Walter Raleigh (c.1552 - 1618)
Sir Walter Raleigh   Raleigh was an adventurer, courtier to Elizabeth I, navigator, author and poet. M Walter Raleigh (also spelled Ralegh) was born into a well-connected gentry family at Hayes Barton in Devon in around 1552. He attended Oxford University for a time, fought with the Huguenots in France and later studied law in London. In 1578, Raleigh sailed to America with explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert, his half brother. This expedition may have stimulated his plan to found a colony there. In 1585, he sponsored the first English colony in America on Roanoke Island (now North Carolina). The colony failed and another attempt at colonisation also failed in 1587. Raleigh has been credited with bringing potatoes and tobacco back to Britain, although both of these were already known via the Spanish. Raleigh did help to make smoking popular at court. Raleigh first came to the attention of Elizabeth I in 1580, when he went to Ireland to help suppress an uprising in Munster. He soon became a favourite of the queen, and was knighted and appointed captain of the Queen's Guard (1587). He became a member of parliament in 1584 and received extensive estates in Ireland.

Sir Walter Raleigh
Walter Raleigh was born in Devon, the son of a gentleman. He was educated at Oriel College, Oxford and the Middle Temple. As a soldier and explorer of the New World, he won the favour of Queen Elizabeth I, receiving a knighthood in 1584, but fell from grace following his love affair and marriage to one of her attendants. After the Queen's death he fared even worse, as jealous nobles conspired against him to bring about his downfall and subsequent execution on charges of treason. Much of Raleigh's work was written during his long imprisonment in the Tower of London and his most famous poems include All the World's a Stage Cynthia, the Lady of the Sea , in praise of Queen Elizabeth I, The Lie , and The Pilgrimage . His prose works include accounts of his voyages and expeditions and an unfinished History of the World The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd

Sir Walter Raleigh.
His background.
He was born in 1552, during a time when his father leased Hayes Barton from the Duke family of Otterton. He was half brother to Sir Humphrey and Sir John Gilbert, from his mother's first marriage. He had a brother, Carew, and sister, Margaret. The spelling used in those days was rather erratic and thus "Raleigh" is just one of the (over 40) ways in which his surname was written. He used numerous of these spellings, with "Rawleigh", "Ralegh" and "Rawley" being more often used than the currently accepted version. His name was pronounced "raw lie" and it is said he is never known to have used the modern "Raleigh" spelling. He is known to have attended church in East Budleigh. The nearby sea-side town of Budleigh Salterton is the setting for the painting "The boyhood of Raleigh" by Millais (on show at the Tate Gallery, although from May 20th. to September 30th., 2000 it will be in an exhibition about Raleigh at the

Sir Walter Raleigh Biography
Explorer Scalawag
Sir Walter Raleigh was one of the grand scalawags of the Elizabethan Age. He made a name for himself fighting the Irish at Munster; later he was introduced at court and became a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I . Known for his wit and womanizing, Raleigh was in and out of Elizabeth's favor. (According to a famous legend he once laid his plush and expensive cloak over a mud puddle so that the Queen's feet would not be dirtied; the legend has long been disputed, but it may actually be true.) He also organized expeditions to the new world, popularized tobacco, and found time to write poetry on the side. Raleigh was not a favorite of Elizabeth's successor, James I , who kept Sir Walter imprisoned in the Tower of London for years and finally had him beheaded in 1618. Extra credit : After Raleigh's execution, his head was embalmed and returned to his wife... Some sources say on the day he was beheaded Raleigh was granted a last smoke of tobacco establishing the tradition of giving a prisoner a last cigarette before execution. Other leading figures of Raleigh's era include author William Shakespeare , sea captain Sir Francis Drake and astronomer Johannes Kepler ... Other beheaded English citizens include Anne Boleyn Lady Jane Grey and Sir Thomas More Raleigh joins John the Baptist in the loop Heads With a Life of Their Own

SIR WALTER RALEIGH
Renaissance Man
INTRODUCTION
Sir Walter Raleigh was perhaps the most colorful personality of the Renaissance.
BACKGROUND
Sir Walter Raleigh was born in Hayes, Devonshire. This was the beginning of an incredible life. Sir Walter Raleigh later attended Oxford but did not finish there. Instead he studied law in England. He also did not finish there. Instead he went on an expedition of piracy with his brother Sir Humprey Gilhar in 1578. In 1580, Raleigh became the captain of the army of Ireland and suppressed a rebellion.
Ten years later, in 1590, Raleigh was at the height of his power. By this time he was known as one of the dashing personalities of England. He had been knighted and was one of the queen's favorites. He was so popular with the queen he was granted 12,000 acres of land in the new world.
A short time later his power dropped severely. He lost the queen's favor by marrying one of her maids of honor. In 1603 things were even worse. The queen died and the new king charged Raleigh with treason. After the king locked him in the London Tower for twelve years, he finally convinced the king to let him free by promising him the gold of Spain. The king had ordered him not to engage the Spanish in war but Raleigh's son attacked a village and was killed. Upon return to England Raleigh was executed for disobeying orders. In 1618 Sir Walter Raleigh was beheaded but he faced his fate bravely. He joked with his executioner and even gave the signal for the axe to fall... After all he was a Renaissance man.
