Description
When a former soldier and recluse murders two 17-year-old students at a posh Edinburgh boarding school, Inspector John Rebus immediately suspects there is more to the case than meets the eye. Given his contempt for authority, his tendency to pursue investigative avenues of his own choosing, and his habitually ornery manner, it's a wonder that John Rebus hasn't been booted unceremoniously from his job as an Edinburgh cop. He certainly tempts that fate again in

An Interview with Ian Rankin
Ian Rankin is one of the best crime writers who ever got into the bloody business by accident. On his way to a doctorate in Scottish literature at the University of Edinburgh, he began exploring his dark, baffling city by writing about a grim detective inspector named John Rebus in his debut novel, . Rebus is an unapologetic hard-drinking cop with sharp instincts but a tenacious knack for getting himself in trouble. Through the course of sixteen Rebus novels, Rankin has painted a detailed portrait of a European city at the end of the twentieth century, showing the depths of its humanity by detailing its crime and its effect on its populace. He has earned the Gold Dagger for fiction for Resurrection Men In his latest book, Fleshmarket Close , Inspector Rebus is drawn into the sordid world of illegal housing schemes. An asylum-seeker has been murdered. Nearby, his partner Siobhan is investigating the matter of two skeletons found buried beneath a concrete floor in Fleshmarket Close. , a travel guide for fans of the series, and write new introductions to each book in the series, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2007.

Book Review
Like Edinburgh inspector John Rebus, the resurrection men of the title are treading on thin icethey've all been sent to a short course at the Scottish Police College because they've failed in some way, generally "an issue with authority." Rebus has been known to have issues of that nature before, which only boosts his credibility with the other cops in attendance, suspected by their bosses of being on the wrong side of the fence, on the take, or even guilty of murder on several previous occasions. The dour Inspector's agenda aims to bring the higher-ups proof of the so-called Wild Bunch's nefarious activities; in the process, his own conduct in the old case he and his college classmates must rework and revisit comes under scrutiny. A solid police procedural whose protagonist, the hero of 14 other titles in this... Fleshmarket Alley

Mass Market Paperback
From Publishers Weekly The Edinburgh of Insp. John Rebus has more than its share of violent crimes involving drugs and gangs, but there's always another layer of institutional vice and corruption. As Rebus says, "[W]e spend most of our time chasing something called 'the underworld,' but it's the overworld we should really be keeping an eye on." In Edgar-winner Rankin's 15th novel to feature the moody, dogged detective (after 2004's A Question of Blood), a Kurdish refugee's death in a dreary housing estate leads Rebus into a labyrinthine plot involving a modern-day version of the slave trade. As has been the trend in recent Rebus novels, colleague Siobhan Clarke assumes a more central role, this time investigating the disappearance of the sister of a rape victim who later committed suicide. These mysteries begin to intertwine when...

BORN TO BE REBUS
Dec 8 2005 By Rick Fulton Ken Stott as Rebus He's played Hitler and two cops, but Ken Stott is now the people's choice - and the writer's favourite - as Edinburgh's most famous detective KEN Stott has been in some dark places in shows such as Messiah, The Vice and Uncle Adolf, but he admits the hardest thing he's ever had to do was be a Hibs fan in his new role as Rebus. The 50-year-old Edinburgh actor takes over from John Hannah as writer Ian Rankin's DI John Rebus. Gruesome murders Ken can handle - he's seen some of television's worst - but becoming a Hibs fan and running on to their pitch at Easter Road was almost more than he could stomach. Ken laughed: "It's the hardest thing I've done on screen - I'm a big Hearts fan. But, in truth, having the chance to run on the pitch, which I did in this series, even when it wasn't my team's home ground, is real boys' own stuff and I got a big thrill from it." The two new feature-length films, to be screened next month, are The Falls, in which a killer leaves distinctive clues by the butchered bodies of his victims, and Fleshmarket Close, involving murder in the immigrant population of Edinburgh's Knoxland Estate.
