Rawlings, Marjorie Kinnan
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, (August 8,1896- December 14, 1953) is an American-born author who is best known for her novel, The Yearling . The book, published in 1939, won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction and was eventually made into a major-motion film. Many of Rawling¢s works are based on her years of living in rural and remote Florida. Rawlings was born in Washington, DC in 1896 and received an English degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1918. She married a fellow writer, Charles Rawlings, and the couple moved to Rochester, NY and both wrote for local newspapers. They later bought an orange grove in Hawthorne, Florida, where Rawlings became enthralled with the wilderness and people living in the area. Her writing flourished around this time. In 1933, her first novel, South Moon Under , was published. This was also the year she and her husband divorced. Her next published, and less popular novel, Golden Apples , came out in 1935. Her best known novel

  • ASIN: Amazon.com Book Description In this classic story of the Baxter family of inland Florida and their wild, hard, satisfying life, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings has written one of the great novels of our times. A rich and varied story - tender in its understanding of boyhood, crowded with the excitement of the backwoods hunt, with vivid descriptions of the primitive, beautiful hammock country, with humor and earthy philosophy - The Yearling is a novel for readers of all tastes and ages. Its glowing picture of life that is far and refreshingly removed from modern patterns of living becomes universal in its revelation of simple courageous people and the abiding beliefs they live by. Winner of Pulitzer Prize in 1938, The Yearling was made available the following year in a special edition illustrated by the distinguished American artist, N.C. Wyeth. The original paintings have been re-photographed and new plates made for this handsome volume. Customer Reviews: the yearling received my books in excellent condition as described and in a reasonable amount of time The Yearling The Yearling is one of the most emotionally provocative classics I have ever had the fortune to come across. Being a 12 year old myself, I empathize greatly with our young hero, Jody Baxter, who resides in a dense florida scrub, leading an agrarian lifestyle with his father and mother. Coming of age in the savage, untamed heart of late ninteenth century Florida is not an easy task, and Jody will need to mature swiftly if he wants to survive in the wild enviorment that is his own. Luckily, many things aid him, mostly indirectly, such as his pet fawn, that he cares for with such a passion, that in the end, a very difficult and demanding choice is required of him.

    December 16, 1953 OBITUARY
Mrs. Rawlings, 57, Novelist, Is Dead
By THE NEW YORK TIMES ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla., Dec. 15 (UP)Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, whose story of a Florida backwoods boy won the Pulitzer Prize in 1939, died of a cerebral hemorrhage last night in Flagler Hospital. She was taken ill yesterday morning. The death of the 57-year-old novelist cut short her work on a new projectthe life of Ellen Glasgow, the Virginia novelist. Mrs. Rawlings had planned to devote five years of research and writing to it. Surviving is her second husband, Martin Baskin, to whom, she was marred in 1941. The funeral service will be held here at 11 A.M. tomorrow at the Craig Funeral Home. Mrs. Rawlings will be buried near her Cross Creek farm near Gainesville. Failure for Ten Years For more than ten years, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings tried hard to become a fiction writerwith complete failure. She made up her mind to give up. "Then I thought, well, just one more," she told a New York Times reporter years later. That short story "sold like a shot, and I have had no trouble since," Mrs. Rawlings said. "No trouble" was a modest understatement for a success that included a Pulitzer Prize novel and two others in the final consideration for the award, two honorary college degrees and a fortune in book club royalties and movie rights.

This article was written by Kay Harwell Fernandez Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Cross Creek belongs to the wind and the rain, to the sun and the seasons, to the cosmic secrecy of seed, and beyond all, to time. So ends the book, Cross Creek, written by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Cross Creek still belongs to time. Thanks to the University of Florida Foundation, the efforts of supporters and the Florida Parks Department, the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Historic Site is available to thousands of visitors each year. Accompanied by her husband, Charles (Chuck) Rawlings, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings first set her eyes upon Cross Creek in 1928. She was fascinated with its remoteness, wildness, simplicity of life and its Florida Crackers. She immediately felt a sense of place. It touched all her senses. This was home. After returning north to put a close to her life there, Chuck's two brothers (who lived in North Central Florida) found the perfect spot in Cross Creek, so named because it lay between the Lochloosa Lake and Orange Lake. The acquisition also included two cows, two mules, 150 chicken coops, two chicken brooders, a planter, reaper, cultivators, sweeps and an old Ford truck on its last leg. They had hoped to live off the citrus groves. That never came to fruition, but Marjorie's writing did.
