Jump to: navigation search Radcliffe, Ann (1764-1823): English Writer. Ann Radcliffe was one of the first writers of gothic fiction and one of the most popular novelists of late eighteenth-century England. Radcliffe's father was a London haberdasher who became a manager for the Wedgwood-Bentley showroom at Bath. Her mother came from a family connected to the Unitarian movement of Rational Dissent. Her husband, William, was a radical journalist and editor of The English Chronicle Radcliffe published five novels during her lifetime. The first two, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne (1789) and A Sicilian Romance (1790), were published anonymously and received slight attention. Her third, The Romance of the Forest (1791), was highly praised by contemporary reviewers for its poetic descriptions. Radcliffe's next two novels, The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794) and The Italian (1797), were and continue to be widely read. They were so frequently imitated in Europe that reviewers often spoke of the "Radcliffe school." Udolpho had been praised for its poetic descriptions of landscapes and its imaginative energy.

WARD (b. July 9, 1764, London, Eng.d. Feb. 7, 1823, London), the most representative of English Gothic novelists. She stands apart in her ability to infuse scenes of terror and suspense with an aura of romantic sensibility. Radcliffe's father was in trade, and the family lived in well-to-do gentility. In 1787, at the age of 23, she married William Radcliffe, a journalist who encouraged her literary pursuits. Mrs. Radcliffe led a retired life and never visited the countries where the fearful happenings in her novels took place. Her only journey abroad, to Holland and Germany, was made in 1794 after most of her books were written. The journey was described in her A Journey Made in the Summer of 1794 Her first novels, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne (1789) and A Sicilian Romance (1790) were published anonymously. She achieved fame with her third novel, The Romance of the Forest (1791), a tale of 17th-century France. Her next work, The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794), by which she became the most popular novelist in England, tells how the orphaned Emily St. Aubert is subjected to cruelties by guardians, threatened with the loss of her fortune, and imprisoned in castles but is finally freed and united with her lover. Strange and fearful events take place in the haunted atmosphere of the solitary castle of Udolpho, set high in the dark and majestic Apennines.

Ann ( née Ward) Radcliffe (1764-1823) , English author, wrote The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794), a classic example of Gothic Romance fiction. The heroine, Emily St Aubert, is imprisoned in an Apennines fortress by a sadistic villain, Count Montoni, and at the mercy of her imagination; fate sits on these dark battlements, and frowns,
And, as the portals open to receive me,
Her voice, in sullen echoes through the courts,
Tells of a nameless deed.
Ann Radcliffe was born on 9 July 1764 in London, England. The only child of William Ward and Anne Oates Ward, it is said that she was quite shy, and reclusive in her later years. At the age of twenty-two she married William Radcliffe, lawyer, and then editor and owner of The English Chronicle . The couple had no children. Set in Middle Ages Scotland

BIOGRAPHY
Ann Radcliffe, or Lady Mowlson, established the first scholarship at Harvard College in 1643- the sum of one hundred pounds to aid "some poore Scholar". She was born in London in 1576, married Thomas Mowlson in 1600, and had two children, both of whom died young. Her husband died in 1658, leaving her half of his estate which she managed so well that its value was increased considerably. She was a shrewd, independent and active woman who lent money to Parliament and espoused the Puritan cause. She died in 1661. As Ann Radcliffe was the first woman donor to Harvard College, it was suggested by President Eliot that her name be taken by the as yet unnamed Harvard "Annex." In 1894, The Society for the Collegiate Instruction of Women became Radcliffe College, adopting her coat of arms as its official seal.
