Rinehart, Mary Roberts
ROBERTS (b. Aug. 12, 1876, Pittsburgh, Pa., U.S.d. Sept. 22, 1958, New York, N.Y.), American novelist and playwright best known for her mystery stories. After receiving nurse's training, she in 1896 married Stanley M. Rinehart, a physician. During the depression in 1903, she turned to writing. Her work proved highly popular almost from the beginning. The Man in Lower Ten, serialized in 1907, was followed by her first book, The Circular Staircase (1908). In addition to detective stories, she wrote a long series of comic tales about a dauntless spinster named Tish and her adventures with two friends; these appeared in The Saturday Evening Post through many years. Of her plays, mostly written in collaboration with Avery Hopwood, the most successful was The Bat (1920). She also wrote romances and several books of travel, some of which reflected her experiences as a war correspondent during World War I.
