  • ASIN: Book Description This novel, although not as well-known as Radcliffe's later works, is thought to represent her work at its best. More than just a work of suspense and mystery, it is a work of ideasa discussion of the contrasts between hedonistic doctrines and a system of education and values. Download Description He approached, and perceived the Gothic remains of an abbey: it stood on a kind of rude lawn, overshadowed by high and spreading trees, which seemed coeval with the building, and diffused a romantic gloom around. The greater part of the pile appeared to be sinking into ruins, and that, which had withstood the ravages of time, shewed the remaining features of the fabric more awful in decay. The lofty battlements, thickly enwreathed with ivy, were half demolished, and become the residence of birds of prey. Huge fragments of the eastern tower, which was almost demolished, lay scattered amid the high grass, that waved slowly to the breeze.

In particular, note how she establishes place and direction: On the pleasant banks of the Garonne, in the province of Gascony, stood, in the year 1584, the chateau of Monsieur St. Aubert. From its windows were seen the pastoral landscapes of Guienne and Gascony, stretching along the river, gay with luxuriant woods and vines, and plantations of olives. Radcliffe, Ann
    9 July 1764 - 7 February 1823
Hugely popular Gothic novelist of the 1790s (and beyond), Radcliffe crafted a brand of explained supernaturalism (which owed not a little to the early novels of Charlotte Smith ) that struck a chord with British readers during the anxious 1790s. Her blend of moralism, aesthetics, and drama became definitive for what was often taken as a more genteel strain of Gothic fiction during the Romantic period, although that characterization of her work has come in for critical scrutiny in recent years, owing in no small measure to the groundbreaking biographical work of Rictor Norton (see below). Hers is one of the most famous early names of the Gothic tradition; The Mysteries of Udolpho is an essential Gothic text, though many readers prefer The Italian and the oft-overlooked The Romance of the Forest . Radcliffe suddenly quit writing despite ongoing fame and significant financial reward; her later reclusiveness, which may well be attributed to a nervous breakdown, and her acute lifelong sense of propriety, decorum, and reserve have left us with no known portraits or likenesses.

    Biographical note
English author, and pioneer of the gothic novel. She was born Ann Ward in Holborn, London, England. She married William Radcliffe, an editor for the English Chronicle, at Bath in 1788. To amuse herself, she began to write fiction, an avocation her husband encouraged. She published The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne in 1789. This set the tone for the majority of her work, which tended to involve innocent, but heroic young women who find themselves in gloomy, mysterious castles ruled by even more mysterious barons with dark pasts. Her works were extremely popular, especially with respectably sheltered young women who were starved for something a bit more exciting than needlepoint. Her works included The Sicilian Romance The Romance of the Forest The Mysteries of Udolpho [1794], and The Italian The success of The Romance of the Forest established Radcliffe as the leading exponent of the historical Gothic romance. Her later novels met with even greater attention, and produced many imitators, and famously, Jane Austen 's burlesque of The Mysteries of Udolpho in Northanger Abbey , as well as influencing the works of Sir Walter Scott and Mary Wollstonecraft More ...

Although Radcliffe is often considered one of the founders of horror fiction, her works are unusual. Although her characters often encounter menacing and mysterious phenomena in the depths of dungeons at midnight, there is never any actual presence of the supernatural to be found in her work. Radcliffe's works exhibit a sort of realism , a psychological rather than fantastical horror that have made them one of the enduring classics of the early Romantic era, both for lovers of horror fiction and for general readers alike. As a genre writer, Radcliffe's reputation has never been as strong as some of her contemporaries, such as The Bronte sisters or Jane Austen . Austen herself wrote a novel-length parody of Radcliffe, and she has often been relegated to the sidelines of interest by critics studying the early Romantic period. Nonetheless, in recent years a resurgence in interest in Radcliffe's works as literary artifacts has begun to develop. In her time, Radcliffe was admired by some of the brightest minds of her generation for her ability to tap into the powerfully sensational themes of Romanticism through her scenes of horror, including Coleridge and Byron . Today, Radcliffe is beginning to be recognized as an important influence on
