Aspects of the same monster
The Dragon and the Unicorn Kenneth Rexroth was born in 1905 in Indiana, into a family that had a long line of freethinkers, feminists, abolitionists, socialists and anarchists. His father used to drink whisky with Eugene Debs, the socialist leader. He had an enlightened upbringing but then had the misfortune of being orphaned at the age of 12. Most of his adolescence was spent in Chicago, where he worked as a newspaper reporter and was involved in running a jazz tea shop. Here he came in contact with the bohemian world of musicians, poets, writers, artists, hobos, revolutionaries and outsiders.
Rexroth was almost completely self-educated, with only five years of formal schooling. He read avidly, began to write poetry, paint abstract paintings, worked in avant-garde theatre and taught himself several languages. Like the European writer Jean Malaquais , he took to the road in his late teens, He ranged, he roamed, he rambled. He worked at all sorts of jobs, sometimes as a cowboy cook, sometimes as a wrangler, and in farm and forestry jobs. He worked as a toothbrush maker and as a peddler of pamphlets on diet. He also worked his way over to Paris and back on ships. There he met many important radical artists, including many surrealists. The anarchist

Having revived the radio variety program with A Prairie Home Companion Garrison Keillor turned to broadcasting poetry in the daily short feature The Writer's Almanac . In any given week, probably more people hear him read poems than attend poetry readings and slams. That's good because his taste is excellent. But then, his criteria are golden. For him, a poem is good if it's memorable, recitable, and accessible. The almost-unheard-of-for-poetry sales of Good Poems (2002) suggest that many endorse his taste and criteria, and the sequel to that success gives them no reason to change their minds. As before, the range of poets represented is broad contemporarily (the majority are alive or very recently deceased) and historically (sixteenth to twenty-first century), though not internationally, for, with one... Poems from the Greek Anthology
Kenneth Rexroth
Oct 1999
(Paperback) - Expanded Ed.
Book Description "The first translation from the Greek that I ever did was the apple orchard of Sappho in my fifteenth year. It left me so excited with accomplishment that I couldn't sleep well for nights. Since that time, on the freight trains of my youthful years of wandering, in starlit camps on desert and mountain ranges, in snow-covered cabins, on shipboard, in bed, in the bath, in love, in time of loneliness and despair, in jail, while employed as an attendant of the insane, and on many other jobs and in many other places, the Anthology and the lyric poets of Greece have been my constant companions." Rexroth, Kenneth, beat generation , although he disdained their lack of discipline. Self-educated, he taught himself several languages; his translations include One Hundred Poems from the Japanese (1956) and The Orchid Boat: Women Poets of China (with Ling Chung, 1973). He is best known, however, for his own poetry. Modernist in his early life, simple and Zenlike in his later years, his verse is unified by autobiographical content, a mingling of the personal with the political, and a concern with the transience of life and the transcendent joys of nature and eros. His verse collections include In What Hour The Phoenix and the Tortoise In Defense of the Earth (1956), and New Poems (1974). He also wrote one volume of verse plays, Beyond the Mountains (1951), and several volumes of essays, including Bird in the Bush Alternative Society: Essays from the Other World (1970), and

Rexroth, Kenneth
American, 1905–1982
Kenneth Rexroth was primarily a poet and translator who occasionally wrote essays and book reviews. Although he believed that poets should write prose only for money, he took the writing of his commissioned assignments seriously. Altogether he wrote over 400 essays, book reviews, and newspaper columns. Most were on literary topics, but Rexroth also wrote authoritatively on modern art, jazz, religion, the Orient, and contemporary society. Regardless of the topic, the essays and reviews are all marked by his strong opinions on aesthetics, morality, and community.
In the introduction to his first collection, Bird in the Bush (1959), Rexroth wrote that his essays “are not criticism but journalism. It is my hope that they may find a modest place in what critics call a ‘tradition’—the tradition of [James Gibbons] Huneker, [H.L.]
Mencken, [Edmund] Wilson.” The writers he cites each wrote on social as well as artistic issues, for a mass audience in popular magazines, all the while expressing unpopular opinions. Like them, Rexroth expressed his often radical views in popular magazines such as the Nation, the Saturday Review, the New York Herald Tribune, and Art News.
