"What I didn't know at the time was that this police station was investigating a child abduction, which was very similar to what I was describing; eventually, seven kids were taken and killed. These cops see a lunatic come into the station with this spurious story about writing a novel and they immediately cast me as a suspect." Being Ian Rankin has become hard work. Between dashing about on international publicity tours, speaking before crime writers' associations and struggling with a three-part BBC-TV cop drama (set in a fictional fishing community north of Aberdeen, Scotland), the author finds less and less free time nowadays to devote to the continuing adventures of Edinburgh Detective Inspector John Rebus. However, it's his Rebus books the newest of which, Set In Darkness , is due out in Great Britain in February that have brought Rankin, at just under 40 years of age, extraordinary acclaim. On both sides of the Atlantic.

RANKIN, Ian Knots and Crosses (London), (Orion), (2007). The 20th anniversary edition of his second book, and the first to feature Detective Sergeant John Rebus, one of the most complex, engaging and these days popular characters in detective fiction: Rankin's first books, including the first Rebus novels, were only modestly successful commercially. Eventually the series gained in popularity to the point that they reportedly accounted for 10% of all sales of crime novels in Great Britain, selling a half million copies or more for each title and being bestsellers immediately upon publication. This edition contains a new introduction by the author, as well as a section at the end of the book of material that was deleted from the original novel. One of 1500 numbered copies signed by the author . Fine in a fine slipcase. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted. Ian Rankin: Dead Souls
Gary Marshall Most police thrillers conform to a strict blueprint - a misunderstood outsider who's willing to risk his career and his life to get his man, villains who are inevitably the personification of evil and of course a bevvy of beautiful women with a truncheon fixation. Everything is presented in stark black and white comic-book shades of good and evil. Ian Rankin's characters, on the other hand, inhabit a much more realistic world where the lines between good and evil are distinctly blurred. Set in Edinburgh - though an Edinburgh which owes little to its tourist-friendly image - the novel moves between low-lifes and bright young things, luxury flats and sink estates, from fear and hatred to grief and loss. The actions of Rankin's central character, Inspector John Rebus, are dictated as much by prejudice, bitterness and knee-jerk reactions as they are by logic or police procedure. Not so much misunderstood as held in open contempt by his colleagues, Rebus doesn't bend the rules if he can jump up and down on them in big clumpy boots instead. The "dead souls" of the title seem to follow Rebus wherever he goes - the apparent suicide of a colleague, the return to Scotland of deported murderers, the disappearance of an ex-girlfriend's son, memories and emotional baggage. As with previous Rankin novels the crime genre allows the story to cover subjects which could have been torn from today's newspapers - abuse of children in care, the deliberate neglect of "sink" estates, the rehabilitation of convicted paedophiles into the community and the fate of missing persons or "mispers".

Book Summary of Exit Music
It's late autumn in Edinburgh and late autumn in the career of Detective Inspector John Rebus. As he tries to tie up some loose ends before retirement, a murder case intrudes. A dissident Russian poet has been found dead in what looks like a mugging gone wrong. By apparent coincidence a high-level delegation of Russian businessmen is in town, keen to bring business to Scotland. The politicians and bankers who run Edinburgh are determined that the case should be closed quickly and clinically. But the further they dig, the more Rebus and his colleague DS Siobhan Clarke become convinced that they are dealing with something more than a random attack - especially after a particularly nasty second killing. Meantime, a brutal and premeditated assault on local gangster 'Big Ger' Cafferty sees Rebus in the frame. Has the Inspector taken a step too far in tying up those loose ends? Only a few days shy of the end to his long, inglorious career, will Rebus even make it that far?
