I think it was worth it. Duddy Kravitz is, after all, one of the more memorable characters I have come across. He reminds me a little of my father, although, whereas most of my father's schemes are no more than light gray on the black and white scale, Kravitz's schemes are more of a dark gray. In some ways, it was tiring to read the book with all the maneuvers young Duddy had going on. It was tough to keep up with them all.
Duddy is not exactly a likable character, except that I still found myself rooting for him at times even when I probably shouldn't have. There was one climatic moment where I felt happy that he had succeeded until I remembered, "Oh, wait, didn't he just screw over that other guy."
It's thanks to Stuart McLean of Vinyl Cafe that I read this book. On one episode, he talked of his favorite humorists, which included Richler, E.B. White, and Stephen Leacock. While I wouldn't exactly describe this book as humor, it was funny at times, and I'm anxious to read some of Richler's essays.

Richler, Mordecai
Canadian, 1931–
Mordecai Richler has been a working essayist since the 1950s, appearing in virtually every major Canadian, British, and American journal. Over that time, he has written most often about politics and social customs, travel and sports, Jews and Gentiles. He has also regularly reviewed books. Throughout, the touchstone has been his growing up on Montreal’s largely Jewish and working-class St. Urbain Street, which has also been central to his fiction. His success as an essayist has frequently supported that fiction, which remains the work on which he clearly wishes his reputation to rest. But Richler writes essays not merely to make a living: the genre affords him the obvious pleasure of exercising his “sense of the ridiculous.”
Although Richler has appeared in journals like the New York Review of Books and the New Statesman, he has often written for larger audiences (in Playboy and Inside Sports, for example). Throughout, his voice has been that of a sane man in a world only intermittently sane. His ideal reader, although never surprised by human nonsense, is still astonished by its variety. Critics have sometimes complained that Richler’s work lacks enough of a moral center to be satiric; indeed, he is more likely to puncture the ridiculous than offer remedies. In Richler’s work there is no overarching political or religious “Truth,” but simply the individual, doing his best by family and friends.

Richler, Mordecai
(b. Jan. 27, 1931, Montreal), prominent Canadian novelist whose incisive and penetrating works explore fundamental human dilemmas and values. Richler attended Sir George Williams University, Montreal (1950-51), then lived in Paris (1951-52), where he was influenced and stimulated by Existentialist authors. Returning to Canada (1952), Richler published the novel The Acrobats (1954). Set in Spain, it deals with the experiences of a young Canadian painter with a group of disillusioned expatriates and revolutionaries. Shortly afterward, Richler settled in England. He returned to Montreal in the 1970s. His subsequent novels, which manifest evidence of the poverty and anti-Semitism he experienced during his early years, include Son of a Smaller Hero (1955) and A Choice of Enemies (1957), both dealing with angry, confused modern heroes; The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1959), a bawdy and sometimes farcical account of a Jewish boy in Montreal and his transformation into a ruthless and amoral businessman, which was made into a film from his screenplay in 1974; and The Incomparable Atuk (1963), which contains amusing descriptions of the powerful men who control the communications industries.

Two clusters of experience from Richler's boyhood, one actual, the other vicarious, have had a marked effect on his artistic psyche: his growing up in the Jewish community of Montreal during the 1930s and 1940s, of which he has stated, "that was my time, my place, and I have elected myself to get it right"; and his consciousness of the conflicts in Europe, particularly of the defense of Madrid, which made a strong impression on him as a boy of nine and later came to be used in his fiction as a metaphor for honour and heroism. The importance to him of these concurrent sets of experience is pointed up by their appearance again and again in various forms in his fiction and non-fiction. He focuses on both with equal intensity in his novels The Acrobats (1954) and Son of a Smaller Hero (1955), both of which are considered "first novels", defined by George Woodcock as works that present "somewhat realistically the problems, aspirations, and agonies of a young writer".
A third-generation Canadian Jew, Richler was born on January 27, 1931, in Montreal, where his grandfather settled after venturing to Canada in 1904 to escape the Eastern European pogroms. Richler grew up in a self-contained world circumscribed by orthodoxy and by fear and ignorance of French and English Canadians. He attended Jewish parochial school, studied the Talmud and was expected to become a rabbi. At Baron Byng High School (the Fletcher's Field of his fiction), a Protestant school, he began to ease away from orthodoxy and to conceive of himself as both Jewish and Canadian, though this was not always an easy complementary conception of himself. "The minority man", he points out, quoting Norman Mailer, "grows up with a double-image of himself, his own and society's".
