Yannis Ritsos
View: Ritsos Poems Ritsos, Yannis, , Greek poet. One of modern Greece's most widely translated poets, Ritsos moved from an early concern with classical themes and style to a more deeply personal lyricism. His writing reflects family tragedies, a stay in a tuberculosis ward, and his political engagement against dictatorship that earned him periods of deportation and house arrest. He served time in prison camps during 1947-1952 and after the 1967 coup, thence living under house arrest or surveillance. He took moral power from his poems, and spoke of political enemies with compassion rather than bitterness. Some of his best known works include: Tractor (1934), and Pyramids (1935) These two works achieve a fragile balance between faith in the future, founded on the Communist ideal, and personal despair. Epitaph (1936). This was a lengthy poem which uses the mechanics of traditional poetry but expresses in a clear and simple language a message of fraternity and brotherhood

edit Early life
Born to a well-to-do landowning family in the Monemvasia , Ritsos suffered great losses as a child. The early deaths of his mother and his eldest brother from tuberculosis , the commitment of his father who suffered with mental disease and the economic ruin of losing his family marked Ritsos and affected his poetry. Ritsos, himself, was confined in a sanitarium for tuberculosis from 1927 - 1931.

In 1931, Ritsos joined the Communist Party of Greece (KKE). He maintained a working-class circle of friends and published Tractor in 1934, inspired of the futurism of

Ritsos, Yannis
(b . May 1, 1909, Monemvasia, Greeced. Nov. 11, 1990, Athens), popular Greek poet whose work was periodically banned for its left-wing content. Ritsos was born into a wealthy but unfortunate family. His father died insane; his mother and a brother died of tuberculosis when he was 12. Raised by relatives, Ritsos attended Athens Law School briefly (1925), was confined to a tuberculosis sanitarium (1927-31), and in the 1930s was an actor and dancer. He joined the Greek Communist Party in 1934, the year his first collection of poems, Trakter ("Tractors") appeared. Both it and Pyramides (1935; "Pyramids") mixed socialist philosophy with vivid images of his personal suffering. His next collection O Epitafios (1936; "Funeral Procession") was symbolically burned at the foot of the Acropolis, and for nearly a decade he could not publish freely. During the Nazi occupation of Greece (1944) and the start of the civil war Ritsos joined with the Communist guerrillas; after their defeat (1949) he was arrested and spent four years in prison camps. In the 1950s O Epitafios
