Book Description Hailed by Patricia Cornwell as "unequivocally the most brilliant mystery writer of our time, " Ruth Rendell now delivers an all-new collection of long- and short-story mysteries. As always with Rendell, these stories of mystery and wrongdoing shine their light into the dark places of the human psyche. Customer Reviews: Rendell's Masterpiece The novelette included in this collection, "The Strawberry Tree," may well be Rendell's masterpiece, the single work that stands above all her other many fine novels and stories. It's a work of exquisite craftsmanship and deep psychological depth. I gasped at one point, laughed at another, and ended in tears. A British television adaptation (with the same title; you can find details at imbd.com) is also excellent. Short stories that don't feel like a compromise.

Ruth Rendell - A Sight for Sore Eyes (1999)
A Sight for Sore Eyes is one of those crime novels that are also literature. It's a grim contemporary fairytale about corrupted beauty; a twisted yet beautiful love-story about two damaged people gradually moving together, with catastrophic consequences. I had read several of Rendell's books before I came to this several years ago, but this was the first one I fell I love with. Normally, whenever anyone says "I couldn't put it down," that's just a stock sentence to convey some sense of the quality of the book; they don't actually mean that they physically couldn't put the book down. True cases are very very rare indeed, and they have little to do with physicality. Sometimes, though, books like this do come along, which cause you suddenly to realize it's five in the morning and you should have slept long ago. In these cases, you and the book have actually melded, briefly, into a whole. The book is an extension of the self, so remarkable as to almost seem forged in the mind, to seem, perhaps, to be only created as you are reading it. This is such a book. A book that is so gripping, whose universe is so totally convincing that you, in a sense, become it, to the ignorance of all other external stimuli.

Shortly after Lizzie Cromwell returns from the dead, another young woman disappears, just as a convicted paedophile is released back into the community. Local residents are up in arms, and even prepared to take the law into their own hands...
Chief Inspector Wexford is not only concerned very personally with the effects of violence and prejudice, but is involved with a new programme to help the victims of domestic violence. His daughter, Sylvia, whose marriage is in difficulties, has also come to work nearby in a refuge for battered women.
After those early disappearances, two far more serious crimes are committed which will affect the lives and attitudes of police and public alike.
First British Edition Hutchinson (1998) A Sight for Sore Eyes
    See Review by Margaret Murphy

Lying in bed he thought about Francine as she had been, seated in front of his mirror, swathed in stiff silk, her reflected face looking gravely back at her real face. She must easily be the most beautiful girl in the world. A sight for sore eyes. Alfred Chance had once used that expression and it had stuck in his mind. About an object, though, not a person. It meant that looking at beauty took away pain and hurt and made you better. Francine made him better and his eyes were sore when they couldn't feast on her.’

The Blood Doctor by Barbara Vine (Crown, $25.00, V) ISBN-1-400-4504-5 Blood, bloody - the first word is a noun, the second an adjective often used as invective rather than description. Both uses are appropriate for Barbara Vine’s latest novel. This time Dame Ruth Rendell aka Barbara Vine takes us behind the scenes of the House of Lords when that august body is voting on whether or not to continue as it has for centuries. Martin Nanther, hereditary peer known for his well written biographies, intends to research his great-grandfather whom Queen Victoria knighted for work with her hemophiliac children. Henry Nanther was fascinated with blood diseases and set out to become an expert on them. As Martin reads his relative’s letters, notebooks and scientific works, the Victorian physician emerges. More questions arise than are answered and Martin is frustrated but plods on seeking more information. He learns of distant cousins he never knew who can fill the many gaps in the family tree but questions remain resolved. At the same time, his second wife is desperate for a child and hopes he might come upon some reason to explain her inability to carry a child even though he has a son from his former marriage. Martin is indifferent to her desperation and even shows jealousy when she does conceive. The unborn baby preoccupies her time and he resents it.

    Biography
British writer of crime and psychological thrillers; an award-winner on both sides of the Atlantic. A former journalist, she has built a name as one of the best and most successful of the crime novelists. Her novel "A Demon in my View" was awarded the gold Dagger Award by the British Crime Writers Ass'n. Her work also includes "A Sleeping Life," "The Best Way to Die," and "A New Lease on Death." In 1992 she published her 15th Wexford mystery, the first in four years, "Kissing the Gunner's Daughter," bringing her book total to 48. The only child of two teachers, Rendell grew up in a bickering world that she shut out, withdrawing into the world of imagination that holds both enchantment and the dark recesses of the psyche. She married Don Rendell; one son; they separated in 1972, divorced in 1975 and remarried in 1977, living in a pink farmhouse in the English countryside. She writes at times under the name Barbara Vine. Link to Wikipedia biography
