodo's works fall roughly into two periods, divided by World War II. His early poems were difficult with their metaphysical and complex imagery. Mientras estudiaba por s� mismo las lenguas latina y griega, ejerci� trabajos tan distintos como dependiente, contable o dise�ador t�cnico. En 1929 se traslad� a Florencia, donde su cu�ado E. Vittorini lo introdujo en los c�rculos literarios y le present� a E. Montale, que enseguida intuy� sus dotes. All� empez� a colaborar en la revista Solaria y a publicar sus primeras colecciones de poes�a. Compiuti gli studi medi in Sicilia, nel 1919 si trasferisce a Roma, dove si iscrive al Politecnico. Interrompe presto gli studi per problemi economisti e comincia a lavorare (vari impieghi: disegnatore tecnico, commesso, ecc.); intanto studia le lingue classiche da autodidatta. Nel 1926 si impiega presso il Genio Civile e si trasferisce a Reggio Calabria. Nel 1929 s� trasferisce a Firenze, dove Elio Vittorini, suo cognato, lo introduce negli ambienti letterari. L'anno dopo pubblica Acque e terre. Nel 1931 si trasferisce a Imperia dove conosce Sbarbaro, nel 1934 a Milano. Del 1936 � la raccolta Erato e Ap�llion. Nel 1938 si licenzia dal Genio civile e comincia a lavorare nell'editoria. Collabora a �Letteratura� e a �Corrente�, per le cui edizioni pubblica nel 1940 le traduzioni dei Lirici, l'opera sua oggi considerata pi� importante, che subito suscita vivaci clamori. Per chiara fama l'anno dopo � nominato professore di letteratura italiana al Conservatorio di Milano, cattedra che terr� fino alla morte. Gli anni successivi, che lo vedono collaborare a vari quotidiani e periodici, sono scanditi essenzialmente dall'uscita delle altre raccolte poetiche: Ed � subito sera (1942, raccoglie la precedente produzione); vari volumi di traduzioni (dai Vangeli, da Catullo, da Omero); La vita non � sogno (1949); Il falso e vero verde (1956); La terra impareggiabile (1958); Dare e avere (1966).
