Alternatively Professor Walter Raleigh was a scholar and author circa 1900. Sir Walter Raleigh October 29 ) is famed as a writer, poet, spy, and explorer. N.B.: Many alternate spellings of his surname exist, including Rawley Ralegh , and Rawleigh ; although "Raleigh" appears most commonly today, he himself used that spelling only once. His most consistent preferrence was for "Ralegh". The city of Raleigh North Carolina takes its name from Sir Walter.
Walter Raleigh was born at Hayes Barton, which lies on the edge of Woodbury Common close to the village of East Budleigh, in Devon England . He was the half brother of Sir Humphrey Gilbert and Adrian Gilbert . Raleigh's family had a fundamentally Protestant religious orientation and experienced a number of near escapes during the reign of the Catholic queen Mary I of England (1553 - 1558). During childhood, Raleigh developed a hatred of

How did Walter Ralegh become a courtier? Ralegh was the son of a Devonshire squire but his family, particularly on his mother's side, had some important connections. One of these was Humphrey Gilbert, an explorer and adventurer. He accompanied Ralegh on his first trip to the West Indies on a mission to attack Spanish ships laden with gold. Ralegh's family were fervent Protestants and believed that Catholic Spain was England's greatest enemy. Ralegh was ambitious and knew that to gain the notice of the Queen he had to prove himself as a soldier and explorer. For this reason he also went to Ireland (where his family had some land) and quelled a rebellion there. These exploits, and his prowess as a poet, enabled him to join the inner circle at Court.
Is the story of the cloak true?
The famous event of the cloak is believed to have occurred at Greenwich Palace. Soon after his return from Ireland, Ralegh, dressed very flamboyantly as usual, was walking with the Queen and other courtiers. When they came to a muddy puddle Ralegh spread out his plush velvet cloak so that the Queen would not have to step in the dirt. Whether it was true or not, Ralegh was rewarded 'with many suits', the lease of Durham House on the Strand and many other privileges.
Did Walter Ralegh fight against the Spanish Armada?

Sir Walter Raleigh
The Discovery of Guiana, 1595
Introductory Note Sir Walter Raleigh may be taken as the great typical figure of the age of Elizabeth. Courtier and statesman, soldier and sailor, scientist and man of letters, he engaged in almost all the main lines of public activity in his time, and was distinguished in them all. His father was a Devonshire gentleman of property, connected with many of the distinguished families of the south of England. Walter was born about 1552 and was educated at Oxford. He first saw military service in the Huguenot army in France in 1569, and in 1578 engaged, with his half-brother, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, in the first of his expeditions against the Spaniards. After some service in Ireland, he attracted the attention of the Queen, and rapidly rose to the perilous position of her chief favorite. With her approval, he fitted out two expeditions for the colonization of Virginia, neither of which did his royal mistress permit him to lead in person, and neither of which succeeded in establishing a permanent settlement. After about six years of high favor, Raleigh found his position at court endangered by the rivalry of Essex, and in 1592, on returning from convoying a squadron he had fitted out against the Spanish, he was thrown into the Tower by the orders of the Queen, who had discovered an intrigue between him and one of her ladies whom he subsequently married. He was ultimately released, engaged in various naval exploits, and in 1594 sailed for South America on the voyage described in the following narrative.

Sir Walter 'the Unfortunate' Raleigh
"O eloquent, just and mightie Death, whom none could advise,
thou hast perswaded."

Sir Walter Raleigh
The History of the World
SIR WALTER RALEIGH
TO LADY ELIZABETH RALEIGH
"I am but dust..."
At his execution in 1618 in the Tower of London, Sir Walter Raleigh asked to see the axe that was to behead him and said, "This is a sharp Medicine, but it is a Physician for all Diseases." As was common at the time, his head was embalmed and presented to his wife. She apparently carried it with her at all times until she died 29 years later at the age of 82. You shall now receive (my deare wife) my last words in these last lines. My love I send you that you may keep it when I am dead, and my councell that you may remember it when I am no more. I would not by my will present you with sorrowes (dear Besse) let them go to the grave with me and be buried in the dust. And seeing that it is not Gods will that I should see you any more in this life, beare it patiently, and with a heart like thy selfe. First, I send you all the thankes which my heart can conceive, or my words can rehearse for your many travailes, and care taken for me, which though they have not taken effect as you wished, yet my debt to you is not the lesse: but I pay it I never shall in this world.
