Book Description Customer Reviews: A middling effort This book is a strange one, with a strange history. Way back in 1955 (before my father was born), Robert Heinlein wrote a partial outline for a juvenile novel and, for whatever reason, opted not to write it. Fast forward a half-century, and Spider Robinson (whose Callahan's Bar stories are a must-read, by the way), was commissioned to write a novel from said outline. The results are mixed. Don't get me wrong-I enjoyed myself through and through. It's a good, fun, brisk read. But it does have a few annoyances. 1) It chooses to, for no reason I can see, use not Heinlein's Future History, but rather an offshoot of Heinlein's Future History. Why? Those who don't know Heinlein well won't get it, and those who do know the History will be annoyed by the off-shooting continuity. I know I was. 2) It pulls one of my big pet peeves in science fiction-namely, pop culture references. As though people will be quoting The Simpsons in the 23rd Century. Right. 3) The deus ex machina at the end. I won't spoil it, but it's not foreshadowed or possible to pre-conceive at all. It's a cheat, and it bugged me. Personally, I thought that it was building to an entirely different ending (and my ending rocked, by the way), and so I was annoyed when the rug w

Born in the Bronx New York City Robinson attended Catholic high school, spending his junior year in a seminary, followed by two years in a Catholic college, and five years at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in the 1960s, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English. While at Stony Brook, Spider earned a reputation as a great entertainer at campus coffeehouses and gatherings, strumming his guitar and singing in harmony with his female partner. In his 20s, he "spent several years in the woods, deliberately trying to live without technology." In 1971, just out of college, he got a night job guarding sewers in New York City. . He wrote his first published science fiction story, "The Guy with The Eyes", to get out of that job. In 1975 he married his wife Jeanne, a choreographer, dancer, and

    Spider-Man
Spider-Man swung into town this weekend and, judging from the buzz of anticipation in the theater beforehand, not a minute too soon. Some carpers might say that the film's producers have pushed the summer blockbuster envelope too far: school won't be out for nearly a month and we've already got a "must see several times" comic book hero adventure to deal with. Maybe it was the (finally!) vernal weather tricking people into thinking that Memorial Day was just around the corner. Or maybe it was the free comic book being given out at the premiere showing. In any case, this one sets the bar pretty high for those that trail it through the actual vacation months.
Stan Lee, the co-creator of the original Marvel Comics hero, serves as executive producer, insuring that it retains the look and feel of its model. Director Sam Raimi has also hewed a fine line, giving us enough special effects to provide the "oh, wow!" factor, while sufficiently humanizing the hero to engage us in what becomes of him. And screenwriter David Koeppa keeps us guessing what folks are going to say and do next, right up to and through the ending, which at once satisfies and tantalizes.
The set-up will be familiar to anyone who's been aware of pop culture. High school dweeb Peter Parker (Toby Maguire) is a literal fall guy, being tripped on the bus, shoved around, and generally intimidated by jocks and bullies. He's been sweet on the row-house girl next door, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) since he was six, but her head looks to be turned in distinctly different directions. An orphan, Peter has been reared by his Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson, in a rare return to the screen) and his aunt (Rosemary Harris), who dote on him and take pride in his scientific interests.

What they resent is not so much that he towers over them, and can see farther than they can imagine. Nor is it that he has been trying for nearly half a century to warn them of the tigers approaching through the distant grasses downwind. They do resent these things, but what they really, bitterly resent is his damnable contention that they are not blind, his insistent claim that they can open up their eyes any time they acquire the courage to do so. Unforgivable.

    Description
After the shattering death of his beloved wife, aging baby-boomer Russell Walker had wanted only to hide from the world in the woods of British Columbia. Instead, an old college acquaintance called Smelly, who was a telepath, had knocked on his door and demanded his help in stopping a serial killer who made Hannibal Lector look like a boy scout. They had managed to convince Nika, a hard-headed and skeptical police officer, and the trio had stopped the killer, though nearly at the cost of their own lives, and things could go back to normal . . . they thought. But then Russell was visited by his estranged son, Jesse, a PR exec from New York, still angry over his father’s role in his mother’s death. And, to their dismay, Nika and Russell learn that agreeing to help Zudie conceal the fact that he can read minds involves committing to help him hide from the CIA, who have been hunting him desperately ever since he escaped from the MK Ultra Project back in the ‘60s. Constable Nika must decide what being a peace officer means. Russell must decide on the fly whether or not Smelly is the kind of friend you'd die for. And Jesse, who lives in America, must decide just where his own nationaland personalloyalties lie.

Spider Robinson didn't start out with dreams of becoming a writer of world-renowned science fiction. Not even close. Spider Robinson's early dreams and ambitions were mostly around being a folksinger. Robinson laughs now that there "was an extremely limited window for that career." And the window was closing rapidly. Around the time he got good enough to start getting regular gigs, the window closed. "There was room for one James Taylor and the position was filled, thank you." Robinson's many and vocal fans are most likely pleased by this development. Not only did it mean that the hilarious and visionary writer would actually at some point begin to write, it also would lead to the birth of one of Robinson's best loved heroes, the recurring Jake Stonebender from Spider's Callahan series of books. Like Jake, Robinson is tall and lean to the point of stringbeany-ness. "If you saw me naked you'd see I look like a snake that swallowed a dog." This in spite of that fact that he gained a whopping 25 pounds after quitting smoking last year, a gain that has seen him pushing up over 145 pounds.
